recent advances in technology have enabled the acquisition of high-resolution topographic data by means of airborne laser swath mapping (ALSM), which can yield digital elevation models (dEMs) with horizontal resolutions of 1m. A dEM is a grayscale image wherein pixel value corresponds to elevation. Using ALSM imaging systems over forested terrain, we filter out the laser returns from the occluding foliage and estimate bare-surface dEMs. Extracting stream networks from dEMs is important for modeling many hydrological processes. We apply a sequence of morphological operations to an ALSM dEM to detect stream channels in forested terrain. We verify the accuracy of the results using a set of error measures over simulated terrain and also using GPS ground truth over real terrain. For linking disconnected stream segments, a measure of pixel connectivity is used.

Bioimage Informatics is a rapidly growing research field that is giving fundamental contributions to research in biology and biomedicine aiming at facilitating the extraction of quantitative information from images. Great advances in biological tissue labeling and microscopic imaging are radically changing how biologists visualize and study the molecular and cellular structures. These devices nowadays produce terabyte-sized multi-dimensional images: how to automatically and efficiently extract objective knowledge from such images has become a major challenge. In this manuscript we analyze the state-of-the-art of Bioimage Informatics, with a special focus on neuroscience. We show that there are increasing efforts to deliver methods and software tools providing functionalities for visualization, representation, management and analysis of 3d multichannel images. Nevertheless, most of them have been applied on datasets with size of MVoxel or few GVoxel, where the variations in contrast, illumination, as well as object shape and dimensions are limited. The huge dimensions of new 3d image stacks therefore ask for fully automated processing methods, whose parameters should be dynamically adapted to different regions in the volume. In this respect, this manuscript deepens in a recent contribution that digitally charts the Purkinje cells of whole mouse cerebellum, corresponding to an image dataset of 120 GVoxels.

In this paper, we propose a new MOSFET design: Multi Layered dielectric Four Gate MOSFET (G 4 -MLd MOSFET) and investigate its device performance through a two dimensional (2-d) analytical model by solving Poissonpsilas equation using parabolic potential profile approach. The 2-d analytical model gives physical insight into the electrical characteristics of this design in terms of surface potential profile, electric field distribution, threshold voltage, subthreshold slope, drain induced barrier lowering, drain current, drain conductance and transconductance variation between the lateral junction gates. The proposed design is superior to the conventional G 4 MOSFET in terms of improved analog and switching performances making it an attractive solution for the ongoing integration process in analog and digital design technology.

due to recent advances in the field of virtual reality, the demand for immersive sound design has increased dramatically. While pre-recorded samples are a popular tool in this context, it has limited flexibility and user interactivity. We propose a real-time method that can synthesize fully immersive sounds of droplets falling in water. The physics of air bubbles produced in the liquid are considered in detail, and the sound samples are synthesized in a GLSL shader to make full use of parallel computing. A vertex shader shows the resulting disturbance on the liquid surface, to further immerse the user with consistent visuals. Results show that a large amount of bubbles can easily be generated on a regular desktop computer.

recent advances in imaging technologies, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) and diffusion tensor imaging (dTI) have accelerated brain research in many aspects. In order to better understand the synergy of the many processes involved in normal brain function, integrated modeling and analysis of MRI, PET, and dTI across subjects is highly desirable. The current state-of-art computational tools fall short in offering an analytic approach for intersubject brain registration and analysis. In this paper we present an approach which is based on landmark constrained conformal parameterization of a brain surface from high-resolution structural MRI data to a canonical spherical domain. This model allows natural integration of information from co-registered PET as well as dTI data and lays a foundation for the quantitative analysis of the relationship among diverse datasets across subjects. Consequently, the approach can be extended to provide a software environment able to facilitate detection of abnormal functional brain patterns in patients with neurological disorder.

This work describes a design methodology for developing an interactive visualization environment using Augmented Reality (AR) based on Head Mounted displays (HMds) to provide a learning experience for cardiac and Nerve anatomy. After precise model geometry was obtained by computed tomography imaging techniques and optimized in a 3d modeling software package, photo-realistic texture mapping was achieved by using 3d painting software. Using this strategy makes modeling intricate, organic geometry easier. The Unity game engine was used to provide animation, rendering methods, and augmented reality functionality. The architecture and development of the system depicts complicated learning information, maximizes immersion, and facilitates natural gesture interaction inside a real-world learning environment. An accessible way to illustrate cross-section rendering in augmented reality was achieved by combining hand input with a surgical dissection metaphor. This technique has led to well-directed lessons being learned.

The development of radar polarimetry and radar interferometry is advancing rapidly, and these novel radar technologies are revamping "synthetic aperture radar imaging" decisively. In this exposition the successive advancements are sketched; beginning with the fundamental formulations and high-lighting the salient points of these diverse remote sensing techniques. Whereas with radar polarimetry the textural fine-structure, target-orientation and shape, symmetries and material constituents can be recovered with considerable improvements above that of standard 'amplitude-only polarization radar'; with radar interferometry the spatial (in depth) structure can be explored. In 'polarimetric-interferometric synthetic aperture radar (POL-IN-SAR) imaging' it is possible to recover such co-registered textural plus spatial properties simultaneously. This includes the extraction of 'digital elevation maps (dEM)'' from either 'fully polarimetric (scattering matrix)' or interferometric (dual antenna) SAR image data takes' with the additional benefit of obtaining co-registered threedimensional 'POL-IN-dEM' information. Extra-wide-band POL-IN-SAR imaging - when applied to 'repeat-pass image overlay interferometry' - provides differential background validation and measurement, stress assessment, and environmental stress-change monitoring capabilities with hitherto unattained accuracy, which are essential tools for improved global biomass estimation. More recently, by applying multiple parallel repeat-pass EWB-POL-d(RP)- IN-SAR imaging along stacked (altitudinal) or displaced (horizontal) flight-lines will result in 'tomographic (multi-interferometric) polarimetric SAR stereo- imaging', including foliage and ground penetrating capabilities. It is shown that the accelerated advancement of these modern 'EWB-POL-d(RP)-IN- SAR' imaging techniques is of direct relevance and of paramount priority to wide-area dynamic homeland security surveillance and local-to-global environmental groundtr

We present a simple yet effective general-purpose framework for modeling 3d shapes by leveraging recent advances in 2d image generation using CNNs. Using just a single depth image of the object, we can output a dense multi-view depth map representation of 3d objects. Our simple encoder-decoder framework, comprised of a novel identity encoder and class-conditional viewpoint generator, generates 3d consistent depth maps. Our experimental results demonstrate the two-fold advantage of our approach. First, we can directly borrow architectures that work well in the 2d image domain to 3d. Second, we can effectively generate high-resolution 3d shapes with low computational memory. Our quantitative evaluations show that our method is superior to existing depth map methods for reconstructing and synthesizing 3d objects and is competitive with other representations, such as point clouds, voxel grids, and implicit functions. Continuous improvement in optical sensing components, as well as recent advances in signal acquisition theory provide a great opportunity to reduce the cost and enhance the capabilities of depth sensing systems. In this paper we propose a new depth sensing architecture that exploits a fixed coded aperture to significantly reduce the number of sensors compared to conventional systems. We further develop a modeling and reconstruction framework, based on model-based compressed sensing, which characterizes a large variety of depth sensing systems. Our experiments demonstrate that it is possible to reduce the number of sensors by more than 85%, with negligible reduction on the sensing quality.

This course introduces the science behind image digitization, tone reproduction, and color reproduction in computer generated imagery (CGI), HdTV, and digital cinema (d-cinema). We detail how color is represented and processed as images are transferred between these domains. We detail the different forms of nonlinear coding ("gamma") used in CGI, HdTV, and d-cinema. We explain why one system's RGB does not necessarily match the RGB of another system. We explain color specification systems such as CIE XYZ, L∗a∗b∗, L∗u∗v∗, HLS, HSB, and HVC. We describe why the coding of color image data has a different set of constraints than color specification, and we detail color image coding systems such as RGB, R′G′B′, CMY, Y′CBCR, and dPX/Cineon. We explain color measurement instruments such as densitometers and colorimeters, and we explain monitor calibration. We explain how color management technology works, and how it is currently being used in motion picture film production (both animation and live action). Reproducing the tristimulus numbers of classical color science only reproduces colors accurately in an identical viewing environment. If the viewing situation changes, color is not completely described by numbers. In applying color science to image reproduction, we wish to reproduce images in environments where angular subtense, background, surround, and ambient illumination may differ from the conditions at image origination. recent advances in color appearance modelling allow us to quantify the alterations necessary to reproduce color appearance in different conditions. We will introduce the theory and standards of color appearance models. We will then describe the application of color science and color appearance models to commercial motion imaging in computer graphics, video, HdTV, and d-cinema.
