In this paper, state feedback control design for tracking control of a flexible link manipulator is considered. The computation of state feedback control gains is conventionally handled by pole placement method or LQR method via Riccati equation. Unfortunately, they still possess trial-and-error approach in choosing their parameters. Particularly, choosing elements of Q and R matrices in the state feedback control design using LQR method has to be done by trial. Therefore, an intelligent method to resolve this problem is proposed by adopting PSO-based optimization. Experimental work is carried out to evaluate effectiveness of the proposed method.

Identifying walking gait events is important in gait analysis. In particular, heel-strike and toe-off are commonly used to define the stance phase and swing phase in normal human walking gait cycle. They are used to segment a stream of human motion data into discrete and meaningful sections that can be analyzed and compared with available literatures. This paper proposes multi-resolution wavelet decomposition to reveal relevant information. Subsequently, proposed method differentiates the signal twice to identify the heel-strike and toe-off events. With this information, various temporal gait parameters can be easily estimated, such as the duration of swing phase and stance phase, and the duration of initial double support and terminal double support. Experimental results on the temporal parameters are comparable to the available benchmark data with minimal discrepancies due to the anthropometric properties of the subjects and inconsistent walking speed.

In this article we present a novel method for measuring protein similarity based on their tertiary structure. Our new method deals with suffix trees and classical information retrieval tasks, such as the vector space model, using tf-idf term weighing schema or using various types of similarity measures. Our goal to use the whole PDB database of known proteins, not just some kinds of selections, which have been studied in other works. For verification of our algorithm we are using comparisons with the SCOP database which is maintained primarily by humans. The next goal is to be able to categorize proteins not included in the latest version of the SCOP database with nearly 100% accuracy.

Typical computer vision systems usually include a set of components such as a preprocessor, a feature extractor, and a classifier that together represent an image processing pipeline. For each component there are different operators available. Each operator has a different number of parameters with individual parameter domains. The challenge in developing a computer vision system is the optimal choice of the available operators and their parameters to construct the appropriate pipeline for the problem at hand. The task of finding the optimal combination and setting depends strongly on the definition of the term optimal. Optimality can reach from minimal computational time to maximal recognition rate of a system. Using the example of the color-based object classification system, this contribution presents a comprehensive approach for finding an optimal system by defining the required image processing pipeline, defining the optimization problem for the classification and improving the optimization by taking parameter studies into consideration. This unique approach produces a color-based classification system with an illuminant independent structure.

Computer Programming is known as a difficult subject that requires complex cognitive task by the majority of students even for those who are taking Computer Science courses. It is normal for programming instructors to provide their students with alternative methods to help them in the learning process. When learning to program for the first time, students and lecturers usually are facing with difficulties in learning and teaching the subject. Mobile learning provides a great opportunity for learners to switch from rigid learning to fun learning using supported elements. The ability of mobile devices only is still not enough for learners to master in learning programming without the right options in techniques applied. This study will explore how Visualization Technique and Completion Strategy can be used to improve learning in a computer programming subject.

A ripe tomato recognition and localization system for tomato harvesting robotic systems in greenhouse is developed. The ripe tomato is segmented by K-means clustering using the L*a*b* color space. To extract a single ripe tomato, mathematical morphology is used to denoise and handle the situations of tomato overlapping and sheltering. Tomato's shape features are combined with the color features to recognize ripe tomatoes. The difference value between the centroid coordinate and the center coordinate of image is used to control the robot arm to aim the tomato center. The turned angles of the robot arm are recorded. The distance between the tomato and robot arm is measured by a laser sensor. With the turned angles and the distance, the tomato's 3D coordinate is calculated under the spherical coordinate system. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we address the issue of mining gradual classification rules. In general, gradual patterns refer to regularities such as "The older a person, the higher his salary''. Such patterns are extensively and successfully used in command-based systems, especially in fuzzy command applications. However, in such applications, gradual patterns are supposed to be known and/or provided by an expert, which is not always realistic in practice. In this work, we aim at mining from a given training dataset such gradual patterns for the generation of gradual classification rules. Gradual classification rules thus refer to rules where the antecedent is a gradual pattern and the conclusion is a class value.

In this paper, we introduce the application of transformation pattern recognition based on a complex artificial immune system. The key feature of the complex artificial immune system is the introduction of complex data representation. We use complex numbers as the data representation instead of binary numbers used before, besides the weight between different layers. The complex partial autocorrelation coefficients of input antigen which are considered as the antigen presentation are calculated in major histocompatibility complex (MHC) layer of the complex artificial immune system. In the simulations, the transformation of patterns, such as translation, scale or rotation, are recognized in much higher accuracy, and it has obviously higher noise tolerance ability than traditional real artificial immune system and even the complex PARCOR model.

There has been growing interest in studying combinatorial optimization problems by clustering strategy, with a special emphasis on the traveling salesman problem (TSP). Since TSP naturally arises as a sub problem in many transportation, manufacturing and various logistics application, this problem has caught much attention of mathematicians and computer scientists. A clustering strategy will decompose TSP into subgraph and form clusters, so it may reduce the TSP graph to smaller problem. The primary objective of this research is to produce a better clustering strategy that fit into Euclidean TSP. General approach for this research is to produce an algorithm for generating clusters and able to handle large size cluster. The next step is to produce Hamilton path algorithm and followed by inter cluster connection algorithm to form global tour. The significant of this research is solution result error less than 10% compare to best known solution (TSPLIB) and there is an improvement to a hierarchical clustering strategy in order to fit in such the Euclidean TSP method.

Within the context of information filtering, learning and adaptation of user profiles is a challenging research area and is, in part, addressed by work in adaptive information filtering (AIF). In order to be effective in a dynamic context, maintaining filtering performance, information filtering systems need to adapt to changes. We argue that artificial immune systems (AIS) exhibit the properties required by AIF, and have the potential to be exploited in the context of AIF. In this paper, we extract general features of immune systems and AIF, based on a principled meta-probe approach. We then propose an architecture for AIF incorporating ideas from AIS. Having such characteristics as adaptability, diversity and self-organised, we argue that AIS have suitable characteristics that are amenable to the task of AIF.
