Underwater Wireless sensor Networks (UWSNs) carry out collaborative monitoring and data gathering activities utilizing components like sensors and vehicles placed in a defined acoustic area. These sensor nodes communicate within that area of network and transmit signal to ground-based stations for data collection. UWSN's data gathering has proven useful in a range of underwater surveillance, data analysis, and exploration applications. Working on these applications, the following issues arise: restricted bandwidth, increased propagation latency, network design, data transmission command, routing, bandwidth utilization, and power limits. Several UWSN routing techniques are developed to improve and maximize data collection efficiency. In this work, a periodic overview of data aggregation is presented in order to grab the attention of academic scholars. A comparative analysis of several approaches is also depicted with their advantages and disadvantages. The challenges identified through the review of existing approaches is mentioned for further research. © 2022 IEEE.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) has grown exponentially in last few years and WSN based applications, including Home automation, healthcare, the environment, and the military are being used on a large scale. Despite of their powerful capabilities, as sensor nodes are resource constraint devices, implementation of WSNs is a challenging task. Lots of research has been already done to minimize energy, sensor nodes consumed in performing miscellaneous tasks, to improve the life time of the WSNs. LEACH protocol is most common bases for designing advanced routing protocols for improved power efficient WSNs. In this paper, a comprehensive review of existing power efficacy improved routing protocols has been done. Performance of these routing protocols has been also compared in term of various WSN characteristics. This paper also highlights key technological differences between most recent routing protocols. The review may be considered as a base for future research to design more routing protocols, for WSN applications, with better energy management techniques. © 2022 IEEE.

Underwater Wireless sensor Network (UWSN) is used for oceanic applications like navigation, monitoring, exploration, observation, etc. For these applications, sensors are deployed in the ocean to gather data. These sensor nodes are easy to deploy but tough to manage for getting the desired location data. N ode localization in UWSN is the must mechanism to identify the location of sensors. Due to water crest-trough, habitat-sea vehicle movement, these nodes may get displacement up to 3m/s, that results in data error. Thus, localization of nodes is an essential process in UWSN to make the gathered data meaningful and useful. In this paper, different localization schemes are discussed with the performance comparison. Further, some state-of-art localization schemes are also compared with network simulators to analyze the performance based on QoS matrices like energy consumption, and error rate. The aim of the paper is to draw the attention of researchers in this field. © 2022 IEEE.

Autonomous navigation, while still facing a lot of challenges, has become a reality in the last few years. It has been successfully deployed in limited environments, showing the potential such technologies offer. The availability of increased computational power, coupled with advances in machine learning techniques, including deep learning, have enabled this success. However, there are many challenges that need to be overcome to enable massive adoption of autonomous navigation in all environments. One such challenge is to provide reliable, low-latency, and cost-effective data processing solutions for compute-heavy applications. To address this challenge, data processing near the data source, that is, at an edge cloud has been proposed. In this paper, we share our experience in implementing one such edge cloud, designed to bring compute power close to resource-constrained end devices in an autonomous navigation testbed, named as Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation and Data Acquisition Systems (TiHAN). By considering some use cases, we show how deploying this edge cloud at the testbed has greatly benefited the performance of autonomous navigation applications.

The expanding Internet of Things (IoT) and the sensor network subsystem they are bound to collaboratively contribute to the growing smart technology ecosystem that uses wireless sensor networks presenting the fastest growing attack surface for malware. The smart technology ecosystem integrates processes in the home consumer sector, industry, and economic environments through sensors and wireless sensor networks (WSN). The system is exposed to an expanded attack surface that introduces new attack vectors which are exploited in novel ways for which new mitigative measures are needed. The review aims to find out how latest technologies already known to be effective for attack detection in other realms can be utilised for early attack detection on sensor nodes deployed in WSN and IoST. A review of recent systematically compiled articles on effective detection of attacks on sensors is done focusing on usage of new technologies and their effectiveness. The work showed that early attack detection is feasible and effective. Designs that use contractual models built through integration of AI, ML, or block chain with sensor node sourced data for training and the use of established data sets succeeded in the tasked detection functions. The research intended to find how detecting attacks early in IoT sensor nodes could be used in an advantageous way to mitigate against attacks on the IoT ecosystem. The literature shows there are process with that capability that can still be enhanced to perform better. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Directional sensor networks (DSNs) are still receiving consideration in different fields of high-level monitoring applications. However, unlike traditional omni-directional sensors, directional sensors are characterized by a limited sensing angle, which causes various problems for satisfying the coverage quality requirements of a critical region. In this paper, a novel distributed algorithm is proposed to significantly improve the area coverage ratio using a DSN. Based on a directional sensor node model combined with geometry concepts, we provide each directional sensor with the ability to calculate the most appropriate working direction. This solution allows us to maximize coverage, in such a way to obtain a better surveillance quality in monitoring and control applications. To extend the network lifetime, redundant sensors are exploited to keep just a set of directional sensors in active mode. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively improves the area coverage ratio compared to the existing algorithms. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper proposes a unique reduced component sensor-based topology of capacitor-switched multilevel inverter (CSMLI) which is compatible for low, medium and high voltage application. In this configuration only one voltage source is required. The proposed circuit is a seven-level inverter that uses least number of switches with only one capacitor and one voltage source. Special attention is given to charging of capacitor, eliminating any kind of voltage imbalance or abrupt change in voltage across capacitor with minimum inrush charging current. The design of the circuit is accomplished to have minimum voltage stress across various circuit elements. The operational principle of this inverter and some known modulation strategies are used to evaluate the overall circuit performance. The proposed work is compared with other work of similar type with regards to device count and performance. The simulation with result verification is carried out to validate the proposed circuit. © 2023 IEEE.

High communication overhead is a challenging problem in Federated Learning (FL), which needs to be minimized. One way to reduce the overall communication overhead is directed to fast optimization methods, which can reduce the number of communication rounds by improving the convergence of the global model. This paper introduces Nys-FL, which aims to accelerate the convergence of federated learning by incorporating global data distribution and Nystrom approximated global Newton direction, while updating the global model. Nys-FL uses federated Gaussian mixture models (FedGMMs) to find the global data distribution. Extensive experiments on several heterogeneously partitioned datasets show that Nys-FL significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art federated algorithms such that FedProx, SCAFFOLD, GIANT and DONE in term of reduced communication rounds, while achieving a certain precision of the global model's convergence. © 2023 IEEE.

Ensuring the continual and sustainable provision of a crucial water supply for various life forms necessitates effective water quality monitoring. The integration of modern wireless network technologies, coupled with intelligent algorithms, significantly enhances the efficiency and accuracy of this monitoring process. Among the protocols designed for routing in heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (HWSN), TDEEC stands out for its simplicity, capacity to handle extensive data sets, and prolonged network lifespan. In this research, we propose the utilization of an adapted algorithm, FTDEEC, in conjunction with the firefly algorithm, aiming to optimize the routing of three-dimensional water quality data. This optimization is crucial for making real-time decisions. The study focuses on simulating and evaluating the optical detection of peroxide pollutants using the fluorescence quenching mechanism. The application of the firefly algorithm plays a pivotal role in optimizing the energy consumption during group leader election (CH) and hierarchical group formation, maximizing data flow, and extending network life. Simulation results demonstrate the commendable efficiency of our modified firefly algorithm-based hierarchical data clustering and routing protocol. This protocol achieves high throughput with lower time complexity during data collection and processing operations compared to alternative protocols.

To address the challenges of target detection and precise positioning for quadruped robots in complex environments, this paper proposes a method that combines an improved YOLOv8 model with IMU-UWB integrated positioning technology. In terms of target detection, the YOLOv8 model was optimized by replacing the original backbone with the lightweight ShuffleNetV2 and removing certain convolutional modules, reducing parameters by 43% (from 11.17M to 6.39M) to enhance efficiency on embedded devices. While mAP50-95 dropped to 60.35%. The mAP50-95 dropped to 60.35%, which lead to a slight decrease of 7% compared to the original model. The model maintained high accuracy under less strict conditions with a mAP50 of 93.4%, comparable to the original's 93.8%. This optimization provides a balance between reduced computational complexity and robust detection performance for embedded applications. In terms of positioning technology, this paper integrates IMU and UWB technologies, utilizing an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to achieve multi-sensor data fusion. This method fully leverages the dynamic response characteristics of IMU and the high-precision positioning capability of UWB, reducing positioning errors to within 0.5 meters, significantly enhancing the system's stability and robustness. The combination of these two methods greatly improves the perception capability and autonomy of quadruped robots in complex scenarios, demonstrating broad potential for applications in fields such as drone collaboration and autonomous driving. ©2024 IEEE.
