In his March 2009 resume, David L. Parnas noted that the phrase “softwareengineering” was coined to urge software designers to adopt the knowledge and discipline of engineers in other domains, allowing them to rely on well-developed problem-solving skills, analytical methods, mathematics, and scientific knowledge instead of relying exclusively on intuition and natural ability. We attempt to work towards that goal by reintroducing axiomatic design into softwareengineering, addressing major concerns and critiques highlighted by previous research in the field. The axiomatic design offers a scientific approach to improve design activities based on rational and logical thought processes and tools. The ultimate goal of axiomatic design is to encourage solution-neutral thinking to identify problems and requirements, fostering human designer's creativity, reducing random search process, and minimizing random trial-and-error to determine the best design among those proposed.

Many studies have been performed on integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) with cloud services. As these systems become widely used, quality metrics are of concern. For example, users might specify access control to restrict their sensitive data being processed in the cloud. Routers, e.g., API gateways, message brokers, or sidecars, can provide this access control by blocking or routing device data to a specific cloud service. However, a static routing application might not suit the dynamic behavior of IoT applications well. For example, in a centralized schema, where all device data is routed to a component for control checking, performance can be an issue. On the other hand, distributed routing can harm the reliability of a system, as device data might be lost due to an unresponsive service. We present the Smart and Adaptive Routing (SAR) architecture that creates an optimal reconfiguration solution using a deep neural network based on the quality metrics of an IoT application. To design our architecture, we give a background of the published studies and a review of the gray literature, e.g., practitioner blogs, to categorize the knowledge in the domain of IoT-cloud traffic management. We systematically evaluate our approach in an extensive evaluation of 4500 cases and compare SAR with an empirical data set of 1200 hours. The results show that our approach significantly improves quality-of-service measures by adapting the IoT-cloud system at runtime.

The high dependency of a wiring harness on its surrounding components requires changes to be made almost daily during development. To ensure operability, these adjustments have to be carried out in some cases even after the data freeze of a development phase. Since these changes may also be relevant for subsequent development phases, redundant design efforts are the consequence. One way to increase the efficiency of these processes is to reuse knowledge. This paper reviews the state of the art of knowledge reuse in engineering design and in software development. Furthermore, an overview of the structure of a wiring harness, as well as the knowledge contained in the corresponding CAD data is presented. Thereupon, all scenarios are specified in which knowledge reuse in the wiring harness development could be possible. Subsequently, a methodology for complete, partial and assisted reuse is specified enabling the transfer of gained knowledge into other CADdata sets of wiring harnesses. In addition, the conditions that have to be met for the application of each reuse method are presented. Finally, the requirements needed for the implementation of the shown methodology into a CAD system are specified.

Continuing technical vocational education and training (TVET) and professional development of the entire automotive sector towards implementing Industry 4.0 and 5.0 tools, methods and technologies has become an essential component of today's knowledge society. The principle of lifelong learning permeates all areas of professional and private life and has manifested itself as an essential component of today's knowledge society. Especially the automotive sector is challenged to successfully master the green and digital transformation. This needs engineers with expertise to actively shape the dual transformation. In this context, continuing education and training on a postgraduate level is indispensable. This paper illustrates continuing technical vocational education and training at Graz University of Technology, managed by the Life Long Learning organizational unit. As an example, a course concept is described in more detail on the basis of the university course Automotive Mechatronics. The aim of this paper is to present a successful TVET program and to show how postgraduate education over the lifespan can succeed sustainably for engineering professionals in the automotive sector.
