Discovering common visual patterns (CVPs) between two images is a challenging problem, due to the significant photometric and geometric transformations, and the high computational cost. In this paper, we formulate CVPs discovery as a graph matching problem, depending on pairwise geometric compatibility between feature correspondences. To efficiently find all CVPs, we propose two algorithms-Preliminary Initialization Optimization (PIO) and Post Agglomerative Combining (PAC). PIO reduces the search space of CVPs discovery based on the internal homogeneity of CVPs, while PAC refines the discovery result in an agglomerative way. Experiments on object recognition and near-duplicate image retrieval validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. Copyright 2011 ACM.

This paper describes results from the fast 3D scanning project conducted at Sheffield Hallam University in collaboration with Museums Sheffield. We focus on the technological aspects that are required for fast scanning and discuss the steps in the process from scanning and noise removal to 3D post-processing and how the resulting 3D models can be made available on a standard web browser. We also discuss some implications to the teaching and learning of 3D technologies to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper demonstrates application and usefulness of multivariate statistical methods like principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) for design and development of polymer coated acoustic wave (surface and bulk) vapor sensor array. Individual sensors in the array are functionalized with different polymers having varied selectivities towards chemical constituents of odor samples. In response to an odor sample a response pattern is generated analogous to olfactory epithelium in human nose. The pattern recognition algorithms extract vapor identification signatures similar to signal processing in biological nose. The successful operation of such an artificial nose system depends critically on the polymer coating materials that sensitize individual sensors so that the response patterns carry most discriminating information about vapor identities. The objective of this work is to show that the process of polymer selection and sensor array development can be made efficient by exploiting the existing vapor-polymer interaction databases through statistical data mining procedures and sensor array simulation for target vapor detection and identification. A prototype case study of polymer coated surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor array for discrimination of human body odor is presented. The detection of 14 major volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emanating from different parts of human body (skin, breath, blood, armpit) has been targeted. The available information about vapor-polymer partition coefficients is analyzed by PCA and HCA methods to select most efficient polymers. Out of 22 commercial and synthesized potential polymers for this purpose we found that a subset of 3 polymers: alkyl-amino-pyridyl substituted polysiloxane (SXPYR), poly4-hexafluoroisopropanol-styrene (P4V) and poly ethylenimine (PEI), produces the most optimal discrimination between different odor constituents. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we introduce a new category of fuzzy neural network with multi-output based on fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm (FCM-based FNNm). The premise part of the rules of the proposed network is realized with the aid of the scatter partition of input space generated by FCM clustering algorithm. The number of the partition of input space is composed of the number of clusters and the individual partitioned spaces describe the fuzzy rules. Due to these characteristics, we may alleviate the problem of the curse of dimensionality. The consequence part of the rule is represented by polynomial functions with multi-output. And the coefficients of the polynomial functions are learned by BP algorithm. To optimize the parameters of FCM-based FNNm we consider real-coded genetic algorithms. The proposed network is evaluated with the use of numerical experimentation.

At Linguistic Technology Systems, we are using Sequence Package Analysis (SPA) to architect a new, pragmatically-based part of speech tagging program to better conform to the fluidity and dynamism of human speech. This would allow natural language-driven voice user interfaces and audio mining programs - for use in both commercial and government applications - to adapt to the in situ construction of dialog, marked by the imprecision, ambiguity and vagueness extant in real-world communications. While conventional part of speech (POS) tagging programs consist of parsing structures derived from syntactic (and semantic) analysis, speech system developers (and users) are also very much aware of the fact that speech recognition difficulties still plague such conventional spoken dialog systems. This is because the inherent inexactitude, vagueness, and uncertainty that are inextricable to the dynamic and fluid nature of human dialog in the real world (e.g., a sudden accretion of anger/frustration may transform a simple question into a rhetorical one;or transform an otherwise simple and straightforward assessment into a gratuitous/sardonic remark) cannot be adequately addressed by conventional POS tagging programs based on syntactic and/or semantic analysis. If we consider for a moment that the biological organism of the human mind does not appear (for the most part) to have much difficulty following the vagarious ebb and flow of dialog with remarkable accuracy and comprehension, so that business transactions and social acts are consummated with a fair amount of regularity and predictability in our quotidian lives, why can't we design spoken dialog systems to emulate the human mind? To do this, we must first uncover the special formulae that humans regularly invoke to understand humanto- human dialog which by virtue of its fluid and dynamic constitution is often punctuated by ambiguities, obscurities, repetitions, ellipses, and deixes (indirect referents) - the same stubborn

This paper applied multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis(MESMA) to interpret Landsat satellite imageries and then analyzed the spatiotemporal dynamics of agricultural landscapes within Hangzhou metropolitan *** 1994 and 2003,this region has witnessed accelerated urbanization based on four indicators:total population,percentage of non-agriculture population,GDP per capita,and area of impervious ***,conversion,fragmentation,irregularity and isolation of agricultural landscapes were also captured according to four class-level metrics:total area,patch density,area-weighted mean shape index,and Euclidean nearest neighbor *** showed that increased impervious area was significantly correlated with declined area and configuration of agricultural *** in GDP per capita was also correlated with increased irregularity of agricultural *** of total population and percentage of nonagriculture population were weakly associated with all the agricultural landscape metrics,denoting that the two indicators did not have direct influences on agricultural landscape ***,distance to the nearest road was also a good indicator of how the cultivated land was lost and *** results demonstrated complexities of relationships between urbanization and agricultural landscapes,and highlighted the importance of selected variables,spatiotemporal scales and land-use classification when quantifying these relationships.

Biometric systems play an important role in the field of information security as they are extremely required for user authentication. Automatic signature recognition and verification is one of the biometric techniques, which is currently receiving renewed interest and is only one of several techniques used to verify the identities of individuals. Signatures provide a secure means for confirmation and authorization in legal documents. So nowadays, signature identification and verification becomes an essential component in automating the rapid processing of documents containing embedded signatures. In this paper, a technique for a bi-script off-line signature identification system is proposed. In the proposed signature identification system, the signatures of English and Bengali (Bangla) are considered for the identification process. Different features such as under sampled bitmaps, modified chain-code direction features and gradient features computed from both background and foreground components are employed for this purpose. Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Nearest Neighbour (NN) techniques are considered as classifiers for signature identification in the proposed system. A database of 1554 English signatures and 1092 Bengali signatures are used to generate the experimental results. Various results based on different features are calculated and analysed. The highest accuracies of 99.41%, 98.45%;and 97.75% are obtained based on the modified chain-code direction, under-sampled bitmaps and gradient features respectively using 1800 (1100 English+700 Bengali) samples for training and 846 (454 English+392 Bengali) samples for testing. © 2011 IEEE.

This chapter discusses the positive impact of soft vector quantization on the performance of machine-learning systems that include one or more vector quantization modules. The most impactful gains here are avoiding over-fitting and boosting the robustness of such systems in the presence of considerable parasitic variance;e.g. noise, in the runtime inputs. The chapter then introduces a soft vector quantization scheme with inverse power-function distributions, and analytically derives an upper bound of its relative quantization noise energy to that of typical (hard-deciding) vector quantization. This relative noise is expressed as a closed-form function of the power in order to allow the selection of its optimal values of that compromise both a soft enough vector quantization with a stable performance via small enough relative quantization noise. Finally, we present empirical evidence obtained via experimenting with two versions of the best reported OCR system for cursive scripts - that happened to deploy discrete HMMs - one version with hard vector quantization and the other one with our herein presented soft quantization. Test samples of real-life scanned Arabic text pages are used to challenge both versions;hence the recognition error margins are compared. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Non-technical losses identification has been paramount in the last decade. Since we have datasets with hundreds of legal and illegal profiles, one may have a method to group data into subprofiles in order to minimize the search for consumers that cause great frauds. In this context, a electric power company may be interested in to go deeper a specific profile of illegal consumer. In this paper, we introduce the Optimum-Path Forest (OPF) clustering technique to this task, and we evaluate the behavior of a dataset provided by a brazilian electric power company with different values of an OPF parameter. © 2011 IEEE.
