Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) connect sensors, i.e., independent nodes or computing devices located in the clothes, on the human body, or under a person’s skin, expanding over the whole body and connected through wireless networks. WBANs find a wide range of applications in the medical sector, like implanting Body sensor Networks (BSNs) for cancer screening, cardiovascular (CVD) monitoring, remote health monitoring systems, and telemedicine. They are also used for non-medical applications like sports and fitness monitoring, physical state monitoring, biometrics, etc. A textile antenna uses wearable, durable, and flexible textiles as either dielectric substrates or conductive materials. Microstrip patch antennas are widely used in WBAN and IoT applications due to their numerous advantages, like high gain, directivity, and ease of construction. In addition, these antennas have other safety considerations, e.g., they well isolate the radiating element from the body to meet the rated Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). In this paper, microstrip patch antennas with different types of textile dielectrics and conducting materials have been designed and simulated in MATLAB r2020a. According to the simulation results, textile antennas are suited for use with GSM, GPS, WLAN, and other technologies operating in the Industry Scientific Medical (ISM) band of frequencies. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the results shows that the microstrip antenna with the flectron patch and the polyurethane dielectric gives the highest gain of 26.96 and an efficiency of 99%. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

With the rapid economy development and increasing power demand, in order to achieve data sharing and complementarity, accessing wireless sensor networks (WSN) to power data communication networks for transmission is facing huge security challenges. The trust management mechanism based on residual energy proposed in this paper first evaluates the trust of nodes by the number of successful interactions and the number of failed interactions between nodes, establishes a trust management model, and effectively judges malicious nodes to ensure security. And secondly ensures the secure transmission of data. At the same time, the remaining energy of the node is considered and the evaluation index is set by weighting the remaining energy and trust value to select the optimal node to transmit data. The experimental results show that this method can effectively ensure the security and efficiency of network information transmission, and effectively solve the problem of wireless sensor network transmission in power systems. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Recent times have overseen exceedingly high crime rates, and the appalling situation demands additional personal security measures. In light of the new advancements in technology, the demand for wireless systems has witnessed tremendous affinity, with major domains rapidly attempting to adopt the technique into their custom applications. Security is one such domain where wireless technology has thescope to achieve numerous practical applications. In one such instance, this study deploys the WiFi protocol over an intruder detection system using a TI LaunchPadMSP430. The TI launchpad is connected to the NuttyFi board which provides it with the internet connectivity required to put it online. The motion sensor acts as the input device that triggers the alarm which triggers output devices for intruder warning, in this case, a buzzerin parallel. The system also updates the alert in real-time online over the Blynk web server. This article combines embedded programming, wireless communication, hardware components, and sensing to build an intruder alert system. Using a page from technological baskets like IoT, RF, andembedded systems, the system fulfils a crucial requirement of the current society. Cross-platform usage boosts the utility of this system, putting it in the hands of millions of users. © 2024 IEEE.

Accurate estimation of heart rates from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals during intense physical activity is a very challenging problem. In this study we investigated a novel technique to accurately reconstruct motion-corrupted ECG signals and HR based on time-varying spectral analysis. The algorithm is called Spectral filter algorithm for electrocardiogram Motion Artifacts and heart rate reconstruction (SegMA). The idea is to calculate time-frequency spectrum of ECG for each time shift of a windowed data segment and use the information from the spectrum to reconstruct HR during movement. The SegMA approach was applied to a datasets recorded in Chon Lab that includes 17 min recordings from 4 subjects during a challenging experimental protocol including walking, jogging, running, arm movement, wrist movement, body shaking, and weight lifting activities. The ECG and tri-axial accelerometer data were recorded from a wrist bands on both right and left wrists that are connected with wire through a tight suit. The reference ECG signals were recorded from chest using Holter monitor. The algorithm's accuracy was calculated by computing the mean absolute error between SegMA reconstructed HR from the wrist ECG and the reference HR from the Holter ECG. The average estimation errors using our method on this datasets are around 1 beats/min. These results show that the SegMA method has a potential for ECG-based HR monitoring in wearable devices for fitness tracking and health monitoring during intense physical activities.

In this growing world of technology, the wide range of uses of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), such as tracking the environment and keeping an eye on the military, makes them indispensable in many applications. However, due to their open nature and limited resources, WSNs have become an easy target for different security threats, like intrusion attempts. Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) protect WSNs from these threats. This research examines the intrusion detection methods for WSNs and focuses on those that use computational intelligence. This review explores the usefulness of different computational intelligence methods in detecting intrusions in WSNs. It also suggests areas where more research is needed and offers possible directions for further exploration. © 2024 IEEE.

Autonomous underwater operations require robust and accurate navigation capabilities, a basic requirement for both precise position and velocity estimation, as well as motion compensation and geo-referencing of exteroceptive sensor data. A great number of theoretical approaches to sensor fusion and filtering can be found in literature, but they have to be matched with practical issues such as multi-rate sampling, measurement glitching, environmental conditions. For these reasons, the preparation, tuning and exploitation of navigation systems require different development steps to achieve reliability and robustness. This paper reports the practical experience of the exploitation of a multi-module extended Kalman filter based navigation system employed on the e-URoPe AUV/ROV. The paper shows the results of motion estimation including linear velocity and position (both horizontal and vertical), as well as angular position and rate. The proposed navigation system relies on the measurement fusion gathered by a variety of sensors: USBL, DVL, FOG, AHRS, depth-meter, GPS (when surfaced). Global concerns over pollution have led to increasingly strict emissions legislation targeting small engines, which currently pollute at a much greater level than modern multi-cylinder automotive engines. Closed-loop control may be required to meet many future legislation requirements;however, such systems can be impractical due to high added component costs. A necessary component for closed-loop engine control is an oxygen sensor. Existing automotive oxygen sensors are too large, require too much power, and are far too expensive to be suitable for the vast majority of the global small engine applications;therefore, some manufacturers have developed smaller and/or unheated versions based on their existing sensors to meet this emerging need. The ability to miniaturize resistive based sensors well below that of traditional Nernst (zirconia based) oxygen sensors affords the opportunity to meet future emissions standards with less of an impact on cost. The performance of a novel low-cost, low-power, narrow-band resistive-based oxygen sensor was compared with the stock oxygen sensor and several other commercially available oxygen sensors on a 2014 Honda Grom 125E motorcycle. Tests were performed at various engine speeds under no-load as well as under various load conditions on a chassis dynamometer. Results indicate this resistive-based sensor technology is well suited for such high RPM motorcycle applications, with a faster light-off time, a stronger signal, and faster sensor switching speeds than the current commercial sensors. A simulation model for laser triangulation sensor is given based on the non-sequential mode of ZEMAX, and the Lambertian scattering model is adopted to simulate the light intensity received by the detector while the object is tilting. The simulation model includes the power, divergence angle and energy distribution of the laser, as well as the scattering characteristics and construction features of the detector. The simulation results indicate that the tilt error increases when the tilt angle becomes larger under the same displacement, which shows a linear relationship. The tilt error also increases as the displacement increases under the same tilt angle. The maximum tilt error around the X-axis is -22.58 mu m, while the maximum tilt error around the Y-axis is -1.09 mu m. When tilting around the X-axis, the tilt errors caused by positive rotation and negative rotation are the same, but opposite in sign. When tilting around Y-axis, both the value and the sign of the positive and negative tilt errors are the same. The minimum tilt error appears near the reference position. The farther away from the reference position, the greater of tilt error. According to the simulation results, reasons for tilt error are analyzed. Because of the existing of the tilt angle, the scattered field of the laser beam changes, which give rise to the asymmetry of the energy distribution received by the detector. The greater the tilt angle, the larger the spot diameter, which leads to the offset of the centroid and causes the tilt error. Three correction methods for tilt error are proposed. The first method is to install the sensors with the tilt axis paralleling to the receiving plane. The second one is to carry out the measurement near the reference position. The third is to compensate the tilt error with both simulation data and experimental data. The simulation model and one of the correction methods were verified by experiments. This paper presents a framework for the virtualization of real world objects and the cognitive management of their virtual counterparts. The framework consists of three levels of functionality and each level comprises cognitive entities that provide the means for self-management and learning, allowing for smart, flexible applications and objects. The presented framework enables the abstraction of the heterogeneity that derives from the vast amount of diverse objects/devices, while enhancing reliability and facilitates the consideration of the views of various users/stakeholders (owners of objects & communication means) for ensuring proper application provision, business integrity and, therefore, maximization of exploitation opportunities. The paper also presents a corresponding prototype that has been developed for the validation of the proposed approach, in a real-life fire detection scenario in a Smart Home.

The random fiber laser (RFL) combining a 3×3 coupler phase interrogation technique is demonstrated and applied to acoustic emission (AE) detection for damage detection of buoyant materials. The random chirped grating array (RCGA) is used to provide random distributed feedback and act as an AE sensing head. The random distributed feedback inside RCGA significantly extends the effective cavity length of the RFL, thus reduces the thermal frequency noise of the RFL and improves the resolution of AE signal. A p-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (p-FBG) loop mirror is used as a wavelength locking to ensure a stable and narrow lasing. A high AE signal resolution of 2.6×10-7 pm/vHz@10 kHz is achieved. © 2022 SPIE.
