Finger touch is the most natural way for human interaction with the external world. In the past five years, the great success of multi-touch trackpad on portable devices implies the big potential of multi-touch technology to be applied in vision-based human-computer interaction (HCI) systems. The implementation of multi-touch technology highly depends on accurate and fast fingertip tracking. In this paper we present a fast and robust algorithm for tracking fingertip positions in a stereovision-based 3D multi-touch interaction system. Our method first detects the hand region by a two-step strategy based on skin color filter as well as depth images. Then a geometry model is built to locate the fingertips. The accuracy and effectiveness of the fingertip tracking algorithm is examined over several video sequences with complicated backgrounds. Experimental results verify that our algorithm can reliably and accurately track the movements of fingertips in real time. The effectiveness of the fingertip tracking algorithm also reveals the capability allowing user to interact with computers through their finger movements in 3D space over a virtual thin-film-like touch surface which is set up at a certain distance away from the screen.

A great number of Artificial Intelligence applications are based on features extracted from signals or images. Feature extraction often requires differentiation of discrete signals and/or images in one or more dimensions. In this work we provide two Theorems for the construction of finite length (finite impulse response -FIR) masks for signal and image differentiation of any order, using central differences of any required length. Moreover, we present a very efficient algorithm for implementing the compact (implicit) differentiation of discrete signals and images, as infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. The differentiator operators are assessed in terms of their spectral properties, as well as in terms of the performance of corner detection in gray scale images, achieving higher sensitivity than standard operators. These features are considered very important for computer vision systems. The computational complexity for the centered and the explicit derivatives is also provided.

This paper presents a new framework and feature set for vehicle model query system. By giving model names or manufacturer names as keywords, the desired vehicle images can be queried from target videos or vehicle image databases using internet-vision approach. In this framework, sample images are automatically retrieved from internet via search engine or car related website. Logos and frontal masks are segmented and are used for recognizing the manufacturer name and model of the vehicles, respectively. Eigenfaces and Pyramid Histogram of Oriented Gradients (PHOG) are proposed as features for recognition process. The experiments show that the proposed method can provide recognition rate of 98.2 % for manufacturer logo recognition process, and 94.00% for vehicle model recognition process. The performance of the entire framework of our proposed query system is also evaluated via precision and recall which are obtained as 87.67% and 80.00%, respectively.

In this paper, we propose a novel clustering algorithm based on Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) and Speeded-Up Robust Feature (SURF) for multispectral image segmentation. In the experiments, color images and multispectral images from IRIS Lab data base, which consists of face images taken along the visible spectrum, have been used to illustrate the performances of the proposed algorithm and to compare its outputs with other algorithms. Results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other clustering methods in segmenting color images as well as multispectral images.

The presented study explores the extent to which tactile-force stimulus delivered to a hand holding a force-feedback joystick can serve as a platform for a brain-computer interface (BCI). The four pressure directions are used to evoke tactile brain potential responses, thus defining a tactile-force brain computer interface (tfBCI). We present brain signal processing and classification procedures leading to successful online interfacing results. Experimental results with seven subjects performing online BCI experiments provide a validation of the hand location tfBCI paradigm, while the feasibility of the concept is illuminated through remarkable information-transfer rates.

Induction is the term used to describe the fact that visual perception depends not only on the absolute luminance of a patch in a visual scene, but also on the luminance of the surrounding patches. Induction can be achromatic or chromatic, depending on the presence of only shades of gray, or color, respectively. Achromatic induction can be measured through quite simple psychophysical matching experiments, whose data are well fitted by the so-called edge integration models. In this paper we will examine Rudd-Zemach's edge integration model and we will show that it can be interpreted in terms of a variational framework that shares many features with a phenomenologically-based visual perception theory recently proposed. The relevance of this result is twofold: firstly, it allows interpreting induction in terms of local contrast enhancement, secondly, it provides a validation of the variational framework in terms of quantitative measures, opening the possibility to determine important parameters of this framework.

The objective of reconstruction-based super-resolution is to construct a high-resolution image from a sequence of low-resolution images. The super-resolution processing requires precise registration of low-resolution images and the registration error degrades the resulting high-resolution image. In order to handle inaccuracies in registration, the robust super-resolution methods have been proposed. We propose an adaptive pixel weighting method which uses pixel weighting variables for the input pixels. The proposed method is the extension of the conventional pixel selection type robust super-resolution. We define the cost function which includes the regularization term for the weighting variables and the cost function is minimized against the weighting variables and the resulting HR image simultaneously. We confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method with super-resolved free-viewpoint image synthesis.

Filtering out speckle noise is essential in many imaging applications. Speckle noise creates a grainy appearance that leads to the masking of diagnostically significant image features and consequent reduction in the accuracy of segmentation and pattern recognition algorithms. For low contrast images, speckle noise is multiplicative in nature. The approach suggested in this paper makes use of fourth order complex diffusion technique to perform homomorphic filtering for speckle noise reduction. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluation is carried out for different noise variances and found that the proposed approach out performs the existing methods in terms of root means square error (RMSE) value and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR).
