The World Health Organization has indicated that exposure to air pollution will be one of the most significant challenges related to health in the following years, and air quality monitoring actions have been promoted due to the Paris Agreement because of their impact on mortality risk. Thus, generating methodologies and datasets that support policy makers in the decision process is essential in identifying and proposing mitigation scenarios is essential. In this context, the IoT paradigm allows for to collect of real-time, being the strength of this approach is the use of wearable devices in citizen science methodologies to collect personal exposure data and engage citizens about the pollution in neighbourhoods and cities. However, these hyperlocal IoT sensors present several challenges in terms of data quality. For this reason, this paper aims to evaluate the Atmotube Pro wearable device to assess its performance for citizen science approaches, by conducting field tests against the reference device GRIMM 11-D. Our results show that Atmotube Pro presents an acceptable accuracy - with R2 values ranging from 0.47 to 0.93, depending on particle size and sampling time - highlighting that the system is suitable for citizen science applications and community engagement.

This study explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and sensor fusion in wearable technology for early cardiac emergency detection and improved non-invasive cardiac diagnostics. Developed as part of a doctoral thesis within the Maia project in collaboration with Fraunhofer IZM and Charité Berlin, the system combines bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) with complementary sensor technologies, enabling synchronous monitoring of over 110 cardiac parameters at high data rates. Clinically relevant parameters were selected with input from Charité clinicians, ensuring precision. The system employs biocompatible silicone-based sensors and optimized semi-dry textile electrodes embedded in a smart textile vest, allowing continuous, non-invasive cardiac monitoring. By integrating BIS with electrocardiography (ECG), seismocardiography (SCG), phonocardiography (PCG), and photoplethysmography (PPG), this comprehensive system supports in-depth cardiac health assessment. Advanced deep learning and statistical machine learning algorithms enhance diagnostic accuracy, with models trained on clinical and patient-specific data, showing high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in detecting cardiovascular conditions. Validation with data from the PhysioNet database underpins this foundational design and development study. © 2024 Fraunhofer IZM.

The data fusion from sensors within the automotive vehicle is vital for improved accuracy and safety. The centralized and information matrix fusion (IMF) algorithms are famous for providing an optimal fusion estimate. However, the IMF is not viable in automotive sensor fusion applications due to the limited bandwidth and low hardware resources. Hence, distributed fusion technology is widely adopted in the automotive sensor applications to achieve high-speed and low-area realizations. This paper proposes three digital signal processing (DSP) architectures for covariance intersection (CI) fusion algorithm: Pipelined-traditional CI, adder-ladder CI, and pipelined adder-ladder CI. The proposed DSP architectures are evaluated with hardware resource consumption (multipliers, adders, and delays), maximum achievable frequency, and latency of the architecture. In addition, proposed CI algorithms for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) architectures are compared with IMF DSP architectures. The hardware resources and optimal pipeline stages required for CI with respect to N number of sensors are provided. The traditional pipeline algorithm requires N number of stages where as the proposed pipelined version of adder-ladder CI requires a N-1 pipeline stage with additional 7N-1 and 7N-3 delay elements for even and odd number of sensors to achieve the overall system operating frequency to an operation of multiplier. The proposed DSP architectures are suitable for automotive sensor fusion due to their high operating frequency and low hardware resources. © 2023 IEEE.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is another useful perspective that brings questions from different disciplines together over the Internet. As more wearable technologies become available on the market, teleworking in Wearable Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) is becoming more widespread for Internet of Things-related medical applications. This article proposes a solar-powered wearable touch sensor based on a complete social network (SPWT) and Wi-Fi transmission that connects to a WBAN. Different focal points of the sensor network can be assigned to different points in the frame to determine a person's core temperature and heart rate and understand falls. Software for mobile phones and smartphones that displays sensor data and alerts of falls has also been developed. This software includes a web interface. To increase the service life of the central part of the wearable sensor, the pressure in the middle part mainly uses a full-strength flexible solar-oriented sensor with the result based on superior technology like Maximum power point tracking (MPPT). Preliminary results show that the average element of the wearable sensor performs well, although limited by a fully controlled daylight-based power source. The button-less 24-hour movement is incubated with an initial effect. The proposed local energy storage-based photovoltaic device suggests that WBAN-based long-term continuous medical surveillance is possible because the situation is away from home for a short time per day. © 2023 IEEE.

The development and use of new technologies such as machine learning, the Internet of Things, and machine-to-machine (M2M) networks are driving the use of large wireless sensor network (WSN) deployment. However, the main constraint in the WSN is the finite energy supply of node batteries. So, ensuring a network remains operational for the longest possible period, it relies on the effective utilization of sensor node energy in data sensing, processing, and communication tasks. To achieve this initiative, various energy management techniques for WSNs are discussed which include sleep-wake scheduling, MIMO techniques, multihop technique, energy harvesting, clustering and routing, distributed source coding, and machine learning-based WSN. The simulation results of some techniques depict that it reduces energy consumption and therefore, it helps to enhance the lifetime of WSN in the IoTs application. Maintaining the quality of service and increasing the lifetime of WSNs in various applications in a dynamic network condition is a challenging task. ML can make the computing process more reliable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective in dynamic conditions. © 2023 IEEE.

Binary Sparse Matrix storage is one of the critical problems in embedded system applications. Storing these matrices in the memory efficiently is important. Magnitude of increase in matrix size also has significant impact on the memory requirement. Sometimes, it might not be possible to accommodate the data due to memory constraints. In this work, we have analyzed some of state-of-the-art methods deployed for storing these matrices in the system on-chip memory and we have demonstrated the shortcomings of each. Thus, we propose a modified version of run length encoding which scales aptly with matrix size and sparsity density of the binary sparse matrix. Through simulations we have shown that the proposed method performs better than many state-of-the-art algorithms. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper considers the spatial monitoring of a slowly varying, unknown distributed quantity, such as temperature over a wide area, using wireless sensors in the presence of time and frequency domain uncertainties, and additive white noise. It is assumed that a large number of wireless sensors collect their slowly-varying local data to share with a data fusion center (DFC) for spatial monitoring. The DFC employs a computationally efficient algorithm to recover the sensors' data in the presence of clock and carrier uncertainties, fast fading and noise. The blocks of a computationally efficient receiver are explored and instances of recovered data are presented at the DFC. The significance of the proposed approach are its low computational complexity, simplicity, and tractability for real-life applications. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel approach to address the challenges associated with the long-term use of conductive textiles as sensors, a critical area of research for the sustainable use of smart textiles. The key advancement over the existing state-of-the-art is the development of simple techniques for compensating for the effects of aging and degradation effects in mobile scenarios on resource-limited embedded systems. Through accelerated aging tests and cyclic stress tests, we demonstrate how integrated measurement circuits can be used to detect and compensate for aging effects. We also provide a software-based solution to complement mechanical protective measures. We were able to show that after the initial calibration and model determination, no further communication with a server structure is required for the adaptation of sensor models or their drift compensation. © 2023 IEEE.

Global state determination of distributed systems gives information that is useful in applications of checkpointing, distributed garbage collection, deadlock detection, distributed algorithm termination detection, event boundary detection, distributed debugging, etc. Determination of the global state in a wireless sensor network needs a different approach than of traditional distributed networks due to unique properties of WSN like a constraint on resources, energy constraints, remote hazardous environments where sensors are deployed, network topology that is dynamic in nature, etc. In this paper, we propose a distributed snapshot algorithm that is scalable, robust, and provides efficient communication among WSN nodes which is based on tree architecture. We designed an algorithm in such a way that it can easily be scaled to any number of nodes without affecting the performance of the underlying system and it can effectively handle packet loss so that the communication cost of the whole system is maintained as minimal. We performed simulations in OMNET++ and did the analysis of results based on the number of messages exchanged, response time, and performance in packet loss situations. © 2023 IEEE.
