Civil engineering is considered complete with structural health monitoring SHM, a continuous process in which structures are tested for their health and integrity, ensuring they remain safe and reliable. Recent advancements in sensor technologies for SHM have improved the empirical side of structural performance. The advancement of sensor technologies for SHM is largely related to implementing wireless and smart sensors. It is easily fixable and provides real-time information on the strain, temperature, vibration, etc. Wireless and smart sensors can also be deployed in difficult-to-access or non-safe areas, allowing for an increased size of monitored structures. In addition, the emergence of sensor technologies has resulted in smart algorithms and data analytics methods suitable for SHM. Such algorithms process huge amounts of data and detect potential structural problems or anomalies before any expected maintenance intervention.

Health sensors are a valuable source of data for researchers investigating the body's varied activities. Human activity recognition systems have a special attachment to health sensors as their construction requires a focus on several steps such as pattern classification, feature extraction and selection, classifier design, and the learning *** research is primarily concerned with recognizing the various movements of the body's extremities in order to contribute to research on prosthetic control employing electromyography signals and the development of smart health systems. As a beginning stage, we decided to focus our research on detecting physical activity by utilizing data from two sensors with the intention of improving analysis and hypotheses associated with bionic applications and artificial intelligence solutions for health *** demonstrated this approach with a specific case study on the exploitation of the data generated by the accelerometer and gyroscope. This analysis was performed on seven human activities along with a new set of indicator parameters, statistical features, and five well-known machine-learning classifiers to evaluate the results. © 2022 IEEE.

Underwater Wireless sensor Networks (UWSNs) technology is strongly present in the research area, where many applications have been developed for monitoring of the underwater environments such as oil bases, pollution control, natural disasters, among others. Considering that the planet is covered by 70% of water, it is important to understand how to carry out communications in these environments, as a challenge by its limitations such as bandwidth, propagation speed, high delays, complex deployments, difficulty in energy recharge, among the most important. This study addresses an application development that allows simulating UWSNs in a controlled environment that considers attributes of the ISO/IEC 25010 standard that covers the quality of the software product. This will enable telecommunications students simulate, learn and understand about UWSN. It will be easier and simpler compared to more robust simulators such as OMNET, NS2 or NS3. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Review of antenna technologies for very high frequency Data Exchange Systems

The Automated Identification System (AIS) was originally developed as a terrestrial system tracking vessels near the coastline. Dedicated channels were allocated within the spectrum historically reserved for maritime applications in the very high frequency (VHF) band, enabling long range communications, up to a few kilometers. There have been various initiatives in the last decade that extended this system with a space segment, enabling global monitoring of vessels beyond the range of terrestrial stations. Recently, the World Radiocommunication conference has allocated frequencies for the extension of this system to a two-way VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) via satellite. This requires to adapt spaceborne antenna solutions previously developed for AIS, particularly for missions using small satellites and CubeSats. This paper provides a timely review of existing VHF antenna solutions and new concepts under development which could be applicable to VDES missions. Some key metrics are identified to provide a comparative study between various candidate solutions. Considering the range of possible missions, from secondary payloads on-board larger satellites to dedicated constellations, it is believed that a number of antenna products can find application in future VDES space-based infrastructure.

Joint Communication and Sensing (JCS) emerges as a crucial technology composed to revolutionize forthcoming wireless systems. Acknowledged as both a vital technology and a pivotal usage scenario for the anticipated 6th generation (6G) wireless networks, JCS takes advantages of the communication signals to detect and as well monitor the surrounding environment, facilitating sensing, target detection, and localization. However, current JCS technologies meet various challenges demanding comprehensive solutions. These challenges include standardization, privacy, security, interference, energy efficiency, complexity and cost. Advancements in technologies supporting JCS facilitate the seamless integration of sensing and communication capabilities. Key technologies contributing to JCS include visible light communication, millimeter-wave communication, radar systems, sensor fusion and machine learning. This manuscript discusses the fundamental elements of JCS, various approaches, current challenges and prospects for future contributions with particular focus on Radio Frequency RF-JCS, as well as the widely adopted innovative approach based on Visible Light technologies VL-JCS, which promises to contribute significantly to the future of JCS research.

The industrial Internet-of-things (IIoT) paradigm is reshaping the way industrial measurement systems are designed. Industrial systems require collecting accurate and timely measurements from the field using smart sensor networks distributed in wide production areas. In this context, wireless connectivity of sensors acquires undeniable importance, and in turn, opens significant research challenges. Therefore, the research community is actively analyzing the suitability of different wireless technologies, for instance, Wi-Fi, 5G-and-beyond, and low-power wide area networks (LPWANs), toward their possible industrial applications and optimizing them to realize high-performance and accurate smart measurement systems. In this paper, we focus on long range (LoRa)-based LPWANs (i.e., LoRaWAN), especially to overcome the duty cycle (DC) limitations of the adopted ALOHA-based medium access control (MAC) strategy in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. The ISM bands are subjected to an hourly constraint on the number of packet transmissions or inter-message delay, where the devices using higher spreading factors (SFs) can quickly consume the available transmission time. In this paper, we propose and assess the hybrid MAC designs in a LoRa network by combining carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) with ALOHA in two different ways i) exploiting different channel plans for the access mechanisms, ii) relay-assisted access, with devices using small SFs assisting neighboring higher-SF devices with listen-before-talk (LBT) mechanism. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed access strategies lead to a higher packet delivery rate (PDR) as well as lower mean and standard deviation of the communication delay;thus, increasing the overall measurement accuracy.

Enhancing spatial awareness for the visually impaired is crucial for autonomy and mobility. Our research addresses this by proposing a novel approach to sensor data synchronization for assistive technologies, re-framing the challenge as a forecasting task suitable for machine learning solutions. We developed a hard hat assembly equipped with 2D LiDAR, dual 1D LiDARs, and a depth camera to create comprehensive spatial awareness for navigation. By applying various machine learning algorithms to predict 2D LiDAR readings from higher frequency 1D LiDAR data, we aimed to overcome conventional synchronization limitations. Our investigation revealed that while linear models and some non-linear approaches were inadequate, the Generalized Auto-regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model showed promise in capturing short-term volatility. Our findings contribute to assistive technologies by introducing a machine learning paradigm for sensor synchronization, potentially improving spatial awareness systems’ accuracy and reliability. This system has the potential to significantly enhance navigation for the visually impaired, fostering greater independence and safety.

To capture real-time data from Wireless sensor Network applications, utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is becoming popular for minimizing end-to-end latency and reducing packet loss issues with extended network lifetime. Existing works in the literature are either limited by using a static sink or ground vehicle-supported mobile slink. In this paper, we introduce Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as mobile sinks moving around multiple circular ring canals on the basic starfish routing backbone (bSFR). We also develop generalized mathematical equations for determining an optimal number of ring canals required for a terrain with certain width and length along with their radii. The results of experiments carried out in Network Simulator version 2 (NS2) depict that the proposed routing model significantly improves the performances in terms of end-to-end latency and network lifetime. © 2022 IEEE.

With the development of edge technology in the fields of transportation, wireless sensor networks, and the internet of things, more and more intelligent optimization algorithms are implemented in hardware structures. The Rafflesia optimization algorithm (ROA) is a novel intelligent optimization algorithm proposed recently. To observe its performance on hardware, this paper implements the ROA algorithm in a cooperative way of software and hardware, referred to as the FROA algorithm. To convenient testing and accelerated computing, the initialization module, fitness module, and update module of the FROA algorithm are deployed on the advanced RISC machine (ARM) platform and the field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform, respectively. In the experimental part, we test the FROA algorithm on nine different benchmark functions. The results are compared with those implemented in software. The brain is the most complex organ in the human body, and it is also the most complex organ in the whole biological system, making it the most complex organ on the planet. According to the findings of current studies, modern study that properly characterises the EEG data signal provides a clear classification accuracy of human activities that is distinct from previous research. Various brain wave patterns related with common activities such as sleeping, reading, and watching a movie may be found in the Electroencephalography (EEG) data that has been collected. In response to these activities, we accumulate various sorts of emotion signals in our brain, such as the Delta, Theta, and Alpha bands, which will provide different types of emotion signals in our brain as a consequence of our actions. When dealing with EEG recordings that are non-stationary in nature, time-frequency domain techniques, on the other hand, are more likely to provide good results. The ability to detect diverse neural rhythm scales using time-frequency representation has also been shown to be a legitimate EEG marker;this ability has also been demonstrated to be a powerful tool for investigating small-scale neural brain oscillations. On the basis of several parameters such as filtering response, precision, recall, and F-measure, as well as accuracy and precision, the Matlab simulation software was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. © 2022 IEEE.
