The detection of motion is an essential preprocessing step in many vision based systems. While showing good performance in the visible or the infrared spectrum, some of the state-of-the-art background subtraction methods are quite sensitive to a change in the spectral range. In this paper, the robustness of various background subtraction algorithms is not only compared between visible and infrared video streams, but in addition to the robustness that can be achieved by fusing visible and infrared video streams. Thereby, we show the effects of several fusion methods on a large set of background subtraction algorithms. By analyzing quantitative results, we identify approaches which can benefit from fused sensor signals. Towards this end, we further analyze the effectiveness of 14 fusion strategies. The evaluation is done on the public available OSU Color-Thermal Database reflecting a typical outdoor surveillance scenario.

Recent advances in ambient energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks (WSNs) technologies have made it possible to power the network by energy generated from the environment and thereby increase its lifetime. Various energy sources including light, vibration and heat can be harvested by sensor nodes. However, time-varying energy harvesting also bring new design challenging for WSNs. In this paper, we study a fault-tolerant topology design problem for an energy-harvesting heterogeneous WSN, where multiple supernodes with rich resources are used to improve the performance. We first model the network as a directed and weighted space-time graph in which both spacial and temporal information are preserved. We then define the fault-tolerant topology problem which aims to build a sparser time-varying structure from the original space-time graph while maintaining k-connectivity for the fault-tolerant purpose. Six different algorithms are proposed to solve the problem. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed methods can save up to around 80% costs.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become one of the important areas in networking field. This is because sensors as compared to others are cheaper, efficient, adaptable and smaller. These sensors are having wireless interfaces to communicate with each other. The design of wireless sensor networks is application specific. Change in the application leads to change in the design of the network. Also network topologies vary if some physical changes in the network occur. The paper gives overview of the WSN. Also broad classification of applications of WSN is given briefly in this paper. Also the overview has been given on types on which these applications are based on.

The growth of wireless body area sensor networks (WBASNs) has led the way to advancements In healthcare applications and patient monitoring systems; epileptic seizure lies at the heart of these promising technologies. For real-time epileptic seizure detection, wireless EEG sensors have been utilized for the purpose of data acquisition, pre-processing and transmission to the server side. The dilemma of excessive power consumption of both data processing and transmission imposes strict constraints on battery-powered sensor nodes. The conventional streaming approach transmits raw EEG data as is, while consumes excessive transmission power. Other modalities consider lossy compression paradigms in order to reduce the transmitted data. This paper proposes on-board data reduction technique, which extracts low-complexity and high level, application-based, features at the sensor side. In particular, EEG spectrum is segmented to five frequency sub-bands; numerous combinations of these sub-bands are selected as feature vectors, and classification using k-nearest neighbor. Simulations have revealed that alpha and delta rhythms yield feature vectors for the EEG signals in the context of epileptic seizure detection. Satisfactory results have been obtained (around 92.47% accuracy). Moreover, the proposed approach outperforms both data streaming and compression techniques in terms of total power consumption and seizure detection performance.

Although it is obvious that using a trillion sensor nodes for wireless sensor network (WSN) application would deeply exacerbate the spectral congestion issue, RF-powered sensor nodes [1,2] still support only low spectral-efficiency modulation such as OOK. State-of-the-art standard-compliant RF transceivers for low-power applications have been achieving multilevel modulation such as n/8 D8PSK [3], but their power consumption is as large as 1mW without PA even in the 400MHz band because of the large power consumption of the RF synthesizer, which is required to provide high-frequency accuracy and low phase noise for multilevel modulation. This work presents an IF-based quadrature backscattering technique, enabling n-PSK and n-QAM without an RF PLL. The presented technique exploits the passive RFID technologies, but can realize both amplitude and phase modulation concurrently. Our TX in 65nm Si CMOS achieves spectral efficiency of 3.3b/s/Hz with 32QAM while consuming 113uW with a 0.6V power supply in our measurements, which has 6.6 times better spectral efficiency than previous RF-powered wireless transceivers [1,2]. The prototype RF-powered sensor node with our transceiver including the TX, RX, and an RF energy harvester (RF-EH), succeeds in a wireless temperature-sensing application.

3D human body shape matching has large potential on many real world applications, especially with the recent advances in the 3D range sensing technology. We address this problem by proposing a novel holistic human body shape descriptor called BodyPrint. To compute the bodyprint for a given body scan, we fit a deformable human body mesh and project the mesh parameters to a low-dimensional subspace which improves discriminability across different persons. Experiments are carried out on three real-world human body datasets to demonstrate that BodyPrint is robust to pose variation as well as missing information and sensor noise. It improves the matching accuracy significantly compared to conventional 3D shape matching techniques using local features. To facilitate practical applications where the shape database may grow over time, we also extend our learning framework to handle online updates.

Maximizing spectrum usage and numerous applications of the wireless communication networks have forced to a high interest of vacant spectrum. Cognitive Radio influences its receiver and transmitter features accurately so that they can utilize the vacant approved spectrum without impacting the functionality of the principal licensed subscribers. The use of various channels assists to address interferences thereby improves the whole network efficiency. The MAC protocol in cognitive radio network explains the spectrum consumption by interacting the multiple channels among the subscribers. In this particular paper we studied traditional TDMA dependent MAC method with dynamically assigned slots. The majority of the MAC protocols suggested in the research operate Common-Control-Channel (CCC) to handle the services between Cognitive Radio end users. Traditional MAC protocol design and operations are implemented by using Multi-Channel-Collection method, a high rate multi-channel time schedule protocol for unbiased real-time data collection and their limitations are studied in Wireless mesh Networks. In this paper, an extensive study of Multi-Channel-Collection with sophisticated techniques for multiple band or frequency range channel allotment and continually synchronized TDMA scheduling are shown in summarized way.

Asset tracking systems developed around the Internet of Things paradigm are composed of a collection of various objects interconnected by different communication technologies. Each of these devices function through local and/or remote interaction with the real world or other devices and systems. The problem of ensuring a dependable and responsive middleware that is capable of handling and servicing such devices, process voluminous data without compromising responsiveness is still eminent. In this paper, we present a solution that was designed using in-lining approach to deliver a middleware that acts as an insulator for hiding the internal workings of the asset tracking system prototype by providing homogenous and abstract environment to the highest layers. In order to evaluate the middleware, a laptop tracking and monitoring system that integrates various internet of things components (at least 4 components: RFIDs, wireless sensors, mobile phones and biometric readers) was implemented and tested within a university environment.

The subsystems that compose a HPC platform (e.g. CPU, memory, storage and network) are often designed and configured to deliver exceptional performance to a wide range of workloads. As a result, a large part of the power that these subsystems consume is dissipated as heat even when executing workloads that do not require maximum performance. Attempts to tackle this problem include technologies whereby operating systems and applications can reconfigure subsystems dynamically, such as by using DVFS for CPUs, LPI for network components, and variable disk spinning for HDDs. Most previous work has explored these technologies individually to optimise workload execution and reduce energy consumption. We propose a framework that performs on-line analysis of an HPC system in order to identify application execution patterns without a priori information of their workload. The framework takes advantage of reoccurring patterns to reconfigure multiple subsystems dynamically and reduce overall energy consumption. Performance evaluation was carried out on Grid'5000 considering both traditional HPC benchmarks and real-life applications.

Wide area surveillance and reconnaissance in many homeland security applications generally entails an airborne platform providing a desired view of the area of interest. The surveillance needs of large critical infrastructures and key resources that may span for miles, demand a field of view that exceeds that provided by a single airborne sensor. Image registration of aerial imagery can increase the field of view while providing a panoramic view. This increases the field of view without any modification to the optics, focal plane array, and associated hardware. Some of the primary limitations of existing image registration methods are generally (a) image and sensor noise, (b) lack of accuracy in the related correspondence points derivation, and (c) registration algorithms' computational complexity. In this work, we focus on a multi-stage image registration technique utilizing hybrid similarity measures for partially overlapped aerial imagery, in the presence of sensor uncertainty and noise. We show that the presented algorithm provides a reduction in search space, reducing the computational cost. Additionally, here the system noise is modelled and injected into the images to determine the algorithmic performance as a function of signal to noise ratio (SNR). The presented technique is also evaluated in a scenario where a hyper-spectral or multispectral system may have an image in a noisy part of the spectrum but can be registered by using registration parameters from another part of the spectrum.
