This Plenary Address will provide an overview of the most promising concepts, technologies, systems, applications, and the state of the art in the field of three-dimensional (3-d) TV, 3-d display, and 3-d imaging. It will describe research and development by the important players in the field. We present a number of techniques and systems for three-dimensional (3-d) image sensing and display. Integral imaging is a method to obtain a 3-d image by use of a set of two-dimensional (2-d) elemental images with different perspectives. In this lecture, improved results on three-dimensional TV and video systems using integral imaging will be presented. The optoelectronics image capture and display systems use moving micro-optics array lens technique for improved viewing resolution and viewing angle. Experimental results for image pickup and display will be presented. Also, computational integral imaging systems using digital reconstruction techniques will be discussed. Applications to 3-d TV, 3-d image visualization, and 3-d object recognition will be discussed.

Today digital medical imaging starts to be more introduced in the daily practice for clinical, educational, research uses. The work reported in this paper is done within the context of the Research Project UEFISCdI No. 31/2014, "AIMMS - Application for Using Image data Mining and 3d modeling in dental Screening". AIMMS provides an integrated platform to support dental treatment methods using the most recent digital image processing technology, image mapping technology and 3d modeling. dICOM files are used for detecting anatomical information and pathological dentistry problems. The platform aims to encourage the progress of computer aided dentistry detection, focusing on building and exploiting knowledge about models that include discriminating elements between normal and dental pathologies scans. This is done through semantic annotations which store information about the structural and anatomical elements, regions and points of interest, as well as information related to analyzed teeth. In this article we provide a general overview of the AIMMS integrated platform and the AIMMS research work and main obtained results.

Application of the electromagnetic analysis by Finite-difference Time-domain (FdTd) method coupled with the scalar diffraction (Sd) method for the electromagnetic (EM) modeling of optical microscope imaging is introduced. FdTd method is applied for the modeling of scattering from a 2d target - typically an IC structure with size of elements comparable to the wavelength of the considered wave. Here a full-wave propagation model must be considered, Afterwards, obtained results are coupled with a scalar diffraction method based on it Fresnel approximation to project a magnified image through the cylindrical lens onto the image plane. The lens structure may be even bigger than 1000 wavelengths and thus is out of range of application of the full-wave electromagnetic analysis. The considered hybrid method seems to be the best choice(sic) for an accurate simulation of the imaging results.

Increasine interest in CdTe/CZT for gamma-ray imaging has marked the last 10 years with progress in crystal growth, device technology, integrated electronics and signal processing. The purpose of this paper is to present recent advances in these four fields at CEA-LETI. A new method to grow very large dimension CZT up to 300 mm in diameter is presented. MS-contact process control allows design of very small electrodes (100 mu m pitch) and results on long-term stability are presented. The development of low-noise front-end integrated electronics and new interconnects technologies have made "pixel detectors" feasible. Significant effort has been focused on reaching high-energy resolution as well as high detection efficiency. The combination of signal processing such as bi-parametric (BP) approaches and electrode design presents an interest in charge loss compensation for a large range of mu tau products, tailing reduction due to geometric effect and depth of interaction information. New digital approaches may give drastic advantages to push the limit of spectrometric performance. In the field of gamma-ray application, single-channel device for per-operative probes and small 2-d imager for molecular imaging are the most promising ones. By using a tailored "mixed" electrode (small anode and capacitive grid Frich effect) and a BP correction, an energy resolution of 1% at 662 keV has been demonstrated with CZT based 8 x 8 x 15 mm 3 detector. New results of 3-d CZT detectors for mu PET imaging are presented with a measured coincidence time of 2.6 ns FWHM and an expected spatial resolution of 1 mm FWHM. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. modeling of 3d objects from image sequences is a challenging problem and has been a research topic for many years. Important theoretical and algorithmic results were achieved that allow to extract even complex 3d scene models from images. One recent effort has been to reduce the amount of calibration and to avoid restrictions on the camera motion. In this contribution an approach is described which achieves this goal by combining state-of-the-art algorithms for uncalibrated projective reconstruction, self-calibration and dense correspondence matching. © 1999 IEEE.

The study deepens the design of a joining system for bamboo spatial structure by proposing new and advanced solutions that guarantee maximum freedom of composition to the designer. The joint allows to determine and control parametrically the adaptability to any spatial grid configuration of culms with heterogeneous dimensions. despite the bamboo being one of the main natural building materials in the field of sustainable architecture, currently, it is not used enough due to the lack of adequate connection systems. Bamboo is a rapidly growing renewable resource, naturally available, which is quite strong and lends itself to structural applications. The paper proposes an innovative approach to architectural design by parametric modelling techniques developed in recent years in parallel with advances in the field of computational geometry. The 3d prototyping of different types of joints and the architectural-compositional design of a temporary structure, destined to be used as an exhibition pavilion, have made it possible to validate the technological solution defined.

3d imaging technologies have undergone massive revolution in recent years. despite this rapid development, documentation of 3d cultural assets in Malaysia is still very much reliant upon conventional techniques such as measured drawings and manual photogrammetry. There is very little progress towards exploring new methods or advanced technologies to convert 3d cultural assets into 3d visual representation and visualization models that are easily accessible for information sharing. In recent years, however, the advent of computer vision (CV) algorithms make it possible to reconstruct 3d geometry of objects by using image sequences from digital cameras, which are then processed by web services and freeware applications. This paper presents a completed stage of an exploratory study that investigates the potentials of using CV automated image-based open-source software and web services to reconstruct and replicate cultural assets. By selecting an intricate wooden boat, Petalaindera, this study attempts to evaluate the efficiency of CV systems and compare it with the application of 3d laser scanning, which is known for its accuracy, efficiency and high cost. The final aim of this study is to compare the visual accuracy of 3d models generated by CV system, and 3d models produced by 3d scanning and manual photogrammetry for an intricate subject such as the Petalaindera. The final objective is to explore cost-effective methods that could provide fundamental guidelines on the best practice approach for digital heritage in Malaysia.

Radiology plays important roles in orthopaedic surgery. Although various conventional radiological assessments including digital X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT) and the three-dimensional (3d) CT reconstruction images have been widely developed and utilized for preoperative assessment and planning, there are limitations. For example, despite the advances in 3d digital reconstruction images, the 3d structure, anatomy and damaged situation are still being inspected in a separate and flat manner(i.e. paper, film, etc.). Therefore the requirement of real 3d models for bone and joint has emerged clinically. In the present study, a CAd based 3d visualization system and a rapid prototyping (RP) technique were used to fabricate 3d physical models of highly difficult fractures and severe deformities in skeleton including severe pelvic/acetabular fractures, comminuted proximal humeral fractures, talar/ankle joint fractures, scoliolosis and progressive deformities in extremity. Applications and benefits of the biomedical visualization-based orthopaedic surgical strategies were elucidated.

In recent years, digital medical imaging technology has opened its door to the community. In this paper we provide a software solution for detecting the brain abnormalities for detection of Alzheimer's disease. The proposed algorithm is to produce a 3d representation of the brain from the MRI slices. This method is more accurate and reliable. MRI slices undergo different processes such as de-noising, segmentation, slice-o-matic (3d construction), and calculation of residual volume of brain parts. It uses the grey to white matter ratio for determining if the person is affected by Alzheimer's disease. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. digital Twins (dTs) for cities represent a new trend for city planning and management, enhancing three-dimensional modeling and simulation of cities. While progress has been made in this research field, the current scientific literature mainly focuses on the use of semantically segmented point clouds to develop 3d city models for dTs. However, this study discusses a new reflection that argues on directly integrating the results of semantic segmentation to create the skeleton of the dTs and uses enriched semantically segmented point clouds to perform targeted simulations without generating 3d models. The paper discusses to what extent enriched semantic 3d point clouds can replace semantic 3d city models in the dTs scope. Ultimately, this research aims to reduce the cost and complexity of 3d modeling to fit some dTs requirements and address its specific needs. New perspectives are set to tackle the challenges of using semantic 3d point clouds to implement dTs for cities.
