The paper presents a novel bone-conduction based brain-computer interface paradigm. Four subthreshold acoustic frequency stimulus patterns are presented to the subjects in an oddball paradigm allowing for "aharesponses" generation to the attended targets. This allows for successful implementation of the bone-conduction based brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm. The concept is confirmed with seven subjects in online bone-conducted auditory Morse-code patterns spelling BCI paradigm. We report also brain electrophysiological signal processing and classification steps taken to achieve the successful BCI paradigm. We also present a finding of the response latency variability in a function of stimulus difficulty.

We propose an efficient framework for combining pixel and object-based approaches for Remote Sensing image Classification using Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence (DSTE). The pixel-based technique employs the multispectral information for assigning a pixel to a class according to the spectral similarities between the classes, and the object-based technique operates on objects consisting of many homogeneous pixels grouped together in a meaningful way through image segmentation. In order to manage the conflict that results from using both approaches, the final decision is performed using DSTE's rule combination based on probabilistic output from both SVM classifiers. The evaluation test conducted on ETM+ image of Landsat-7 shows that the proposed technique achieved 95.24% classification accuracy. This performance is 5.78% higher than the better accuracy obtained by both SVMs. The proposed combination framework outperforms traditional methods by 2.14% accuracy's margin.

The exponential growths in electronic data over internet have increase the demand of a robust and high quality watermarking method for authentication and copyright protection. The available digital image watermarking methods generally use the correlated color spaces which impose the limitations to researchers for using only one color component at a time for embedding the watermark. Therefore, in this paper, a novel DWT based digital image watermarking method has been proposed which embeds the gray scale watermark into color host image using uncorrelated color space (UCS) and genetic algorithm (GA) method. The result shows that the proposed method outperforms other existing methods against the various signal processing attacks. The proposed method is a first inline report which uses uncorrelated color space for digital image watermarking.

Due to the high speed of internet and advances in technology, people are becoming more worried about information being hacked by attackers. Recently, many algorithms of steganography and data hiding have been proposed. Steganography is a process of embedding the secret information inside the host medium (text, audio, image and video). Concurrently, many of the powerful steganographic analysis software programs have been provided to unauthorized users to retrieve the valuable secret information that was embedded in the carrier files. Some steganography algorithms can be easily detected by steganalytical detectors because of the lack of security and embedding efficiency. In this paper, we propose a secure video steganography algorithm based on the principle of linear block code. Nine uncompressed video sequences are used as cover data and a binary image logo as a secret message. The pixels' positions of both cover videos and a secret message are randomly reordered by using a private key to improve the system's security. Then the secret message is encoded by applying Hamming code (7, 4) before the embedding process to make the message even more secure. The result of the encoded message will be added to random generated values by using XOR function. After these steps that make the message secure enough, it will be ready to be embedded into the cover video frames. In addition, the embedding area in each frame is randomly selected and it will be different from other frames to improve the steganography scheme's robustness. Furthermore, the algorithm has high embedding efficiency as demonstrated by the experimental results that we have obtained. Regarding the system's quality, the Pick signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) of stego videos are above 51 dB, which is close to the original video quality. The embedding payload is also acceptable, where in each video frame we can embed 16 Kbits and it can go up to 90 Kbits without noticeable degrading of the stego video's quality.

In this paper, we propose a new switching median filter with signal dependent thresholds designed by a genetic algorithm (GA). The switching median filter detects noise-corrupted pixels based on a threshold. Then it restores only the detected pixels. The present switching median filter deals with the random-valued impulse noises, whose distribution is ideally assumed as a uniform distribution. In the present method, the switching median filter, which has two kinds of the thresholds, is introduced. One is switching thresholds to detect the noise, and the other is selecting thresholds to choose the suitable switching threshold. As the suitable selecting threshold, a variance of signals is used. Then all of the switching and selecting thresholds of the proposed switching median filter are automatically optimized by using GA. To optimize the thresholds with GA, distribution distance between the assumed and the detected noises is employed as a fitness function. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by some experiments.

In this paper, we studied the impact of the mismatch existing between training and testing data due to the presence of an additive noise on the performance of speaker verification system. Using a GMM-UBM system with MAP adaptation as a baseline system, front-end diversity is achieved by using MFCCs and different asymmetric MFCCs stand-alone as features or followed by PCA and LDA as dimensionality reduction techniques applied before the GMM-UBM back-end classifier. A score level fusion framework based on logistic regression is proposed to improve performance and to mitigate noise degradation. The obtained results on both clean and corrupted TIMIT database confirm the superiority of fused system in clean and noisy environment against each system alone, and the drastic degradation of the performances of PCA and LDA based systems in the presence of environmental noise.

Induction is the term used to describe the fact that visual perception depends not only on the absolute luminance of a patch in a visual scene, but also on the luminance of the surrounding patches. Induction can be achromatic or chromatic, depending on the presence of only shades of gray, or color, respectively. Achromatic induction can be measured through quite simple psychophysical matching experiments, whose data are well fitted by the so-called edge integration models. In this paper we will examine Rudd-Zemach's edge integration model and we will show that it can be interpreted in terms of a variational framework that shares many features with a phenomenologically-based visual perception theory recently proposed. The relevance of this result is twofold: firstly, it allows interpreting induction in terms of local contrast enhancement, secondly, it provides a validation of the variational framework in terms of quantitative measures, opening the possibility to determine important parameters of this framework.

The first texture descriptors are proposed in 1973 by Haralick[1] and in 1975 by Marie Galloway[2] are still used today for image classification or segmentation in various domains. The majority of these features are defined for gray level images. Many papers have proposed different approaches among them, a parallel study of color and gray level texture characterization when other combined the two groups of features by defining joint features[3][4][5]. Combining features or defining them jointly are outperformed [6] even though these features impose some constraints such as the color system, measurement similarity methods. The aim of this paper is to use Clifford Algebra to represent multi-component images and to propose a color image texture.

This paper proposes a robust image hashing technique based on the sign of coefficients in the Discrete Cosine Transforms (DCT) domain. The idea consists of exploiting the energy compaction property of the DCT and its ability to carry information of edges and texture in DCT sign values. It has been shown that the DCT sign-based hashing technique offers an excellent robustness against signal processing operations and geometric attacks and outperforms the conventional DCT-based image hashing technique.

The use of (online) signatures for the purpose of verifying a subject's identity is highly accepted within society and perceived as a noninvasive and nonthreatening biometric characteristic by most users. However, signature biometrics is typically characterized by a high intra-class variability, being influenced by several physical and emotional conditions, i.e. identity verification based on online signature biometrics represents an extremely challenging task. Online signature verification systems mainly utilize time-discrete signal processing techniques for biometric signature authorship verification. The vast majority of state-of-the-art approaches to online signature verification construct subject-specific probabilistic models during feature extraction, e.g. Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs). Focusing on the construction of these models feature normalization turns out to be vital in order to achieve robustness against noise. In this work we propose the very first application of a feature normalization technique, referred to as Feature Warping (FW), which is well-established within the speaker recognition community, to a GMM-based online signature verification system. Experimental evaluations, which are carried out on the MCYT signature corpus, demonstrate that the presented adaptation of FW significantly improves the biometric performance of the underlying online signature verification system, achieving relative gains of approximately 47% in terms of equal error rates.
