Wired networks are the backbone of most modern systems. Even with the continuous progress of wireless technologies, cables are still the main media of power transmission and communication. Nevertheless, during manufacturing, assembly, and normal functioning, cables are susceptible to aging leading to defects, which prevent systems from well achieving their intended functions with the expected performance or even lead to total failure and long downtimes, leading thereby to a serious problem of reliability. In this paper, we propose a novel low-cost method based on multi-sensor data fusion to identify hard faults, i.e., open and short circuits in complex wired networks composed of multiple independent subnetworks. It can automatically adapt its parameters to meet the limited frequency of the low-cost embedded system and to the network wires lengths. To experimentally validate the method, a low-cost embedded system has been developed. The proposed method has been applied on a wired network with 18 ports and five independent subnetworks, including three open-circuit faults and four short-circuit faults. The processing time needed to measure the networks' responses and identify the seven defects was 11 ms on an Arduino Mega 2560 board, corresponding to 90 cycles per second. This noticeably short processing time allows this method to detect intermittent faults by monitoring instant changes in the network topology.

Telemonitoring, telemedicine, and telerehabilitation are becoming essential technologies for improving health-care. Particularly useful for assessing the physical and cognitive status of frail individuals, telemonitoring has applications in elder care and neurodegenerative disease management. This study presents a smart room prototype for medium to long-term telemonitoring of frail subjects. The system captures real-time video/data from various sources, processes it with advanced AI, and displays the results for real-time viewing and control. Its modular architecture includes components like pressure floors and sensorized mattresses, integrated via a web-based interface. The system effectively evaluates subject interactions in the sensorized environment, with real-time Mobility and Sleep Indexes to track activities. © 2024 ICROS.

In-sensor computing has emerged as a promising approach to mitigating huge data transmission costs between sensors and processing units. Recently, the emerging application scenarios have raised more demands of sensory technology for large-area and flexible integration. However, with thin-film technologies that are capable of providing flexible and large-area integration support, the implementation of in-sensor computing can be strongly restricted due to the low device performance, large-area integration variation, and costly interface between sensors and CMOS processors. To address this challenge, we propose an in-sensor computing architecture to facilitate high-parallelism NN pre-processing and effective data compression. The boundaries of computing parallelism are expanded by adopting compact ROM-based compute-in-memory scheme next to sensing array. Differential-frame computing provides not only excellent robustness, but also high data sparsity. A bio-inspired data compression method with residual recovery caches and zero-skip circuits further enhances output sparsity without accumulated error. Based on the proposed cross-layer design optimization, an LTPS TFT-based ROM CiM chip has been fabricated and experimentally measured. The system-level evaluation demonstrates 3.85× speedup and 5.10× energy efficiency improvement compared with traditional architecture with separated sensors and processors, outperforming existing in-sensor computing works in large-area thin-film technology scenarios. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In recent years, the issue of ventilation has gradually gained attention from the public. However, the currently available low-end Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) facilities lack affordable sensor module options, particularly when it comes to CO2 sensors that can be integrated into ventilation facilities. The high cost of CO2 sensors often discourages their inclusion in general households' ventilation facilities or the implementation of ventilation control features. In light of this, this study proposes a sensor module that not only comes at a lower cost but can also be seamlessly integrated with ventilation facilities. This advancement aims to enable autonomous control of ventilation facilities airflow, thereby enhancing energy efficiency and reducing facility costs in the future. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2023.

This research represents a current sensor less MPPT method for solar systems using a high-gain DC-DC boost converter. A method has been proposed to enhance the efficiency of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) in photovoltaic systems utilizing one input voltage sensor and eliminating the need for expensive current sensors. In certain scenarios, the efficiency of the proposed method in terms of tracking accuracy and drift-free features is demonstrated through experimental results, where the presented approach shows promise for improving the overall performance of photovoltaic systems. Also, an improved structure will be presented under the title of a high-gain boost converter for solar cell applications. In general, the advantages of the designed converter include voltage gain and high efficiency, low voltage stress for switches and diodes, providing soft switching conditions, and finally reducing the volume of magnetic elements and the overall volume of the circuit. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Over the years, SAW devices have been providing solutions to many sensors needs such as measurement of temperature, strain, and magnetic field. SAW sensors are passive (battery-less), small, lightweight, low cost, sensitive, can be operated wirelessly, and capable of including multiple identification coding schemes. With the everyday advances of different technologies, there is increasing use of the electromagnetic spectrum, and many emerging applications need to use higher frequencies. SAW sensors have been commonly developed to work on different frequencies up to 3 GHz;however, SAW sensor operation at higher frequencies had been demonstrated to be a challenge due to minimum size fabrication limitations and higher propagation losses in the sensor response. This paper presents the development of a wireless SAW temperature sensor at 4.74 GHz. Harmonic operation of the SAW device is used to demonstrate the capability of the SAW technology to impact higher frequencies. Near range, wireless temperature measurements using 3" harmonic 4.74 GHz SAW temperature sensors have been achieved. SAW device response predictions will be given using the coupling of modes (COM) model and compared with device measurements. Antenna design and device embodiment with SAW device matched to the antenna impedance will be presented. Interrogation of the 4.74 GHz temperature sensor and preliminary measurements of temperature using an SDR transceiver system will be given. This work aims to bring the inherent benefits of SAW technology to 4.74 GHz providing sensor solutions to actual and future applications.

This research focuses on the modeling of human gait in order to recognize a human by their walking style. Gait analysis is a very important parameter, especially for biometric systems and also for healthcare applications. In this research, human gait is captured by using only a single Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor, which is positioned on top of the ankle. MATLAB mobile application is used to access the IMU sensor. A small study of 30 participants was conducted and two databases are then developed with different features. The first database contains only IMU sensor data, while the second database contains information on the height and gender of each participant. Both databases are used to train and test four different machine learning algorithms and their performances are compared. The experimental results show that the acquired setup performs well for classification purposes. Results from both databases are comparable and provide sufficient accuracy in the recognition task.

This study focuses on the development of an obstacle avoidance robot controlled by an ultrasonic sensor. The robot utilizes robotics and artificial intelligence techniques to improve obstacle avoidance and enhance safety in various scenarios, particularly in the context of road accidents. The system incorporates an Arduino microcontroller and ultrasonic sensors that detect obstacles within the robot's path. By processing the sensor data, the microcontroller employs artificial intelligence algorithms to predict the presence of obstacles in real-time. The ultrasonic sensor is strategically positioned at the front of the robotic vehicle, continuously gathering data from the surrounding area. When an obstacle is detected, the robot autonomously adjusts its direction to avoid collision. The sensor relays the collected data to the microcontroller, which then determines the appropriate movement and direction for the robot's wheels. Consequently, the robot built with our approach is satisfactorily able to detect obstacles and avoid them, with a remarkable accuracy rate of 84%. This proactive approach to obstacle detection and avoidance aims to prevent potential accidents and promote safer navigation. The obstacle avoidance robot serves as a practical solution for detecting and avoiding obstacles, with potential applications in various domains. By combining robotics, artificial intelligence, and sensor technologies, this study contributes to the development of intelligent systems capable of autonomously navigating their environment while ensuring safety. © 2023 IEEE.

A significant shift in contemporary medical treatment is represented by combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) into telemedicine, virtual medical treatments, and remote patient monitoring. An increasing elderly demographic, the rise of chronic illnesses, and unequal access to healthcare treatment are driving up the need for worldwide medical structures, and AI is emerging as a key instrument in tackling these urgent problems. This investigation utilized a smart monitoring gadget with an IoT emphasis to monitor the heart rate of elderly people. The device tracks patients' GPS statistics in real-time and informs healthcare professionals of any confinement violations for any emergency. The smart sensor connects to a networking interface in the IoT cloud, which processes and analyzes data to determine bodily functioning. The suggested architecture has 3 levels of functionality: a cloud tier with Application Peripherals Interfaces for mobile gadgets, smart IoT detectors, and smartphone applications. Each layer has a particular role. Statistics from the IoT perception tier are initially gathered to detect heart attacks. This layer stores data in a cloud server for preventative measures, alerts, and speedy actions. The smartphone program alerts the patient and the family during emergencies. This study proposes CNN-UUGRU, a new deep neural network architecture that combines convolutional and upgraded gated recurrent segments for identifying human actions. This system outperformed other deep neural networks on the Kaggle database, accomplishing 97.8% accuracy, 96.9% precision, and an F-value of 97.85%. © 2025 IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been used as a promising technology that enables a variety of smart city applications such as Internet of Things (IoT), healthcare, transportation, education, manufacturing, and energy management. However, the ubiquitous deployment of sensor devices requires sophisticated communication techniques to ensure seamless connectivity especially in geographic areas where sensor devices are not supported by stable network connectivity such as rural areas. In this paper, ring topology is proposed for device-to-device (D2D) communication in ubiquitous sensor environments. The proposed scheme aims to achieve workload balancing while ensuring successful message dissemination among the sensor nodes. To this end, the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) is used to achieve load balancing such that each of the communicating nodes participates only once by receiving and forwarding the message to the next node in a ring fashion until returning to the originating node. The TSP approach generally aims to minimize the total trip distance of the multi-hop path in the D2D network and ensures that all nodes will receive the message. This approach is compared with the greedy approach whereby each sensor node determines the next hop based on the minimum distance only. Results show that the proposed scheme ensures load balancing and guarantees that all sensor nodes will receive the message. © 2022 IEEE.
