The field of mobile robotics has become increasingly significant in today's technology-driven world, with applications ranging from autonomous vehicles to automated delivery systems. This project aims to enhance the capabilities of mobile robots in navigating and exploring unfamiliar environments by developing and implementing a Reinforcement Learning (RL) model. The core objective is to enable these robots to autonomously explore, navigate, and adapt to new surroundings efficiently. By integrating the RL model into a mobile robot using the Robot Operating System (ROS), the project evaluates the system's efficiency through comprehensive ground experiments. The research compares the RL-based approach with established exploration methods, emphasizing the effectiveness of the Value Iteration algorithm, a dynamic programming algorithm for Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). Controlled experiments conducted in a 6×3 meter flat space with static obstacles and a 2D lidar sensor provide valuable insights into the RL model's performance and potential real-world applications. The findings highlight the advantages of the Value Iteration algorithm over traditional exploration methods, demonstrating its potential for improving autonomous robotic navigation and exploration.

Against the backdrop of the rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, onboard visual navigation systems have become the core support technology for achieving precise positioning and efficient map construction of UAVs. This paper deeply explores the key technologies of sensor data spatiotemporal synchronization in onboard visual navigation systems, aiming to solve the synchronization issues in multi-sensor data fusion in variable environments, and enhance the navigation accuracy and reliability of UAVs. The research covers both spatial and temporal synchronization dimensions, with a focus on the technical implementation of Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO). For spatial synchronization, a target-based method is proposed to construct an error equation for solving the extrinsic parameters between the camera and the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), achieving precise alignment of sensor coordinate systems through the identification and matching of visual target feature points. In terms of temporal synchronization, considering the data frequency differences between the camera and IMU, this paper designs a time alignment strategy that realizes efficient temporal alignment of data through data buffering and timestamp matching. Additionally, the initialization and local sliding window optimization process of the Visual-Inertial Odometry are detailed, achieving high-precision fusion of visual and inertial data through feature extraction, optical flow tracking, and motion structure recovery. Experimental results show that the methods proposed in this paper can technically provide strong support for the autonomous flight of UAVs, effectively improving the navigation performance of UAVs in complex environments, and enhancing the robustness of the system.

Agriculture 4.0 represents the fourth agricultural revolution, harnessing digital technologies to foster a more intelligent, efficient, and environmentally responsible sector. The integration of sensors empowers farmers to gather data for optimizing crop growth and yield while minimizing resource usage such as water and fertilizers. Additionally, sensor applications extend to monitoring the health and behavior of agricultural workers, enhancing their well-being and productivity. Much research focuses on vibration analysis;however, solutions applied to machines for controlling high vibration levels are scarce. Although sensors are widely used to monitor machine processes, their primary focus is on the machine itself. This study aims to introduce a smart solution for real-time monitoring, generating timely alerts for tractor operators when vibrations surpass safety thresholds, potentially impacting seat adjustments or operating conditions (e.g., forward speed). In the initial phase, real-time Whole Body Vibration (WBV) and Seat Effective Width Transmissibility (SEAT) measurements were conducted. Simultaneously, vibration measurements on the seat shell were performed to evaluate the acceleration transfer function between the seat structure and the seat itself. Tests involved three operators with different masses, simulating conditions of incorrect seat adjustment and excessive forward speed. The developed system, independent of the tractor's existing electronics, enables the display of the A(8) parameter and identification of impulsive phenomena. An alert condition, indicating the exceeding of threshold values mandated by legislative decree 81/2008, is signaled through a small display and flashing LED light. Due to its affordability, the system can be seamlessly integrated into seats and connected to the dashboard, providing operators with indications on the level of exposure to WBV risk, thereby mitigating risks for operators. © The Author(s), under exclusive license

The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a powerful tool for remote environmental monitoring, attracting considerable interest from the research community. Through IoT-enabled wireless technologies, various applications such as Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), healthcare, home automation, and precision agriculture have benefited from enhanced monitoring capabilities. The functionality of IoT applications is centred around sensor nodes, which are deployed in the field to collect data and transmit it to a base station (BS) for processing. However, IoT networks that utilize Wireless sensor Networks (WSN) face significant challenges. Two major issues are energy efficiency, which affects the longevity and performance of the network, and security vulnerabilities, which expose the system to a variety of threats such as sinkhole attacks, black hole attacks, and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. These security concerns can severely disrupt communication and compromise the integrity of the data being transmitted. This survey paper focuses on examining recent security strategies designed to mitigate such threats in IoT networks. A systematic review was conducted to explore lightweight security solutions, with particular attention to trust-based and probe route-based mechanisms. These mechanisms offer promising approaches to safeguarding IoT networks while maintaining efficiency. The paper also presents a comparative analysis of these methods, evaluating them based on security techniques, types of attacks they address, and key performance metrics such as energy consumption and response times. The findings of this paper serve as a critical evaluation of the existing research, highlighting the strengths and limitations of the security measures reviewed. Through this comparative analysis, the study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of various security approaches in protecting IoT-enabled networks from evolving cyber threats.

Precision and energy-efficient sensor interfaces have always been needed in loT applications. To digitize weak signals (tens of mVs), such as shunt-based current and biomedical sensors, the interface should have low noise [1]–[4]. Moreover, to accommodate different use cases, the bandwidth (BW) and power dissipation of sensor interfaces should be highly scalable [5]–[7]. sensor interfaces based on discrete-time (DT) ADCs, such as SAR ADCs [8], [9] and FIA-based ΔΣ ADCs [5]–[7] are BW/power scalable, but they usually suffer from kT/C noise (Fig. 27.3.1 top, left). Using a continuous-time (CT) first stage, such as an instrumentation amplifier (IA) [1], [3], [4] (Fig. 27.3.1 top, right), or an active RC integrator [10], [11], can suppress the sampling noise of the following stages, however, they usually consume fixed static power, limiting their BW/power scalability.

Time-of-flight sensors deliver distance measurements through light propagation timing, facilitating object detection, gesture recognition, and three-dimensional mapping. These sensors maintain functionality across lighting conditions while ensuring response rates required for real-time applications. Based on these properties, combined with their cost and energy consumption parameters, we propose their exploitation in gesture recognition systems for human-robot interaction (HRI). This work presents two contributions: First, we introduce a dataset for gesture recognition tasks. Second, we develop a model for sequence classification optimized for resource constraints. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach through quantitative evaluation metrics. Finally, we present classification results on the dataset, analyze the model's performance on gesture categories, and discuss future challenges and directions in this field of research.

The purpose of this study is to create a LoRa-based smart farming management and surveillance system. Utilizing Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) in rural settings, with the aim of replacing the existing technology in agricultural monitoring systems. A dedicated private network server is established and connected to a gateway, which gathers information or signals from the nodes at the end and sends this data to the cloud without the need for routers. This data can then be utilized for various applications by the end users. The system overcomes issues related to communication failures and energy-efficient data transmission. This advanced farming platform enhances the effectiveness of farming methods. The proposed methodology is the application of resources including as water, fertilizers, and pesticides should be optimized in order to achieve maximum efficiency while simultaneously minimizing waste. Farming productivity and sustainability are both significantly improved because of its contribution, notably in terms of the efficient management of resources. And intelligent cities used to improve agriculture—comparing the planned weather station and the numerous developed patents. The technique here is like a cutting-edge, reasonably priced choice for local weather monitoring.

Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are fundamental to the development of advanced medical devices and diagnostic tools for biomedical applications and smart healthcare. They offer significant advantages in performance, power efficiency, and miniaturization, which are essential for meeting the stringent requirements of modern medical technologies. However, the adoption of ASICs is often hindered by challenges such as long design cycles, high development costs, and limited application scope. Traditionally, the design of ASICs for biomedical applications has been driven by the assumption that each application requires a unique, customized solution. While this may be true from a clinical perspective, a technological analysis reveals common requirements across different biomedical applications, such as signal acquisition, amplification, filtering, and data processing. This work proposes a shift toward a multimodal design strategy using Universal Multimodal Actuator sensor Chips (UMASCs). It presents an analysis of the design considerations for implementing UMASCs in biomedical contexts, exploring their potential to standardize hardware across clinically diverse techniques.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) find extensive applications in environmental monitoring, healthcare, and smart cities. Energy efficiency, however, continues to be a significant challenge with the limited lifetime of sensor node batteries. The conventional heuristic-based cluster head (CH) selection techniques tend not to adapt dynamically to network changes, resulting in inefficient energy utilization and decreased network lifetime. This research discusses Machine Learning (ML)-oriented CH selection approaches to improve energy efficiency, network lifetime, and data fusion. Using supervised and unsupervised learning methods, ML algorithms are able to learn optimal CHs dynamically based on residual energy, network structure, and data traffic. The comparative analysis show that ML-based CH selection enhances network stability by 95% and lowers energy consumption by 50% compared to traditional methods. The research points to the promise of ML in WSN performance optimization and opens the doors to intelligent, adaptive clustering technologies.

This paper presents a novel approach for air pollution monitoring using Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) with unique optical properties. Through Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations in COMSOL, the study explores how the PCF’s guiding characteristics are influenced by its geometric parameters at different wavelengths. The sensor, designed for enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and fast response, focuses on detecting air pollutants. A microstructured core in the PCF enhances light-matter interaction, improving sensor performance. The optimized PCF structure ensures effective light confinement, enabling precise detection of environmental changes like temperature and refractive index variations. The results have significant potential for telecommunications, biomedicine, and environmental monitoring applications, contributing to advanced air pollution control technologies.
