With Artificial Intelligence applications becoming ubiquitous, both industrial and consumer applications require more computing availability. The increasing need for power-constrained Artificial Intelligence computing asks for new and innovative solutions, on both hardware design as well as on software toolchains that leverage them. At the same time, the challenge of EU technological sovereignty encourages an industry trend oriented to developing its own solutions for power efficient High Performance Computing (HPC). In this context, as partners in the ISOLDE project started in 2023, we propose the development of new power efficient embedded HPC accelerators, HPC design platforms, as well as High Level Synthesis (HLS) approaches and toolchain technology designs for RISC-V based applications. Specifically, we envisage applications such as Fast Fourier Transform, Number Theoretic Transforms, Post Quantum Computing and artificial intelligence, as well as designing ONNX targeted toolchains based on the LLVM compiler, open solutions for Neural Networks (NN) accelerators and new OpenMP extensions. Within the ISOLDE framework, the envisaged applications to prove the readiness of these technologies are the Automotive and the Smart Home demonstrators.

The accumulation of dust particles on the solar panels decrease the total amount of solar energy received by the Photovoltaic panel (PV) and, it has also been proven that the increase of temperature reduces the overall efficiency. These effects have been studied by different researchers based on collected data comparison. As both of these parameters have a negative effect on the efficiency of the solar panel, it is essential to keep them clean and at low temperatures. The use of technologies, such as robots, is an effective way of carrying out repetitive tasks at low cost and in a short time. This work consists of developing a robot capable of cleaning and cooling the solar panels, based on images acquired through a camera positioned directly towards the panels, thus maintaining periodic cleaning in order to increase its efficiency. The preliminary results demonstrate the possibility of using this approach for the accomplishment of this task.

The evolving energy landscape demands reliable integration of renewable resources to ensure security, sustainability, and reduced carbon emissions. Then, a high level of understanding about the behavior of the renewable energy sources, the technologies, and their interaction is needed. Particularly, parabolic trough collector (PTC) solar plants can positively affect power systems due to their dispatchability. Since PTC harvests direct normal irradiance (DNI), complex dynamic models are required to understand how PTC behaves. This work uses a 1-D dynamic model that captures the dynamic behavior of PTC plants and is solved numerically via a three-point backward finite-difference. Through two case studies, this research highlights the dynamic behavior and performance of the PTC rows and total solar fields. The row response to varying DNI is showcased in the first case study. The model predicts heat transfer fluid (HTF) temperature profiles in 0.7 s, paving the way for effective control strategies to prevent overheating. The second case study extends the analysis to disturbances caused by clouds and shadows, reaffirming the model's robustness. With a computation time of 2.7 s for temperature profiles over a day, the model offers both accuracy and computational efficiency for real-time applications.

Producing independent simulation units that can be used in a Functional Mock-Up Interface (FMI) setting is challenging. In some cases, a modelling tool may be available that provides the exact capabilities needed by exporting such units. However, there may be cases where existing tools are not suitable, or the cost is prohibitive, thus it may be necessary to implement a Functional Mock-up Unit (FMU) from scratch. Correctly implementing an FMU from scratch requires a deep technical understanding of the FMI specification and the technologies it is built upon. A consequence of FMI being a C-based standard is that an FMU must, generally, be implemented in C or a compiled language that offers a binary-compatible with C such as C++, Rust, or Fortran. In this paper we present UniFMU, a tool that makes it possible to implement FMUs in any language, by writing an adapter that can be plugged in to our modular approach. UniFMU also provides both a graphical user interface and command-line interface feature for generating new FMUs from a selection of programming languages. We expect our tool and approach to be useful for the simulation community both when porting simulators written in languages without FMI support, and when implementing or re-implementing such support.

Future conflicts involving Joint All-Domain Operations (JADO) will require an unprecedented scale of standoff targeting against hardened, mobile, and dynamic targets that will only be possible through effective use of sensing, command and control (C2), and targeting assets across multi-domain (space/air/ground/sea) kill chains. technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy are critical to enabling effective, scalable, and timely kill chains, but only if applied appropriately to address kill chain limitations, informed by quantitative system of systems modeling and simulation at the data level. To address these challenges, BAE Systems is developing a Virtual System of Systems Testbed to enable detailed quantitative mission level analysis of kill chain performance in a variety of multi-domain scenarios, combining high fidelity platform and sensor simulation with detailed modeling of information flows through the kill chain. The Testbed uses Bohemia Interactive simulation's Virtual Battlespace 4 (VBS4) to model virtual physical entities, and uses the VBS4 simulation SDK to pass dynamic scenario data messages for real-time processing by advanced algorithm plug-ins including AI-based information dissemination and Autonomous mission management. In this paper, we will describe the challenges posed by JADO and the critical importance of system of system analysis to inform the application of advanced algorithmic technologies. We discuss the rationale and architecture of the Virtual System of Systems testbed, the technologies incorporated, and the methodologies for system of systems analysis. We will present results assessing system of systems contribution of these technologies to improving mission-level metrics such as latency, scalability, and robustness of kill chain response.

This paper presents a comprehensive study on the speed control of a Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) utilizing a hybrid energy system comprising solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, batteries, and supercapacitors. The integration of renewable energy sources with energy storage technologies has gained significant attention due to their potential to enhance system efficiency and reduce dependency on conventional energy sources. The proposed system aims to achieve efficient speed control of SRM while ensuring reliable and sustainable operation. The hybrid system architecture combines the intermittent nature of solar PV generation with the energy storage capabilities of batteries and supercapacitors to mitigate fluctuations in power supply and meet the varying energy demands of the SRM. A control strategy is developed to effectively manage the power flow between the different energy sources and the motor drive, considering factors such as solar irradiance levels, battery state of charge, and load requirements. simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed system under different operating conditions. This research provides valuable insights into the integration of renewable energy sources and energy storage technologies for improving the performance of SRM-based systems, with potential applications in various industrial and automotive sectors. © 2024 IEEE.

In production plants organized by the job shop principle, the factory-wide scheduling problem is NP-hard and can become extremely large. Traditional optimization methods like linear optimization reach their limits in these settings due to excessive computation time. Therefore, we propose this industrial setting as a novel field of application for swarm intelligence using bottom-up algorithms that do not require the infeasible calculation of an overall solution but depend only on local information. We consider the example of the semiconductor industry producing logic and power integrated circuits where a diverse range of highly specialized but low volume products are fabricated in the same plant. This paper shows how to select and model swarm members, swarms, and their interactions for use in real-world production plants. There are multiple possibilities for the modeling of the agents: a swarm member could be a single machine or a set of machines (workcenter), a product or group of products of the same/similar type, or a more abstract agent like a process. In particular, we consider criteria for selecting appropriate swarm members and potential candidate swarm algorithms inspired by hormones and ants.

Reliable channel modeling is critically important terahertz (THz) wireless communication applications. Considering the complexity of practical THz non-line-of-sight links, this paper presents a joint multipath-shadow-weather fading channel modeling approach, which investigates the influences of various weather conditions as well as multipath and shadow fading by utilizing the overall least squares method for stochastic processes. simulation results have shown that the proposed modeling method can well describe the THz wireless channel in presence of multipath and shadow fading under sunny, rain, snow and fog weathers. © 2023 IEEE.

In this research work, a hexagonal shape microstrip patch antenna has been introduced to work for two 5G frequency bands, n78 (3300–3800 MHz) and n77 (3300–4200 MHz) for radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting applications. The resonant frequency for the 5G n78 and 5G n77 bands is 3.55 GHz and 3.75 GHz, respectively. To improve the characteristics of the antenna at the anticipated resonant frequency, a hexagonal shape slot is embedded in the ground plane. A working bandwidth of 2.0 GHz (2.80–4.88 GHz) cantered at 3.7 GHz (5G n77), is achieved. The proposed antenna exhibits a bidirectional radiation pattern with a peak gain of 3.74 dBi at 3.7 GHz. The height of the FR4 substrate is set constant at 1.6 mm. A comparative study has been performed on different substrate materials to know the effect of dielectric properties on the proposed hexagonal-shaped microstrip patch antenna (HSMPA). © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
