In the present study, we investigate the variability of the RF signal, measured as Received Signal Strength (RSS), in outdoor unobstructed environment aiming at modeling of the RSS uncertainty for the needs of the outdoor RSS-based localization and tracking applications. The modeling approach is based on determining empirically the relation between the RSS mean value and the RSS data deviation. Two modeling tasks are performed, namely RSS-static and RSS-mobile, representing the situation when the localized sensor node is immobile and when it is mobile, i.e., attached to a person. The performed simulation of RSS variance shows good correspondence to the measured variance, which validates the proposed approach.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSN) consist of a collection of wireless nodes that dynamically create a network themselves. However while doing so, not always energy optimization is considered. But energy consumption should be made as much low as possible since power is a constraint for these nodes. This paper proposes a clustering algorithm in Wireless sensor Network that uses few GPS-enabled nodes or beacons that help in localization of the nodes and thereby orienting themselves within clusters such that energy consumption becomes optimum during their activities of sensing and communication. The paper focuses on optimizing energy consumption during cluster formation in sensor networks.

The NNN-UTS project (Nordomradenes Nye Nervesystem - Undervanns Tradlost sensornettverk) has aimed to develop wireless network technology for underwater sensor networks, employing acoustic communication to realize wireless functionality in water. Research and development has been carried out in 2006-2009. A final sea test/demonstration of the system was carried out at Breiangen in the Oslo fjord, on December 3-4 2009. The result is a fully operative network system available for water depths down to 4000m.

Due to the development and proliferation of ubiquitous technologies and services, various sensor network applications are being appeared on the stage. The needs for algorithms requiring complex signal processing with a high-performance processor such as digital signal processor are also increased. However, it is difficult to use such processor for the low-power sensor network operating with a battery because of power consumption. This paper proposes and implements hardware and software architecture of the hybrid-type sensor module composed of a low-power sensor module and a high-performance sensor module for the complicated signal processing in the wireless sensor node. Although this approach needs some additional hardware, it results in some improvements in operation time supporting complex algorithms for target detection in the sensor networks.

In this paper, a novel localization approach based on the use of a mobile beacon is proposed for wireless sensor networks. The localization system consists of a mobile beacon and beacon receiving modules on each sensor node for measuring distance. The localization is based on the application of multidimensional scaling technique and a local map registration approach. The approach is designed to operate without requiring path planning for the mobile beacon. It estimates the relative coordinates of the sensor nodes, and does not require the location information of the mobile beacon, making them attractive for applications where access to GPS signals is not available. Finally, computer simulations are used to evaluate the localization performance of the proposed approaches under different scenarios.

Reliable communication is crucial for successful deployment of a wireless sensor network. By taking into account communication and other wireless sensor networks constraints, networks can be analyzed efficiently. The diagnosis of the network's operation can be done using the information gathered by the sensor nodes in the network. This paper discusses wireless sensor network diagnostics describes so-called neighbourtables used to collect diagnostic data of the wireless CiNet network and their construction. The information stored in neighbourtables can be used to monitor network behavior and to improve networks' packet routing and fault recognizing for the nodes, in both, nodes' and centralized applications' point of view.

Ballistic midcourse maneuverable targets bring huge challenge to early-warning detecting tasks. The incoming threats targets could be lost in detection range of sensors and early-warning detecting tasks may be failure, which retard the response of a ballistic missile defense system and the criticality of missiles would be increased. How can the Space-based early warning system detect and track the ballistic midcourse maneuverable targets in real-time is a new issue. In this paper, a early-warning detecting tasks re-scheduling and sensor resources allocation strategy based on multi-levels is designed, sensor resources allocation rapidly come true and satisfied the dynamics and real-time tracking requirements of detecting tasks, as well as the fewer adjusting amplitude to originally resources scheme. Finally, taking the space-based early-warning detecting task of maneuverable ballistic missile for example, by which the feasibility and efficiency of the strategy are explained and proved.

Due to the proliferation of technologies and services related with wireless sensor network, various sensor network applications are being appeared on the stage and a lot of sensor network testing technologies are being studied. However, most of testing systems or testbeds have objective for test and evaluation of sensor network protocols. For testing sensors and evaluating signal processing algorithms, it is necessary to develop a testbed for those purposes and especially, for monitoring the high speed sensing data. This paper proposes and implements a wireless sensor network testbed for controlling sensors, getting and managing the real-time sensing data on the remote sites.

Wireless sensor Network deployment currently represents an affordable solution to some challenging application areas. This involves a careful system design with particular regard to the communications and control protocols. In the following, the benefits of adopting directive antennas, both in terms of energy saving and targets tracking are presented by integrating this feature into a novel MAC protocol (MD-STAR). Simulation results are also deeply provided, underlining higher performance of MD-STAR with respect to existing solutions, for different directive main lobe width and node density values.

Wireless sensor networks represent a fascinating domain, with a wide area of applications in various environments. For this reason, in the world of wireless networks professionals, there is a major interest concerning the security issues in network communication and data flow between a sensor network and other types of intelligent devices. This paper proposes a new intrusion detection system approach for assuring the security of a wireless sensor network against malicious attacks. Our method relies on the huge potential provided by the mixture between software modules developed in low-level or high-level software languages with modules developed in powerful numerical-oriented software (Matlab/Simulink) to increase the accuracy of data processing. The main result of this paper is the implementation know-how for an intelligent mixed system that use both hardware and software resources for proofing a wireless sensor network.
