Color distortion can introduce a significant damage in visual quality perception, however, most of existing reduced-reference quality measures are designed for gray scale images. In this paper, we consider a basic extension of well-known image-statistics based quality assessment measures to color images. In order to evaluate the impact of color information on the measures efficiency, two color spaces are investigated: RGB and CIELAB. Results of an extensive evaluation using TID 2013 benchmark demonstrates that significant improvement can be achieved for a great number of distortion type when the CIELAB color representation is used.

Because of false detection rate, many fire detection algorithm cannot easily become a part of alarm monitoring system, so in this paper, we proposed to detect fire precisely with color variation in temporal domain to reduce false detection rate. By capturing special characteristic of fire in temporal domain, we can get reliable experimental result tested by 24 video sequences. With our algorithm, we can detect fire in more than 90% of cases tested by fire and non-fire 24 sequences, and also makes false detection less than 10%. And most of false detection are shown in unusual videos that have fire becoming extinguished and dancing people with moving camera.

Over the past few decades, many applications have been developed for quantify the performance of image segmentation algorithms. However, applying standard interactive segmentation software for large image datasets would be an extremely laborious and a time-consuming task. In this chapter, we present an online evaluation framework for analysis and visualization features via internet communication that serves as a remote system. One of the features of the online evaluation system is the combination of MATLAB and Java to provide benefit platform that create the application with advanced mathematical computation as well as a well-designed graphical interface. This framework provides a web-based tool for validating the efficiency of segmentation algorithms. Experimental results show the possible ways in order to transfer MATLAB algorithm into a MATLAB license-free that make algorithm developed within MATLAB run all cross the platform and available on internet. In addition, the implementation methodology reported can be reused for other similar software engineering tasks.

The objective of this paper lies on the characterization of osteoporosis disease using fractal analysis of X-Ray images. The method consists of a pre-processing step followed by a feature extraction based on the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) model. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used as a classifier to distinguish between two populations composed of Osteoporotic Patients (OP) and Control Cases (CC). Our proposed method achieved an accuracy classification rate of 95%, which means that it offers a good discrimination between OP patients and CC subjects.

In this contribution we show that two basic assumptions on the covariance matrices of color images are enough to explain the appearance of spatiochromatic features given by Fourier descriptors in the luminance plus color opponent channels. The first of these assumptions is second order stationarity while the second one is commutativity between color correlation matrices. The validity of these assumptions are experimentally studied on two large image databases. As a lateral result of this study, we also provide novel data to support an exponential decay law of the spatiochromatic covariance between pairs of pixels as a function of their spatial distance instead of the commonly assumed power-law behavior.

An improved SPIHT algorithm that combines the SPIHT and the sub bands threshold calculation to reduce the number of comparison operations, without sacrificing the reconstructed image quality, is proposed. After applying discrete wavelet transform to the image, the threshold of each independent sub band is calculated. The scanning of the sets inside a sub band is determined by the magnitude of the thresholds that establish a hierarchical scanning not only for the set of coefficients with large magnitude, but also, for the sub bands. The proposed algorithm uses the set partitioning technique to sort the transformed coefficients. Results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the number of comparison operations in the sorting passes while maintaining the visual quality and PSNR of the recovered image.

In this paper, we explore the use of advanced statistical models for unsupervised segmentation of challenging eye images. A previous work has shown the superiority of Triplet Markov Field (TMF) over HMF for segmenting challenging eye region but TMF implementation is computationally very expensive. To enable faster processing while preserving performance, we investigate in this paper Hidden Markov Chain (HMC) and Pair wise Markov Chain (PMC). We developed novel adequate image scanning procedures and initialization steps for implementing these models and extensive experiments on challenging images of the ICE2005 database show that the use of HMC with the snail scan and Histogram Initialization enhances the quality of segmentation comparing to OSIRIS-V4 based on contour approach or TMF model.

In this paper we present a method to segment retinal vessels based on the use of the watershed transform and of the contrast map and the directional map built for the retina image. Pixels belonging to a single region of the watershed transform are assigned a unique gray-level and a unique direction. Each region of the watershed transform is also assigned a unique contrast value, computed as the maximum difference in gray-level with respect to its adjacent regions. Regions with positive value in the contrast map are interpreted as non vessel regions, while for the remaining regions directional information is used to identify the retinal vessels. The algorithm has been tested on the DRIVE database producing in general satisfactory results.
