The development of medical devices that comply with the soft mechanics of biological systems at different length and complexity levels is highly desirable. With the emergence of conducting polymers exciting directions opened in bioelectronics research, bridging the gap between traditional electronics and biology. With the goal of fully integrated devices, organic bioelectronic technologies have been heavily explored the past decade resulting in novel materials/device configurations. Multiplexing capability, ability to adopt to complex performance requirements in biological fluids, sensitivity, stability, literal flexibility, and compatibility with large-area processes are only some of the merits of this technology for biomedical applications. This talk will summarize our recent progress on organic bioelectronic sensors for applications ranging from metabolite sensing to infection diagnostics combining materials development and processing with new biofunctionalization strategies aiming to improve the sensitivity and conformability of the sensors.

The current developments in smart sensor technologies provide the foundation for industry growth and boost any nation’s economy. A smart sensor can be used as a high-precision measuring device in a large range of potential use cases like a smart biosensor can be used for monitoring patient health, diagnose disease, provide personalised therapy etc. To keep ideal levels of precision, smart sensor calibration with specific digital or electronic standards is required. The fundamental principles of building a robust National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) in any nation are calibration, standardization, accreditation and testing. In this study, five smart sensor flexi-force sensor calibrated under the use-case of developing an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled rehabilitation glove for patients. The flexi-force sensors, effectively measures patient gripping strength at certain level of strength between 0 to 4.4lb. NIIRT performs the calibration of flexi-force sensors at lab with NABL accreditation adheres to stringent guidelines which employ cutting-edge machinery to guarantee accurate calibration outcomes report in India. According to the report, the calibration process demonstrated high precision with an accuracy of ±3 and an uncertainty of ±1. These results confirm the reliability and suitability of the flexi-force sensors for use in developing rehabilitation gloves, enhancing their potential for real-time healthcare applications.

Flexible hybrid electronics (FHEs) have garnered considerable attention for their diverse applications. Efforts are underway to fabricate miniaturized and cost-effective sensors. While various printing technologies exist, each has its advantages and limitations. High Precision Capillary Printing (HPCAP) addresses these challenges. It utilizes capillary forces and resonance for ink deposition, achieving high resolutions with exceptional precision. This paper presents HPCAP’s mechanisms and capabilities, emphasizing its high resolution, substrate versatility, and ink compatibility. Case studies demonstrate its ability to print micron and sub-micron structures and adapt to diverse substrate topographies, offering promise for flexible and hybrid electronics applications.

In this paper we investigate the feasibility of epoxy-based electrodes for electrochemical sensors. Epoxy is a durable polymer and can lead to chemically stable electrodes, but it has a low conductivity. By adding nanoparticles with high conductivity to it, its conductivity can be significantly enhanced. A novel electrode material has been realized based on an epoxy nanocomposite and has been investigated in a three-electrode electrochemical sensor. A comparison between three types of dispersions in terms of time optimization was carried out by running cyclic voltammetry in ferric ferrocyanide solution A significantly enhancement in the electrochemical activity is carried out for this redox couple between the three types of electrodes. The results show, that an extremely small quantity of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of 1 wt. % and silver nanoparticles (Ags) of 0.2 wt. % is necessary to reach an acceptable conductivity about 0.1 S/m by a sonication time of 40 min. The obtained novel epoxy sensor with 40 min dispersion is applicable for electrochemical applications;since we reached an electroactive surface area about 0.1 mm(2) and a peak potential separation (Delta Ep) of 0.459 V, which are better than those obtained in 30 min and 50 min dispersion under the same conditions.

The development of wireless connections is being pushed by an unprecedented rise of artificial intelligence (AI) software, with 6G becoming a game-changing technology. However advanced artificial intelligence (AI) needs a lot of connectivity and processing power, which causes delays, energy waste, network traffic, and privacy breaches. By combining sensing, interaction, computing, and intellect, Edge AI—which incorporates model learning and reasoning capacities at the connection's edge—offers an innovative approach for 6G network deployments. With an emphasis on distributed machine learning algorithms and incorporated wireless networking protocols, this article offers a vision for sustainable and reliable edge artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This project investigates underwater communication utilizing Li-Fi technology. Two Arduino Nano microcontrollers orchestrate communication, employing Li-Fi modules for data transfer. Comprehensive environmental monitoring is achieved by integrating heart rate, temperature, and humidity sensors on both sides. Real-time notifications are provided through buzzer alerts and LED indicators, while four switches enable users to transmit specific messages. The report delves into the system design, software development, and testing procedures, presenting the achieved data transfer rate and analyzing factors influencing communication performance. Additionally, it showcases the successful integration of sensor data, demonstrating the potential of Li-Fi for underwater communication due to its high bandwidth and immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, the project acknowledges limitations such as water absorption and reduced range. Finally, the report concludes by suggesting future research directions to further develop and optimize this promising technology for diverse underwater applications.

Potentiometric sensor devices are having a wide range of applications in environmental and biomedical fields. This short review aims to provide an updates on recent innovations in various nanomaterials as sensing components used in potentiometric sensor devices. The review also covers the various methods and conditions used to develop these sensor nanomaterials with appropriately decorated by functional groups. Reduced graphene oxide along with traditional platinum electrodes is used to monitor algae growth in an aquatic ecosystem. Here, the addition of reduced-graphene increases the selectivity and precision of the potentiometric sensor. The review also describe the fabrication and the mechanism of sensing of carbon composite based glucose sensors, sweat sensors and pH sensors which are used for monitoring a human body. Sweat sensors are the ion-sensors which use carbon nanoparticles for high selectivity. Porous graphene oxide is also one of the highly used carbon nanomaterials which show high selectivity towards different types of chemicals under certain conditions. PANI/Graphene/CNT nanocomposite based potentiometric sensor is used to detect hazardous 4-aminophenol in the surrounding area. Using nanocomposite increases the selectivity and gives a high current response in the I-V graph. The granular nature of InVO4 is used in the fabrication of ammonia sensors. Formaldehyde is one of the commonly found adulterations in the food. A biosensor has been fabricated using CNTs-Fe3O4 nanocomposite to detect the formaldehyde in the foods. Finally the review summarizes the merits and limitations of various potentiometric sensors developed for different biomedical applications. © The Electrochemical Society

Environment monitoring using Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) is considered as a challenging and demanding field, which enables to collect and process large amount of data related to the deployment environment. Thus, the performance of the monitoring system is dependent strongly of the hard-ware capability of the deployed nodes, as well as of the communication protocols and data transmission strategies. In this work, a new wireless sensor node is introduced. The node uses MSP430FR5969 microcontroller, which offers a high processing capability with reduced energy consumption and has a maximum operating frequency of 16 MHz. The node is compact in size with a dimension of dimensions 53 x 33 mm(2). The node consumes an average of 27.35 mA during transmission. Current consumption during the sleep and idle modes are 0.33 mA and 31 mA, respectively. An outdoor application is presented, where the node is equipped with a solar panel for energy harvesting. The battery voltage variation and the Received Signal Strength (RSSI) were continuously measured and evaluated.
