Stereo vision involves deriving scene depth from the differences in two images of a scene. It is classically formulated as a matching problem, with the results of matching easily translated to scene depth. Recent research has shown that the stereo vision problem can be represented as a succession of smaller problems, one of which is the problem of calculating the likelihood of two pixels matching each other, otherwise known as calculating the matching costs of the two pixels. This paper examines the assumption of intensity constancy inherent in all pixel matching costs currently in use, as well as the specific case where this assumption is violated, i.e. when one image of the stereo pair is over or under exposed. A generalization of the commonly used absolute difference measure for pixel matching is proposed and shown to perform well regardless of over/under-exposure of the input images, taken from the Middlebury Stereo Vision dataset.

Acquiring new customers in any business is much more expensive than trying to keep the existing ones. Thus many prediction models are presented to detect churning customers. The objective of this paper was to improve the predictive accuracy and interpretability of churn detection. For this purpose, the application of the locally linear model tree (LOLIMOT) algorithm, which integrates the advantage of neural networks, tree model and fuzzy modeling, was experimented. Applied to the data of a major telecommunication company, the method is found to improve prediction accuracy significantly compared to other algorithms, such as artificial neural networks, decision trees, and logistic regression. The results also indicate that LOLIMOT can have accurate outcome in extremely unbalanced datasets.

In any flash flood evacuation operation, vehicle assignment at the inundated areas is vital to help eliminate loss of life. Vehicles of various types and capacities are used to evacuate victims to relief centers. This paper examines combinatorial optimization approach with the objective function to assign a specified number of vehicles with maximum number of evacuees to the potential inundated areas. Discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO) and improved DPSO are proposed and experimented on. Results are presented and compared. Improved DPSO with the proposed min-max approach yields better performance for all four testing categories. Experimenting on a large number of evacuees could further improve the performance of the DPSO.

Inspired by the competition of sport teams in a sport league, an algorithm is presented for optimizing nonlinear continuous functions. A number of individuals as sport teams compete in an artificial league for several weeks (iterations). Based on the league schedule in each week, teams play in pairs and the outcome is determined in terms of win or loss, given known the team's playing strength (fitness value) resultant from a particular team formation (solution). In the recovery period, each team devises the required changes in the formation/playing style (a new solution) for the next week contest and the championship goes on for a number of seasons (stopping condition). Performance of the proposed algorithm is tested in comparison with that of particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) on finding the global minimum of a number of benchmarked functions. Results testify that the new algorithm performs well on all test problems, exceeding or matching the best performance obtained by PSO. This suggests that further developments and practical applications of the proposed algorithm would be worth investigating in the future.

The template design problem is a constrained optimization problem originated from the printing industry. It involves printing several variations of a design onto one or more stencil sheets, where the aims are to minimize the number of stencils as well as the overproduction of prints of a particular design. Over the years, exact solution methods have been used to solve the problem. These methods could be useful for small to moderate-sized problem instances. However, when the problem instances are huge, the search space may easily grow too large for the systematic approaches. To date, no meta-heuristic or soft computing techniques have been used for this problem. In this paper, we propose the use of Extremal Optimization (EO) with multiple search operators for solving the template design problem. Different combinations of the search operators are tested via extensive numerical experiments. The results show that EO is indeed a feasible approach for template design optimization. The hybridization of EO with a deterministic local search has proven to be particularly effective.

The recent extensive growth of data on the Web, has generated an enormous amount of log records on Web server databases. Applying Web usage mining techniques on these vast amounts of historical data can discover potentially useful patterns and reveal user access behaviors on the Web site. Cluster analysis has widely been applied to generate user behavior models on server Web logs. Most of these off-line models have the problem of the decrease of accuracy over time resulted of new users joining or changes of behavior for existing users in model-based approaches. This paper proposes a novel approach to generate dynamic model from off-line model created by fuzzy clustering. In this method, we will use users' transactions periodically to change the off-line model. To this aim, an improved model of leader clustering along with a static approach is used to regenerate clusters in an incremental fashion.

In a full-service restaurant, it is crucial to share order information among staff in the dining room and kitchen. This paper introduces a real-time process management system for restaurants using an advanced point-of-sale (POS) system by which staff can share order information in real time. In this system, kitchen staff can check all customer orders by the dish that was ordered and the elapsed time of each order. Moreover, dining hall workers can grasp their customer situation with a monitor. By introducing this system to a restaurant, we confirmed that it can make preparation processes more efficient and reduce customers' claims.

With the rapid development of information technology, many applications have to deal with potentially infinite data streams. In such a dynamic context, storing the whole data stream history is unfeasible and providing a high-quality summary is required for decision makers. A practical and consistent summarization method is the extraction of the frequent itemsets over temporal windows. Nevertheless, this method suffers from a critical drawback: results pile up quickly making the analysis either uncomfortable or impossible for users. In this paper, we propose to unify these results thanks to a synthesis method for multidimensional frequent itemsets based on a graph structure and taking advantage of the data hierarchies. We overcome a major drawback of the tilted time window (TTW) standard framework by taking into account the data distribution. Experiments conducted on both synthetic and real datasets show that our approach can be applied to data streams.

Protein fold pattern recognition has been one of the most challenging problems in biology during the last 40 years. Recently due to the vast improvement in machine learning and pattern recognition methods many computer scientists have applied these methods to solve this problem. However, protein folding problem is much more complicated than ordinary machine learning problems because of its natural complexity imposed by the high dimensionality of feature space and diversity of different protein fold classes. To deal with such a challenging problem, we use an ensemble classifier model by applying MLP and RBF Neural Networks and Bayesian ensemble method. Also we have used the Laplace estimation method in order to smooth confusion matrices of the base classifiers. Experimental results imply that RBF Neural Network holds better Correct Classification Rate (CCR) compared to other common classification methods such as MLP networks. Our experiments also show that the Bayesian fusion method can improve the correct classification rate of proteins up to 20% with the final CCR of 59% by reducing both bias and variance error of the RBF classifiers, on a benchmark dataset containing 27 SCOP folds.

Generalized motion tracking algorithm using competitive learning networks is proposed. Two networks are applied in this algorithm with the input for the network is pixel value of the image. The output from this network is then simulated with second network, whose input is split into blocks with size of N x N. Two stages are involved in this project, namely preparation stage and tracking stage. The preparation stage develops both networks and uses them in tracking stage. Histogram threshold is applied to filter the group numbers of the simulated output. The histogram threshold is improved to enhance the performance of the algorithm. The groups of tracking target are initialized based on the position of the target in first frame. Post-processing, such as image filling is involved in the algorithm. The performance of proposed algorithm shows system robustness on orientation change, size and movement. Hence, feasibility of motion tracking algorithm with competitive learning network is verified as the proposed algorithm is able to locate tracking target in any positions.
