With the development of big data, machine learning, and AI, existing softwareengineering techniques must be re-imagined to provide the productivity gains that developers desire. Furthermore, specialized hardware accelerators like GPUs or FPGAs have become a prominent part of the current computing landscape. However, developing heterogeneous applications is limited to a small subset of programmers with specialized hardware knowledge. To improve productivity and performance for data-intensive and compute-intensive development, now is the time that the softwareengineering community should design new waves of refactoring, testing, and debugging tools for big data analytics and heterogeneous application development. In this paper, we overview software development challenges in this new data-intensive scalable computing and heterogeneous computing domain. We describe examples of automated softwareengineering (debugging, testing, and refactoring) techniques that target this data and compute intensive domain and share lessons learned from building these techniques.

Quantum computing (QC) shows the potential to trigger a paradigm shift for numerous industries. As an emerging technology, methodological support for designing and developing QC-based applications is lacking. This paper presents the results of a case study applying consortium research in order to perform a requirements engineering process for two QC-based applications in the manufacturing industry. The results show the differences between requirements engineering for QC applications and conventional software applications. The major findings point to the need for QC knowledge and best practices for a successful requirements engineering process and elaborate on the main differences between QC application- and software application requirements.

The spectrometer, a crucial tool in optical research, finds wide-spread application across various disciplines. However, existing spectrometer softwaresystems often lack the capability for collaborative work, being confined to the control of a single device and presenting challenges in supporting system integration. This paper addresses these issues by investigating spectrometer softwaresystems and data processing algorithms. A software system tailored to the integration needs of spectrometers is designed and implemented. Additionally, a set of data processing algorithms is developed to enhance spectral data processing. Using LSPR reflectance spectroscopy as an exemplar, the integrated spectrometer software system is employed to assess the performance of the LSPR biosensor chip, encompassing sensitivity, figure of merit, resolution, and other crucial metrics. This study aims to rectify existing limitations in spectrometer softwaresystems, offering more efficient and versatile methodologies and algorithms for spectral analysis.

This paper proposes CSS, a built-in channel state scrambling scheme to provide always-on protection for channel state information. CSS uses randomly generated scrambling vectors to emulate human activities, preventing eavesdroppers from recovering human physical activity from the channel state. By carefully designing the scrambling scheme based on physical channel models, we ensure that legacy receivers can successfully decode the frames and all frames transmitted over the air are scrambled. Furthermore, legitimate Wi-Fi sensors can still recover the true activity with a pre-shared secret key. Implementation on a real communication system shows that CSS can retain the same frame-error rate for commercial wireless receivers while misleading eavesdroppers with a success rate of over 95%.
