This paper investigates the effect of diversity caused by Negative Correlation Learning (NCL) in the combination of neural classifiers and presents an efficient way to improve combining performance. Decision Templates and Averaging, as two non-trainable combining methods and Stacked Generalization as a trainable combiner are investigated in our experiments. Utilizing NCL for diversifying the base classifiers leads to significantly better results in all employed combining methods. Experimental results on five datasets from UCI repository indicate that by employing NCL, the performance of the ensemble structure can be more favorable compared to that of an ensemble use independent base classifiers.

Polar Harmonic Transform (PHT) is termed to represent a set of transforms those kernels are basic waves and harmonic in nature. PHTs consist of Polar Complex Exponential Transform (PCET), Polar Cosine Transform (PCT) and Polar Sine Transform (PST). They are proposed to represent invariant image patterns for two dimensional image retrieval and pattern recognition tasks. They are demonstrated to show superiorities comparing with other methods on describing rotation invariant patterns for images. Kernel computation of PHTs is also simple and has no numerical stability issue. However in order to increase the computation speed, fast computation method is needed especially for real world applications like limited computing environments, large image databases and realtime systems. This paper presents Fast Polar Harmonic Transforms (FPHTs) including Fast Polar Complex Exponential Transform (FPCET), Fast Polar Cosine Transform (FPCT) and Fast Polar Sine Transform (FPST) that are deduced based on mathematical properties of trigonometric functions. The proposed FPHTs are averagely over 6 similar to 8 times faster than PHTs that significantly boost computation process. The experimental results on both synthetic and real data are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed fast transforms.

The paper considers automatic visual recognition of signed expressions. The proposed method is based on modeling gestures with subunits, which is similar to modeling speech by means of phonemes. To define the subunits a data-driven procedure is applied. The procedure consists in partitioning time series, extracted from video, into subsequences which form homogeneous groups. The cut points are determined by an immune optimization procedure based on quality assessment of the resulting clusters. In the paper the problem is formulated, its solution method is proposed and experimentally verified on a database of 100 Polish words. The results show that our subunit-based classifier outperforms its whole-word-based counterpart, which is particularly evident when new words are recognized on the basis of a small number of examples.

Gas-water flow in horizontal development wells is complicated and changeable. In order to monitor reservoir development status and pace accurately, primary problem should be solved is to distinguish and recognize downhole gas-water flow patterns. Multi-phase flow simulative device, which is similar to downhole status, was used to conduct a series of measurement experiments using air and tap water as test media. Mixed flows were measured by real production logging tool (PL T) string at different inclinations and flow states in the transparent experimental well-bore, aim to study flow pattern recognition methods in horizontal gas wells by production logging information. Production logging experimental flow patterns analysis basing on experimental flow pattern observations and categorization reveals that gas-water mixed flow occurring in measurement procedure not only obey the general law of hydrodynamic but also own its unique characteristics resulted from logging procedure. But these experimental flow patterns still can be recognized from log response characteristics of spinner flowmeter intuitively. Cross-section water holdup vs. actual inlet water cut experiment relationship charts illustrate the links between flow parameters and flow patterns, thus they can be used to guide flow pattern recognition. The CAT 3D plots of phase profile, which are interpolation imaged by CA TView software, compared with production logging experimental flow patterns suggest that gas-water flow patterns can be recognition even more intuitively by CAT 3D plots of phase pronIe. Combined with additional recognition method that mentioned above, more reliable flow pattern recognition results will be concluded for horizontal gas wells. ©2010 IEEE.

The paper presents an analysis of several preprocessing, feature extraction and classification methods in combination for yielding optimum performance for SAW sensors array based electronic nose systems. It is found that the combination of logarithmic data preprocessing, linear discriminant analysis based feature extraction and support vector machine based classification yields optimum results. © 2010 IEEE.

Current trends in health management improvement demand the standardization of care protocols to achieve better quality and efficiency. The use of Clinical Pathways is an emerging solution for that problem. However, current Clinical Pathways are big manuals written in natural language and highly affected by human subjectivity. These problems make the deployment and dissemination of them extremely difficult in real practice environments. In this work, a complete computer based architecture to help the representation and execution of Clinical Pathways is suggested. Furthermore, the difficulties inherent to the design of formal Clinical Pathways in this way requires new specific design tools to help making the system useful. Process Mining techniques can help to automatically infer processes definition from execution samples. Yet, the classical Process Mining paradigm is not totally compatible with the Clinical Pathways paradigm. In this paper, a pattern recognition algorithm based in an evolution of the Process Mining classical paradigm is presented and evaluated as a solution to this situation. The proposed algorithm is able to infer Clinical Pathways from execution logs to support the design of Clinical Pathways.

This paper presents a method to improve the search rate of Max-Min Ant System for the traveling salesman problem. The proposed method gives deviations from the initial pheromone trails by using a set of local optimal solutions calculated in advance. Max-Min Ant System has demonstrated impressive performance, but the rate of search is relatively low. Considering the generic purpose of stochastic search algorithms, which is to find near optimal solutions subject to time constraints, the rate of search is important as well as the quality of the solution. The experimental results using benchmark problems with 51 to 318 cities suggested that the proposed method is better than the conventional method in both the quality of the solution and the rate of search.

In this paper, we propose a method to detect and identify commercial films from broadcast videos by using Temporal Occurrence pattern (TOP). Our method uses the characteristic of broadcast videos in Japan that each individual commercial film appears multiple times in broadcast stream and typically has the same duration (e.g., 15 seconds). Using this characteristic, the method can detect as well as identify individual commercial films within given video archive. Based on simple signature (global feature) for each frame image, the method first puts all frames into numbers of buckets where each bucket contains frames having the same signature, and thus they appear the same. For each bucket, TOP as a binary sequence representing the occurrence time within video archive is then generated. All buckets are then clustered using simple hierarchical clustering with similarity between TOPs allowing possible temporal offset. This clustering stage can stitch up all frames for each commercial film and identify multiple occurrence of the same commercial film at the same time. We tested our method using actual broadcast video archive and confirmed good performance in detecting and identifying commercial films. © 2010 IEEE.

Geomagnetic precursor is one of many earthquake precursors, which have better effects on earthquake prediction, while the diurnal variation anomaly of geomagnetic precursor Z component is an important one in short-impending anomalies. Basing on the pattern distance of geomagnetic precursor Z component diurnal variation , this paper proposes an anomaly recognition algorithm which combines the feature of geomagnetic precursor data with time series similarity measure. We validate the effectiveness of the algorithm through the actual data. © 2010 IEEE.

Graphics processing units (GPUs) are gaining widespread use in high-performance computing because of their performance advantages relative to CPUs. However, the reliability of GPUs is largely unproven. In particular, current GPUs lack error checking and correcting (ECC) in their memory subsystems. The impact of this design has not been previously measured at a large enough scale to quantify soft error events. We present MemtestG80, our software for assessing memory error rates on NVIDIA graphics cards. Furthermore, we present a large-scale assessment of GPU error rate, conducted by running MemtestG80 on over 50,000 hosts on the Folding@ home distributed computing network. Our control experiments on consumer-grade and dedicated-GPGPU hardware in a controlled environment found no errors. However, our survey on Folding@home finds that, in their installed environments, two-thirds of tested GPUs exhibit a detectable, pattern-sensitive rate of memory soft errors. We show that these errors persist after controlling for overclocking and environmental proxies for temperature, but depend strongly on board architecture. © 2010 IEEE.
