This study simulates and examinesthe MEMS design process for a hypothetical sensor with an electromechanical interface. Conceptualizing the sensor entails establishing its purpose, operational environment, and capacitive sensing mechanism for sensitivity and precision. Geometric and physical models are developed using advanced COMSOL Multiphysics software to create a moveable proof mass supported by micro-fabricated beams. Static and dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) simulations can be used to evaluate the sensor’s mechanical reaction to input signals and electrode electrostatic forces. This guarantees that mechanical signals are properly transformed into electrical signals. These data are evaluated to determine the best performance criteria such as sensitivity, linearity, and thermal stability, resulting in iterative design improvements. Robustness analysis, including tolerance and FMEA, ensures dependability. Additionally, typical MEMS manufacturing technologies are being examined for fabrication. This simulation-driven strategy prioritises electro-mechanical interface issues throughout the design process, resulting in high-performance, and dependable MEMS sensors for a wide range of applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Tiny wearable devices are nowadays one of the most popular and used devices in everyday life. At the same time, machine learning techniques have reached a level of maturity such that they can be used in the most varied fields. The union of these two technologies represents a valuable opportunity for the development of pervasive computing applications. On the other hand, pushing the machine learning inference on a wearable device can lead to nontrivial issues. In fact, devices with small size and low-energy availability, like those dedicated to wearable platforms, pose strict computational, memory, and power requirements which result in challenging issues to be addressed by designers. The main purpose of this study is to empirically explore the trade-off between energy consumption and classification accuracy of a machine learning-based hand-washing recognition task deployed on a real wearable device. Through extensive experimental results, obtained on a public human activity recognition dataset, we demonstrated that given an identical level of classification performance, a classic SVM classifier can save about 40% of energy with respect to a more complex LSTM network. Moreover, reducing the LSTM complexity, by lowering the number of its internal unit, can make the LSTM network energy cost-effective (with a savings of about 30%) at the cost of a reduction in accuracy of only 2%.

In this paper, we address the challenge of navigating through unknown indoor environments using autonomous aerial robots within confined spaces. The core of our system involves the integration of key sensor technologies, including depth sensing from the ZED 2i camera, IMU data, and LiDAR measurements, facilitated by the Robot Operating System (ROS) and RTAB-Map. Through custom designed experiments, we demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of this approach. Our results showcase a promising navigation accuracy, with errors as low as 0.4 meters, and mapping quality characterized by a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of just 0.13 m. Notably, this performance is achieved while maintaining energy efficiency and balanced resource allocation, addressing a crucial concern in UAV applications. Flight tests further underscore the precision of our system in maintaining desired flight orientations, with a remarkable error rate of only 0.1%. This work represents a significant stride in the development of autonomous indoor UAV navigation systems, with potential applications in search and rescue, facility inspection, and environmental monitoring within GPS-denied indoor environments. © 2023 IEEE.

The current trend of Industry 4.0 is bringing significant changes to manufacturing processes, with the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) becoming essential platforms for achieving high-quality products and throughput. This paper proposes a novel system design for the digital transformation of a CNC milling machine towards Industry 4.0, using a sensor network based on Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) connected to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) IoT platform. The system uses two sensors, an inductive proximity sensor (KD18-3008PA) for spindle speed monitoring and an infrared thermal sensor (MLX90614-DCC) for monitoring the tool bit temperature. Data from the sensors is collected using the ESP32-WROOM, which transmits the collected data to the Raspberry Pi 4 (RPi 4) running micro-ROS agents. The RPi 4 acts as an IoT gateway, publishing data to AWS IoT core, where it is stored and visualized using Amazon QuickSight. The proposed system enables real-time monitoring of the CNC milling machine's performance, facilitating predictive maintenance and improving efficiency. The results show that the proposed system design effectively achieves digital transformation and can be scalable and flexible, making it suitable for various applications and as a foundation for further research in Industry 4.0. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper designs and implements the perception layer, network layer and application layer in the framework of environmental monitoring system. To minimize the bit error rate of free space optical communication (FSO) system under the limitation of multi-mode Gaussian background optical noise field and the energy efficiency of the received optical signal, an adaptive photoelectric array signal processing algorithm for intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) is proposed. Design and implement sensor data acquisition circuit, main control processor and peripheral circuit, system communication interface circuit in environmental monitoring system hardware. The data storage part mainly realizes the storage and processing of data, which involves cloud platform technology. The server platform realizes the final webpage display and large screen display, and the key technologies are communication technology. The analysis and simulation results show that the system can greatly reduce the computational complexity while the performance loss is almost negligible. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper describes a robotic jaw system capable of mimicking all six movements of the human jaw, managed by a wearable controller utilizing a linear distance sensor. Previous studies do focus on designing a robotic jaw, mimicking bite force, chewing, and other dental applications, thus, there is no existing controller that can be used for mimicking. The proponents will employ a wearable controller to control the robotic jaw and mimic six human jaw movements. The wearable controller is worn by the user and sends signals to the robotic jaw system to replicate the user's jaw movements. This replication will be evaluated by comparing the linear displacement of the human jaw, measured by the wearable controller, with the linear displacement of the robotic jaw system, as determined by the signals from the wearable controller. Both the wearable controller and the robotic jaw system will use GP2Y0A41SK0F Sharp Infrared sensors to measure their linear displacement in the six jaw movements: leftward jaw translation, rightward jaw translation, protrusion, retrusion, opening, and closing. The data collected from the Arduino and LabVIEW underwent statistical analysis with JMP software. Moreover, the results depict that the robotic jaw accurately mimics the human jaw movement. The study successfully created a system that can mimic human jaw movements using a wearable controller and a robotic jaw to be controlled. © 2024 IEEE.

Underwater wireless sensor networks are vital for gathering data from underwater surroundings. They are essential for several applications, including disaster recovery, environmental monitoring, and marine geographical surveys. Present UWSNs receive attention, especially since their overall performance is significantly affected by precision geographic node localization. This paper comprehensively studies the methods and algorithms implemented for localization under UWSNs, focusing on the specific difficulties in the underwater environment. The research investigates multiple approaches used in underwater localization, covering hybrid processes that integrate various technologies, those using sound waves, and those based on magnetic fields. These methods are analyzed to define their advantages and disadvantages, obtaining necessary knowledge on accuracy, energy consumption, and deployment costs. Moreover, the research reviews recent achievements in artificial intelligence and machine learning to address the issue of low accuracy in underwater localization. The project also investigates the factors affecting sensor node localization, which is essential for understanding the specific conditions of the process. Problems with underwater communication systems include node mobility, GPS signal absence, disadvantageous underwater conditions, and signal propagation in aquatic settings. This study examines how different barriers affect the design and implementation of localization algorithms in UWSNs. Through an analysis of the approaches, methods, and challenges specific to UWSNs, this paper provides a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and practitioners working in this field. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we delve into the significance of constructing mathematical models tailored to the underwater environment, shedding light on how they can aid in the analysis of system performance. Furthermore, this paper provides a valuable resource by listing and discussing suitable mathematical approaches that can be applied to the unique underwater environment. These approaches are indispensable for the development of efficient underwater communication systems and applications. By addressing the challenges and emphasizing the importance of mathematical modeling, this research contributes to the advancement of underwater wireless communication technologies, facilitating their widespread and effective use in critical domains. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper offers an overview of Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) and how they might be used in surveillance systems. With the help of WSNs, sensors may connect to one another and establish networks, enabling intelligent interactions with the physical world. In particular, the article addresses the need to solve energy efficiency issues while taking quality of service (QoS) and latency requirements into consideration. The research also emphasizes the need of energy-aware protocols in WSNs, especially for surveillance applications. The authors provide an overview of MAC protocols used in surveillance applications, looking at their presumptions, energy waste factors, and various protocols' efficacy. They go over many forms of communication, such as broadcast, converging cast, local gossip, and multicast, and they evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of MAC protocols, such as S-MAC, T-MAC, TRAMA, SIFT, and DSMAC. Collision avoidance, fair channel access, energy efficiency, support for quality of service, scalability, and adaptation to network dynamics are just a few of the characteristics of a well-defined MAC protocol that are covered. The paper also examines the uses of MAC protocols in WSNs, including asset tracking, home automation, environmental sensing, smart cities, precision agriculture, traffic monitoring, healthcare monitoring, intrusion detection systems, and environmental monitoring. An overview of the benefits and drawbacks of MAC protocols is presented in a comparison table at the end. According to the paper's conclusion, there is no standardized MAC protocol for sensor networks because the option depends on the particular application and its specifications. Researchers working on energy-aware procedures in WSNs, particularly in surveillance, are intended to benefit from the findings of this paper. © 2023 IEEE.

A large variety of networked devices are now available thanks to the wireless technology's quick growth, supporting a variety of applications. The wireless sensor network (WSN) is made up of tiny, battery-powered wireless devices that work together to exchange information over wireless channels to base station (BS). However, the WSN system posses several challenges, one cruicial issue is energy efficiency. The nodes in WSN eventually die because they are battery-powered, which happens to die after a given length of time. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce energy consumption during data exchange in order to provide energy efficiency and lengthen network lifetime. This paper proposes an energy-efficient optimal cluster-based routing approach for extending the network lifetime. The approach employs a cluster head rotation mechanism to balance the energy consumption among sensor nodes and prolong the network lifetime. The cluster head is rotated periodically to distribute the energy consumption among all nodes, thereby preventing nodes from running out of energy. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of energy consumption, network lifetime, and packet delivery ratio compared to existing routing protocols. © 2023 IEEE.
