Reliability and accuracy are key in state of the art Driving Assistance Systems and Autonomous Driving applications. These applications make use of sensor fusion for trustable obstacle detection and classification in any meteorological and illumination condition. Laser scanner and camera are widely used as sensors to fuse because of its complementary capabilities. This paper presents some novel techniques for automatic and unattended data alignment between sensors, and Artificial Intelligence techniques are used to use laser point clouds not only for obstacle detection but also for classification.. Information fusion with classification information from both laser scanner and camera improves overall system reliability.

Mobile applications to support physical activity have grown rapidly in the past years. Many users are attracted by the promised support for a healthier lifestyle. Still, the long-term effect of these applications can be doubt. A lack of theoretical foundation from behavior change theory is seen as a root cause for the lack of sustainable effects of these applications. Little is known about design concepts to include theoretical frameworks into application design while using the technological power of mobile technology. Addressing this gap, a concept is developed to include the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change and the Fogg Behavior Model into a mobile application for physical activity promotion. Based on a mobile sensor framework, context information is automatically collected to detect potentials for behavior change. The user is guided through a tailored path of behavior change with context aware persuasive services. The implications of the proposed concept for practice and research are discussed.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) generate huge volume of the heterogeneous data that can be made open source and linked for the different Enterprise IT applications. In order to use the services and data generated by the sensors, it should be in the standardized format. This homogeneity of defining the data and services is provided by the new emerging technology known as Internet of things. It has the power of Resource Description Framework, which links URIs and thus provides easy access from different sources to users through Internet. In this paper, we have studied different technologies that are using for integration of Service Oriented WSN and IoT for E-Commerce. Paper also discussed the current issues and challenges of the integration. By studying E-Commerce scenario, we also propose mathematical formulation of the problem for healthy transportation between seller and receiver.

This paper presents the experimental and investigational studies involving the use of compact ultra-wideband sensor nodes for tracking the human body motion. A standalone ultra-wideband positioning system developed by making use of commercially available impulse-radio UWB chips has been utilized for the localisation measurements. The operating principles of the technique used for position estimation and the results of various three dimensional localisation measurements undertaken using the system are provided. Details of the transmitter and receiver antennas and the UWB chip, the core components of this system have been discussed. Average localisation accuracy in the range of 1 to 5 cm has been achieved. The system makes use of time difference of arrival approach to estimate the 3D position of the target on-body node. Copyright © 2015 ICST.

Factory and process automation systems are increasingly employing information and communications technologies to facilitate data sharing and analysis in integrated control operations. Wireless connections provide flexible access to a variety of field instruments and reduce network installation and maintenance costs. This serves as an incentive for the adoption of industrial wireless networks based on standards such as the WirelessHART and ISA100.11a in factory control systems. However, process control systems vary greatly and have diverse wireless networking requirements in different applications. These requirements include deterministic transmissions in the shared wireless bandwidth, low-cost operation, long-term durability, and high reliability in the harsh radio propagation environment. It is an open question whether a generic wireless technology would meet the requirements of industrial process control. In this paper, we propose a novel simulation framework for performance evaluation of wireless networks in factory and process automation systems. We select a typical process control plant model, specifically the Tennessee Eastman Challenge (TE) Model, and define the interfaces between the process simulator and the wireless network simulator. We develop a model of the protocol stack of the WirelessHART specification in the OMNET++ simulation engine as a typical industrial wireless network. We present simulation results that validate the prospect of using WirelessHART in the TE plant, and we evaluate the impact of various wireless network configurations on the plant operation. Given its modular design, the proposed simulation framework can be easily used to evaluate the performance of other industrial wireless networks in conjunction with a variety of process control systems.

Due to the fast evolution of wireless access networks and high-performance mobile devices together with the spreading of wearable medical sensors, electronic healthcare (eHealth) services have recently started to receive more and more attention, especially in the mobile Health (mHealth) domain. The vast majority of mHealth services require strict medical level Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) provision. Emergency use-cases, remote patient monitoring, tele-consultation and guided surgical intervention require real-time communication and appropriate connection quality. The increasing significance of different overlapping wireless accesses makes possible to provide the required network resources for ubiquitous and pervasive mHealth applications. Aiming to support such use-cases in a heterogeneous network environment, we propose a network-assisted intelligent access point selection scheme for ubiquitous applications of Future Internet architectures focusing on real-time mobile telemedicine services. Our solution is able to discover nearby base stations that cover the current location of the mobile device efficiently and to trigger heterogeneous handovers based on the state and quality of the current access network. The solution is empirically evaluated in Wi-Fi networks used by real-life Android mobile devices and we observed that the scheme can improve the quality of mHealth applications and enhance traffic load balancing capabilities of wireless architectures. The Bragg microwave structures on the coaxial waveguide, constructed on the basis of the transfer optical technologies similar to the Bragg fiber grating, are considered. It is offered to use versions of such coaxial Bragg microwave structures in sensor application, in particular, creation of strain gauges, instruments for measuring dielectric constant of liquids and liquid products' level is considered. Methods for description of periodic inhomogeneous microwave structures characteristics and ways to modify the form of the frequency dependence of scattering parameters are viewed.

Writing recognition has various applications in daily life, e.g. smart homes, HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), and game world. Some existing technologies, including sensor-based, hardware-based and camera-based, suffer from various drawbacks, which prevent them to be implemented in a low cost and universal way. Recent progresses in the area of device-free sensing with WiFi signal enlighten the opportunity to address these limitations. However, state-of-the-art works show many obstacles and challenges before realization. To this end, we present Wi-Wri, a WiFi signals based device-free written letters recognition system. Specifically, Wi-Wri consists of two commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) WiFi devices, namely, a TP-LINK TL-WR842N router as the transmitter and an Intel NUC as the receiver. It leverages the Waveform of Channel State Information (CSI) values obtaining from COTS WiFi devices as the indicator of motion of hands and fingers. As our major contributions, we propose a written detection algorithm for extracting the written activity from CSI signal, a small scale motion recognition framework for rough letter input and a dictionary-based rectification to improve the input accuracy. The experimental results based on our implementation show that Wi-Wri can achieve more than 98.1% detection accuracy for detecting the motion of written letters and more than 82.7% recognition accuracy for recognizing written letters.

A description of a system, developed for the condition monitoring of wind turbines, which combines innovative, real time, and on-line oil sensor technologies is described. The system integrates the measurement of the three main parameters that assess the status of the lubricating oil in the lubrication system using different technologies: the degree of oil degradation using visible absorbance spectroscopy;the water content using near infrared spectroscopy;and the presence of wear debris using image processing technology. The measuring principles, sensor integration and validation test results obtained in artificially degraded oil samples are presented. © 2015 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
