With the advances of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, various kinds of sensor networks have been developed, and each network has different capabilities. In this paper, we propose a middleware over heterogeneous sensor networks and its query processor which deals with diverse kinds of queries. Since our query processor hides the heterogeneity of underlying sensor networks, applications are able to request identical queries without worrying about the capabilities of target sensor networks. Moreover, we suggest the concept of logical sensor networks and a method to handle them for facilitating the application development. Our experimental results indicate the feasibility and usefulness of our query optimization.

This paper presents a SystemC-based system-level modeling framework for wireless sensor networks. Benefit from the advantages of SystemC in the aspect of hardware and software co-simulation, this modeling framework allows the performance evaluation of sensor networks at system-level with elaborate sensor node models. It is used to study an industrial application, in which an IEEE 802.15.4 sensor network based on MICAz motes is deployed to achieve the active control of the vibrations in an automotive system. The simulation results (packet delivery rate, packet delivery latency and power consumption) provide a fundamental understanding of this application for the system designers.

This paper presents a novel tiered sensor networking architecture that employs advanced Wireless sensor Network (WSN) technologies for military operations. This architecture results in an agile surveillance system with a focus on improved operational flexibility and usability. Performance measurements using an in-house simulator are provided using two different scenarios to demonstrate the system's great agility and expandability, operating from possibly a small-scaled single cluster to a network of many chained hop-to-hop connections offering a large coverage area.

The proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) presents significant challenges to public safety and critical infrastructure protection. This paper introduces SwarmCatcher, an innovative AI-powered anti-drone and surveillance system designed to detect and classify UAV threats in real-time. Swarm-Catcher integrates multi-sensortechnologies, including optical, thermal, RF, and acoustic systems, with advanced AI algorithms to provide thorough situational awareness. Utilizing the low-latency, high-throughput capabilities of cloud-native architecture and 5G networks, the system supports scalable deployment across diverse environments, offering rapid threat mitigation. Real trials were conducted, utilizing 5G infrastructures in the FIDAL and CERTH testbeds, evaluating and demonstrating SwarmCatcher's potential to address the requirements of public safety agencies and pave the way for integration with 6G networks. The paper investigates SwarmCatcher's architecture, key performance metrics, and its role in advancing next-generation vertical-specific applications for public safety.

We proposed a human-robot bidirectional trust-triggered cyber-physical-human (CPH) system framework for human-robot collaborative assembly in flexible manufacturing. For this purpose, we developed a one human-one robot hybrid cell where a human and a robot collaborated with each other to perform the assembly operation of different manufacturing components in a flexible manufacturing setup. We configured the human-robot collaborative system in three interconnected components of a CPH system: (i) cyber system (software system), (ii) physical system (the robot, sensors, hardware accessories, and the work environment), and (iii) human system (the human co-worker and the supervisor). We divided the functions of the CPH system into three modules: (i) computing, (ii) communication, and (iii) control. We used a model to compute the human and robot's bidirectional trust in each other in real-time. We implemented the proposed trust-triggered CPH framework in the human-robot collaborative assembly setup and conducted an experiment to modulate the communication methods and strategies among the cyber, physical and human components of the CPH system. The results showed that variations in communication methods significantly impacted the performance and interactions of the CPH system in terms of human-robot interaction (HRI), and task performance (efficiency and quality). The results can transform the design, development, analysis and control of human-robot collaborative systems configuring them in the form of a CPH system and thus enhance the scope, ease and effectiveness of human-robot collaborative systems for various applications such as manufacturing, construction, etc.

Wireless sensor networks have today emerged as a feasible infrastructure for healthcare applications. This paper addresses the non-trivial performance problems in contention-based wireless networks. We present a method for admission control in contention-based networks, implemented as a component of a performance management system. The test results show that admission control can improve the predictability and level of performance in wireless sensor networks. The system can be used as a tool for dimensioning and configuration as well as for real-time admission control. The often unpredictable dynamics in contention-based access networks means that continuous performance control is needed to maintain a desired quality of service.

Wireless sensor Networks are applied in new applications all the time. However, in many cases their performance in a particular application is not be evaluated until the deployment phase. This is often too late and causes extra work and iterations in the design of the network hardware or communication parameters. This can be reduced with careful study before the actual deployment using modeling and simulation tools for testing and optimizing the sensor network beforehand. In this paper we introduce three simulation tools for radio frequency (RF) propagation and estimate their suitability for modeling and simulation of sensor networks. According to the results, we see them as very efficient tools, but also suggest improvements for even more versatile results.

This study investigates the complex dynamics of waveguides by analyzing periodic structures incorporating closed resonators. We have examined a specific configuration composed of N single resonators, with and without geometrical defects in the main waveguide. The approach adopted is based on the transfer matrix method, enabling detailed analysis of the defect impact and complete characterization of low-frequency resonance phenomena. Under optimal conditions, the structural periodicity of the system leads to the creation of an acoustic band gap where the wave cannot propagate in the structure. Moreover, the presence of a defect has a significant effect on the appearance of localized modes in the acoustic band gap. Increasing the defect guide leads to the generation of multiple resonant modes with high acoustic transmittance. The position of these modes was well controlled by varying the length of the defect. These results are very useful in the field of acoustics, and pave the way for innovative applications such as acoustic filters and high-resolution sensors. This study thus offers an innovative framework for exploiting the effects of defects in waveguide systems, contributing to the evolution of modern acoustic technologies.

Offering a high energy density fuel cells provide a promising approach as power sources for autarkic portable applications like sensor nodes. However, as they generally are designed for constant loads the transient characteristics are of great importance when exposed to the load pulses demanded by these applications. Therefore the transient characteristics of a self-breathing passive fuel cell are studied in this paper. The different transient mechanisms in a fuel cell are discussed and the characteristics of a planar cell are studied experimentally. As a consequence of the preliminary results a separation of the different mechanisms through a specific experimental setup is necessary. Furthermore first design rules for a cell intended for pulse applications are derived.
