Robot skills are motion or grasping primitives from which a complicated robot task consists. Skills can be directly learned and recognized by a technique named Programming-by-Demonstration. A human operator demonstrates a set of reference skills where his motions are recorded by a data-capturing system and modeled via fuzzy clustering and a Takagi-Sugeno modeling technique. The skill models use the time instants as input and the actions of the operator as outputs. In the recognition phase, the robot identifies the skill that has been shown by the operator in a novel test demonstration. The recognition is done by comparing of the time clusters of the test skill and the reference skills. Finally, using the corresponding reference skill model the robot executes the recognized skill. Skill models can be updated on-line where drastic differences between learned and real world conditions during the execution of skills by the robot are eliminated using the Broyden update formula. This method was extended for fuzzy models especially for time cluster models. The updated model is used for further executions of the same skill by the robot.

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the world. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has been known as a measure of cardiac electrophysiology that independently predicts sudden death in CHD patients. In this paper, we develop a Poincaré encoding based HRV patterns discovering Incremental Artificial neural Network (PHIAN). Long-term Electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings are made in various daily activities under the controlled heart rate and breathing frequency. Incremental training is exploited to achieve the ability to train the classifier model with new data without destroying the previously learned patterns. The hidden layer of the network is updated by new node insertions based on local errors. However, the insertion in the overlapping decision areas has to be stopped when it on longer improves the performance of the classification model. The algorithm effectiveness is finally assessed in terms of classification error in relation to the data set structure and network structure. The results manifest that PHIAN with a satisfactory number of nodes outperforms the previous techniques.

This paper presents a novel discriminant analysis (DA) for feature extraction using mutual information (MI) and Fisher discriminant analysis (MI-FDA). Most DA algorithms for feature extraction are based on a transformation which maximizes the between-class scatter and minimizes the within-class scatter. In contrast, the proposed method uses the Fisher's criterion to find a transformation that maximizes the MI between the transferred features and the target classes and minimizes the redundancy. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using UCI databases and compared with the performance of some DA-based algorithms. The results indicate that MI-FDA provides a robust performance over different data sets with different characteristics. On average, an accuracy rate of 81.3% was achieved using MI-FDA.
