As the physical limits of Moore's law are being reached, a research effort is launched to achieve further performance improvements by exploring computation paradigms departing from standard approaches. The BAMBI project (Bottom-up Approaches to Machines dedicated to Bayesian Inference) aims at developing hardware dedicated to probabilistic computation, which extends logic computation realised by boolean gates in current computer chips. Such probabilistic computing devices would allow to solve faster and at a lower energy cost a wide range of Artificial Intelligence applications, especially when decisions need to be taken from incomplete data in an uncertain environment. This paper describes an architecture where very simple operators compute on a time coding of probability values as stochastic signals. Simulation tests and a reconfigurable logic hardware implementation demonstrated the feasibility and performances of the proposed inference machine. Hardware results show this architecture can quickly solve Bayesian sensor fusion problems and is very efficient in terms of energy consumption.

In this paper two new topologies for current-mode Wheatstone bridge (CMWB) are presented. The circuits, unlike other CMWB topologies, are based on two second generation voltage conveyors (VCII) as basic building blocks and two nMOS transistors operating as variable resistor. The outputs of both circuits are intrinsically linear function of Delta R. Compared to previously reported CMWB circuits, the proposed topologies offer several advantages. Firstly, they do not require any extra voltage buffer at output i.e. the produced output voltage can be directly used in practical applications. Secondly, they do not employ any passive resistor while there are multiple grounded and floating resistors in other CMWBs. Thirdly, they have the capability to electronically control the gain without a significant impact on consumed power. To confirm the proposed theory, PSpice simulation results using 0.35 mu m CMOS technology parameters are presented.

Most research work on WSNs has focused on protocols or on specific applications. There is a clear lack of easy/ready-to-use WSN technologies and tools for planning, implementing, testing and commissioning WSN systems in an integrated fashion. While there exists a plethora of papers about network planning and deployment methodologies, to the best of our knowledge none of them helps the designer to match coverage requirements with network performance evaluation. In this paper we aim at filling this gap by presenting an unified toolset, i.e., a framework able to provide a global picture of the system, from the network deployment planning to system test and validation. This toolset has been designed to back up the EMMON WSN system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. It includes network deployment planning, worst-case analysis and dimensioning, protocol simulation and automatic remote programming and hardware testing tools. This toolset has been paramount to validate the system architecture through DEMMON1, the first EMMON demonstrator, i.e., a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date.

Real-time observation of intracellular process of signal transduction is very useful for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications as well as for basic research work of cell biology. For feasible and reagentless observation of intracellular alterations in real time, we examined the use of a nonadiabatic tapered optical fiber (NATOF) biosensor for monitoring of intracellular signal transduction that was mainly translocation of protein kinase C via refractive index change in PC12 cells adhered on tapered fiber sensor without any indicator reagent. PC12 cells were stimulated with KCl. Our results suggest that complex intracellular reactions could be real-time monitored and characterized by NATOF biosensor.

This paper will describe in some detail two new large area CCD image sensors designed specifically to be used either as a single imager or assembled in mosaics of CCDs. The devices have 2048x4096, 15 mu m pixels;the difference being the orientation of the serial register. Performance data are presented on both front- and back-illuminated parts. In addition, a new production camera test system will also be described which is being used to screen test the Advanced Camera CCDs for the Wide Field and High Resolution Channels.
