Medical services have a great importance in international development. Hospitals have been forced to reinforce their health services and technological infrastructure developments because of the rapid development of information technology. Liver segmentation is a difficult task because of its variable shape it can be thought as a large footprint. In addition, the nearness of its color and texture to surrounding organs tissues makes its boundaries unclear. In this study, computed tomography images have been used to segment the liver that was the first part of the lesion liver detection. Obtained liver segmentation result achievements have been compared with the manual segmentation of the radiologists. Segmentation accuracies have been assessed by using Zijdenbos similarity index. The applied methodology achieved approximately 93% segmentation accuracy. After liver segmentation stage, this segmentation procedure is located on mobile environment that medical experts can access the software with their mobile devices. This is the first part of the ongoing decision support system study that can be used to define diagnostic lesions on the liver via android-based mobile devices.

In this paper, a novel image feature extraction algorithm, entitled Feature Line-based Local Discriminant Analysis (FLLDA), is proposed. FLLDA is a subspace learning algorithm based on Feature Line (FL) metric. FL metric is used for the evaluation of the local withinclass scatter and local between class scatter in the proposed FLLDA approach. The Experimental results on COIL20 image database confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. © 2014 Springer international Publishing Switzerland. All rights reserved.

'Water' is one of the most valuable resources available to the mankind. In the world, due to exponential growth in population and industrialization we are witnessing scarcity of water. In addition, water table levels are falling rapidly than ever. Hence proper management and appropriate utilization of water has become the need of an hour. Hence this problem is required to be tackled with the novel approach. The idea behind this proposal is to design and development of rain water harvesting system based on rainfall runoff estimation over rooftop. The Google Earth image is combination of remote sensed satellite images and aerial photographs. The information on land use and land cover is obtained using satellites Google Earth images which are simple, economical and precise approach. In the proposed work an efficient classification technique is proposed in which K-means clustering algorithm and textural parameters based on GLCM are used for classification of the Google Earth images into land cover and land use sector. In Land use and land cover classification whole image gets classified into different region such as Grass area, Water area, Roof-top area, Soil area etc. Then area under the different regions is computed. Area measurement is required for computing rainfall runoff using estimation model. Experimental result shows that the computation of the areas of roof tops and road surfaces are nearly accurate and rainfall runoff calculation can be estimated very near to actual. © 2014 IEEE.

Treating imprecise and uncertain data requires an adequate formalism allowing a fit modelization. Several formalisms can be identified such as Bayesian theory, fuzzy set theory and belief function theory. The belief function theory provides an adequate formalism to manipulate those imperfect data. It also allows source fusion thanks to the combination operators that it integrates. The fusion process generates an empty set mass denoted conflict that illustrates the contradiction rate between considered sources. In this work, we tackle the classification of a forest high-resolution remote-sensing image problem. In order to classify this image, we handled imperfect information with the belief function theory. We propose a method for classification based on belief function theory and source fusion. The introduced Redistributing Conflict Classification Approach (RCCA) analyzes the conflict resulting from the fusion and redistributes it to the most pertinent classes. An experimental comparison to well known literature classifiers is provided.

We analyzed the industry sector-specific international trade data from 1995 to 2011 to clarify the structure and dynamics of communities that consist of industry sectors in various countries linked by international trade. We applied conventional community analysis to each time slice of the international trade network, and then identified the links between communities in adjoining years by using the World Input-Output Database. This database contains the industry sector specific international trade data on 41 countries and 35 industry sectors. The identified link structure shows that a triple backbone structure exists in the international trade network. We used the Hilbert transform to evaluate the phase time series of the growth rate of value added for 1435 nodes and then estimated the complex order parameters for communities. The respective amplitude for the order parameter of each community was observed to be greater than the amplitude for all sectors. This means active trade produces higher phase coherence within each community. Phase coherence decreased gradually in the late 1990's but increased sharply in 2001 and 2002.

High-quality algorithms for dense optical flow computation are computationally intensive. To compute them with high speed and low power is vital to make optical flow computation applicable in real-world applications. In contrast to only the Horn-Schunck model being studied on FPGA-based systems today, one of the best linear variational methods for dense optical flow computation, Combine-Brightness-Gradient, is implemented on FPGA-accelerated heterogeneous platforms in this paper. C instead of HDLs is employed and optimizing techniques based on the algorithmic parallelism and hardware architecture are introduced. Experimental results show that 30-110x improvement of the computing efficiency over CPUs was achieved. The FPGA-accelerated version is able to process 640 x 480 image at 1 2 fps with 0.38 J per frame, while it is 0 : 8 fps and around 4 0 J on CPUs. Through demonstrating high performance and low power of dense optical flow algorithm on FPGA-based heterogeneous platforms implemented in C, this paper shows that the off-the-shelf commodity FPGAs coupled with High-Level-Synthesis (HLS) tools could provide an available option when computational efficiency together with development speed are required.

The Canny algorithm has been extensively adopted to perform edge detection in images. The Derivative of Gaussian (DoG) proposed by Canny has been shown to be the optimal edge detector to compute the image gradient due to its robustness to noise. However, the DoG has some important drawbacks in relation to images with thin edges of a few pixels width and junctions. The excessive blurring provided by the DoG affects the detection of the double and triple junctions that sometimes appear broken while the corners appear rounded. Such a loss in detail is due to the second order approximation of the finite difference (FD) operator adopted to discretize the DoG detector. In this work an improvement of the Canny algorithm is proposed for images having thin edges, computing the edge detector as a convolution of a fourth order accurate FD with the smoothed Gaussian image. The modified wave number analysis of the FD formulation is adopted to motivate the improvement in the edge resolution gained by the fourth order FD discretization. Quantitative comparisons performed with a second order FD discretization of the edge detector adopting both synthetic and benchmark images highlight an improvement in edge localization and in junction detection.

Recently, the Voice Activity Detection (VAD) algorithms based on machine learning techniques have shown impressive results in the area of speech recognition. In this paper, we present a case study and we discuss the performance of VAD based on Support Vector Machines (SVM) for Distributed Speech Recognition (DSR) system. In this case study, the speech and the non-speech frames are detected from the compressed Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), at the back-end (e.g. Server) side, with the aim of improving the VAD performance and reducing the compression bit-rate from the front-end side. By using the trained SVM with polynomial kernel, the SVM-based VAD can produce encouraging detection results. The classification task conducted from the Aurora-2 speech database with different noise conditions shows comparable VAD performance, with respect to ETSI Advanced Front-End (ETSI-AFE) standard.

Recent technological advancement in Mobile Computing and the development of the internet has served to foster on-going innovation in Speech and Language Therapy (SLT). This realisation has wrought a plethora of diverse systems designed to assist with the evolution of traditional models and approaches in a variety of fields. In the field of SLT, systems are desired to complement the structured therapy session, in order to aid the Speech and language Professional (SLP). More recently, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of applications that appear keen to affect a move towards more individual, mobile, personalised learning motivated by the evolving social and computing paradigms of the age. It is therefore this research has identified the areas of the existing paper based SLT system that have the potential to be improved upon through use of computing technology. These areas were factored into a design for an improved prototype system;while attempting to leverage research in the area of Applied Computing in Human Biology as demonstrated by the work of Leitner in order to create a novel system with which to augment the SLT process. The proposed prototype system was evaluated and tested in order prove the efficacy of a computerised system used in this context.

The expansion of the internet in the past years has rapidly enlarged the accessibility of digital data like digital audio, images and videos to the common community of people. The rapid development in information technologies has given an extended and easy access to digital data. Digital data is a major trend of business communication today. Therefore, copyright protection of digital data has been a significant research issue of information security. Digital watermarking is one of the proposed solutions for copyright protection of multimedia and it is becoming a major player not only for use in images but also in the latest technology such as audio, image and video. It also has applications in defense, certification of business documents, distribution, anti-forgery of the digital media. It is an important area of study in information hiding and retrieval. The secrecy of the image may be adjusted using the level indicator (LI) introduced in this paper. Comparison of different watermarking techniques for various LI values is accomplished in this paper to test robustness.
