Most research work on WSNs has focused on protocols or on specific applications. There is a clear lack of easy/ready-to-use WSN technologies and tools for planning, implementing, testing and commissioning WSN systems in an integrated fashion. While there exists a plethora of papers about network planning and deployment methodologies, to the best of our knowledge none of them helps the designer to match coverage requirements with network performance evaluation. In this paper we aim at filling this gap by presenting an unified toolset, i.e., a framework able to provide a global picture of the system, from the network deployment planning to system test and validation. This toolset has been designed to back up the EMMON WSN system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. It includes network deployment planning, worst-case analysis and dimensioning, protocol simulation and automatic remote programming and hardware testing tools. This toolset has been paramount to validate the system architecture through DEMMON1, the first EMMON demonstrator, i.e., a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date.

Environmental Monitoring (EM) has witnessed significant improvements in recent years due to the great utility of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Nevertheless, due to harsh operational conditions in such applications, WSNs often suffer large-scale damage in which nodes fail concurrently and the network gets partitioned into disjoint sectors. Thus, reestablishing connectivity between the sectors, via their remaining functional nodes, is of utmost importance in EM, especially in forestry. In this regard, considerable work has been proposed in the literature tackling this problem by deploying Relay Nodes (RNs) aimed at reestablishing connectivity. Although finding the minimum relay count and positions is NP-Hard, efficient heuristic approaches have been anticipated. However, the majority of these approaches ignore the surrounding environment characteristics and the infinite 3-dimensional (3-D) search space that significantly degrades network performance in practice. Therefore, we propose a 3-D grid-based deployment for RNs in which the relays are efficiently placed on grid vertices. We present a novel approach, named fixing augmented network damage intelligently, based on a minimum spanning tree construction to re-connect the disjointed WSN sectors. The performance of the proposed approach is validated and assessed through extensive simulations, and comparisons with two main stream approaches are presented. Our protocol outperforms the related work in terms of the average relay node count and distribution, the scalability of the federated WSNs in large-scale applications, and the robustness of the topologies formed.

With the rapid increase of countries population worldwide, crowd management is becoming more and more important issue all over the world. The importance of location determination is even becoming more critical especially during the events with large numbers of people that is approximated in millions such as in Pilgrimage and Umra events. Nowadays, there are many new technologies including wireless sensor networks and mobile cloud computing that can be utilized to provide useful applications and services. Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj) and Umra are the largest gathering events for the Muslims in the holy city Makkah from all over the world. Individuals who want to perform pilgrimage or Umra rituals should do specific worship tasks in specific locations and time periods. Every year more than three million Muslims come to Makkah to perform Pilgrimage during Al-Hajj months and more than 13 million Muslims perform Umra in a calendar year. This situation requires secure and safe management for these crowds. In this research, we developed a mobile application that provides dynamic interactive maps to facilitate and assist the performance of pilgrimage and Umra. After the visitor specify the desired destination in and around Makkah, the application detects his/her GPS location and generates dynamic interactive map giving the best path to reach the desired destination. The path determination is based on the crowdedness percentage values which are derived from wireless sensor network that cover the area. So, the lowest-cost path is provided to the user from his current location to the desired destination. The generated best path is viewed as an interactive map. Also, there is audio description for this path to help elder people. Our application is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems. We followed the Software Engineering design principles including the Unified Modeling Language standards during the application development process. Many demos and experiments were performed
