Fatigue is considered a contributing factor to accidents and illnesses at work. Hence, detecting fatigue by routinely monitoring an individual's person health is useful in preventing accidents and illnesses. There are many conventional methods for detecting fatigue; However, these methods require users to monitor the extent of their fatigue with gauges and instruments that can restrict users' actions. On the other hand, fatigue detection using posturography can mitigate this problem. This study focuses on posturography in seated position, because sitting is quite a common action in daily life, and posturography in seated position can be measured without restricting the users' movement. Posturography in seated position is measured when subjects sit on a chair attached to a pressure sensor sheet. We formed an assumption that the more tired a person is, the more rapidly the COP (center of pressure) converges toward a point. Based on this assumption, we investigated the difference between postural sway in seated position as subjects went from experiencing a condition of fatigue to non-fatigue. Experimental result showed that the COP for left-right axis for subjects experiencing fatigue converged earlier than for those experiencing non-fatigue.

The proposed scheme is an approach which can be used to improve the performance of traditional image segmentation systems. The scheme is based on a framework that employs the output of an existing image segmentation process together with hierarchical clustering using an information theoretic similarity measure. Experimental results clearly show that when the scheme operates in conjunction with a state of the art image segmentation algorithm, it yields significantly superior performance over a wide spectrum of natural images. These results are based on informal subjective evaluation tests as well as on objective measurements obtained from processing the Berkeley BSDS 300 image dataset.

The discretization of a HT space results in the ρ value detection error of a line. This paper addresses the ρ-direction precision improvement by compensating for this error. The mage are vertically or horizontally shifted, and a series peak positions are obtained by applying the standard HT (SHT) on these shifted images. The change of ρ value of a line due to these shifts is studied. On one hand this change can be measured by detecting the peak shift in HT space, on the other hand it can be obtained by geometric analysis on the vertical or horizontal shift in image space. The difference between the unit change in HT space (i.e. the ρ-direction resolution Δρ) and the unit change in image space (i.e. ρ value change due to vertical or horizontal unit shift) is used to measure the SHT ρ value detection error. A high precision ρ value is obtained by compensating for this error. The experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we propose a new method for computing and applying language model look-ahead in a dynamic network decoder, exploiting the sparseness of backing-off n-gram language models. Only partial (sparse) look-ahead tables are computed, with a size that depends on the number of words that have an n-gram score in the language model for a specific context, rather than a constant, vocabulary dependent size. Since high order backing-off language models are inherently sparse, this mechanism reduces the runtime- and memory effort of computing the look-ahead tables by magnitudes. A modified decoding algorithm is required to apply these sparse LM look-ahead tables efficiently. We show that sparse LM look-ahead is much more efficient than the classical method, and that full n-gram look-ahead becomes favorable over lower order look-ahead even when many distinct LM contexts appear during decoding.

Circular shortest paths represent a powerful methodology for image segmentation. The circularity condition ensures that the contour found by the algorithm is closed, a natural requirement for regular objects. Several implementations have been proposed in the past that either promise closure with high probability or ensure closure strictly, but with a mild computational efficiency handicap. Circularity can be viewed as a priori information that helps recover the correct object contour. Our "observation" is that circularity is only one among many possible constraints that can be imposed on shortest paths to guide them to a desirable solution. In this contribution, we illustrate this opportunity under a volume constraint but the concept is generally applicable. We also describe several adornments to the circular shortest path algorithm that proved useful in applications.

Palmprint has proved to be one of the most unique and stable biometric characteristics. Almost all the current palmprint recognition techniques capture the two dimensional (2D) image of the palm surface and use it for feature extraction and matching. Although 2D palmprint recognition can achieve high accuracy, the 2D palmprint images can be easily counterfeited and much three dimensional (3D) depth information is lost in the imaging process. In this paper, an embedded three dimensional surface measurement system based on digital signal processor (DSP) is presented. This embedded system is based on the principle of structure light. A group of coded stripes pictures are produced and projected by a configuration tool of DSP/BIOS operating system firstly. Then, phase information is unwrapped from capture images. Finally, cloud data is calculated. Experimental results show that this three- dimensional surface measurement embedded system based on DM642 can acquire three dimensional information efficiently and effectively.

Biometric systems play an important role in the field of information security as they are extremely required for user authentication. Automatic signature recognition and verification is one of the biometric techniques, which is currently receiving renewed interest and is only one of several techniques used to verify the identities of individuals. Signatures provide a secure means for confirmation and authorization in legal documents. So nowadays, signature identification and verification becomes an essential component in automating the rapid processing of documents containing embedded signatures. In this paper, a technique for a bi-script off-line signature identification system is proposed. In the proposed signature identification system, the signatures of English and Bengali (Bangla) are considered for the identification process. Different features such as under sampled bitmaps, modified chain-code direction features and gradient features computed from both background and foreground components are employed for this purpose. Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Nearest Neighbour (NN) techniques are considered as classifiers for signature identification in the proposed system. A database of 1554 English signatures and 1092 Bengali signatures are used to generate the experimental results. Various results based on different features are calculated and analysed. The highest accuracies of 99.41%, 98.45% and 97.75% are obtained based on the modified chain-code direction, under-sampled bitmaps and gradient features respectively using 1800 (1100 English+700 Bengali) samples for training and 846 (454 English+392 Bengali) samples for testing.

This paper demonstrates application and usefulness of multivariate statistical methods like principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) for design and development of polymer coated acoustic wave (surface and bulk) vapor sensor array. Individual sensors in the array are functionalized with different polymers having varied selectivities towards chemical constituents of odor samples. In response to an odor sample a response pattern is generated analogous to olfactory epithelium in human nose. The pattern recognition algorithms extract vapor identification signatures similar to signal processing in biological nose. The successful operation of such an artificial nose system depends critically on the polymer coating materials that sensitize individual sensors so that the response patterns carry most discriminating information about vapor identities. The objective of this work is to show that the process of polymer selection and sensor array development can be made efficient by exploiting the existing vapor-polymer interaction databases through statistical data mining procedures and sensor array simulation for target vapor detection and identification. A prototype case study of polymer coated surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor array for discrimination of human body odor is presented. The detection of 14 major volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emanating from different parts of human body (skin, breath, blood, armpit) has been targeted. The available information about vapor-polymer partition coefficients is analyzed by PCA and HCA methods to select most efficient polymers. Out of 22 commercial and synthesized potential polymers for this purpose we found that a subset of 3 polymers: alkyl-amino-pyridyl substituted polysiloxane (SXPYR), poly4-hexafluoroisopropanol-styrene (P4V) and poly ethylenimine (PEI), produces the most optimal discrimination between different odor constituents.
