In the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in India, the number of engineering institutions grew from under 10 to over 500 from 1978 to 2008. This resulted in a severe shortage of good quality teachers and therefore poor quality of graduating students. In India, the employability of engineering graduates is 25%. Considering the scale and wickedness of the problem, the lead author and her team worked on designing innovative and radical solutions to this problem during the last eight years. We restrict our research focus to those colleges who responded to our call for partnership in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and to the center, EnhanceEdu, we created at IIIT (international Institute of Information Technology) at Hyderabad. We present the EnhanceEdu design story using a new pragmatic approach called Design Story Research (DeStoRe) which has its basis in Design Science Research. An overarching design story frames past, present and future work of an entity, seeing possibilities for radical innovation.

The pillars of Computer Science and engineering (CSE) curriculum are Data Structures, Database management systems, languages, operating systems and algorithms. This article explains the relationship and connectivity of these core courses. Authors follow the pedagogy technique to teach the Data Structures (DS) by considering its evolution. The article focus on the method of providing connectivity between the building blocks of DS like Data Containers, Container Iterators, Algorithms and Functors. Each data structure is explained by considering its property, iterations, problems and applications. The three fold method is followed to teach DS, which includes think, build and discuss phases. The pedagogy techniques practiced by authors are revealed many mysteries, which are not discussed in most of the DS text books.

Soft skills are significant to the engineering labour market, especially in Information Technology where demands are high on for instance communication skill, teamwork skill, presentation skill, etc. Despite their importance, educating students in using those skills is not fully included in the bachelor education programmes, especially in developing countries. This project aims to gain insights in how soft skills are taught in Vietnamese universities, and which skills are missing in their bachelor education programmes. The findings are intended to support education in order to develop the teaching of soft skills for Vietnamese students, and decrease the unemployment rate of Vietnamese graduates. In this project, semi-structured interviews, by e-mail, have been used to collect the data. There are eight Vietnamese interviewees who have experiences from various education programmes. The interview transcripts were then analysed and categorised into themes. The results of our work are a preliminary identification of missing skills in the undergraduate programmes, and a set of proposed skills that could be considered to improve the education programmes.

One of the challenges to promoting computer science in schools is to create and retain interest in programming. We describe a pilot project for primary and secondary students in Macau to introduce NET Gadgeteer, a rapid prototyping platform for building electronic devices. The aim of the yearlong project was to generate interest in building devices, while learning the basics of programming concepts. Our experience with the weekend workshops indicates that the hands-on approach helped to engage the students. Results from a survey of 155 students point to increased engagement through active learning and growing enthusiasm to learn programming. We report some issues that surfaced and give recommendations for teachers who wish to consider such devices for teaching programming to novices. We hope to further explore ways to incorporate learning programming through tangible devices in the curriculum in local schools.

engineering graduates are important human resource for developing countries like Malaysia. While industries had acknowledged that most of the engineering graduates are very much competent technically, they also highlighted the lack of people/soft skills in these graduates. With the introduction of Outcome-Based Education ( OBE) approach, local institutions of higher learning are working towards addressing these issues by integrating the soft skills as part of the learning outcomes of an engineering program. CDIO, Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate, is an educational framework for engineering education which aims to produce graduates who will be able to integrate technical knowledge, professional skills and work experience expected of them by the industries. The CDIO syllabus and standards provide the "what" and "how" for reformulating engineering program to prepare students for the needs of industry. This paper presents the systems approach of planning and implementing the CDIO based curriculum that addresses the critical components of the "hard" as well as soft skills together with the roles of instructors in engineering programs. It highlights the structured approach of designing the curriculum which is based on best practices. The paper also presents the issues and challenges of implementing this framework in an engineering program especially in meeting the OBE and accreditation requirements.

Computer science terminology is generally based on words that have a related original meaning in English and rooted in western tradition. Hence, students from other cultures and students that are not native English speakers, will not be helped by language and culture in understanding computer science concepts. In this work, the authors review the interrelationship between language, cultural background, and the learning of computer science. A comparative study is under preparation in which this relationship is to be examined. The study will compare the intuitive understanding of computer science concepts between Saudi student groups of different English language proficiency levels and of different maturity levels. A test has been designed in order to reveal differences in the perception of computer science concepts that can be attributed to such background differences. The study will serve as a starting point for further work on how computer science education can be enhanced for students that are non-native English speakers.

learning activities are increasingly performed in online learning environments. Automatic assessment is used in many systems to give students immediate and personalized feedback allowing them to solve exercises regardless of time and place. However, this creates new challenges for students because they are required to independently regulate their own learning. Because of the lack of direct guidance, it is easy for students to resort to bad study habits. In this paper, we investigate what kinds of harmful study habits can be observed in online learning environments that utilize automatic assessment. We study data from two computer science courses with programming exercises and algorithm simulation exercises. The results are in line with earlier findings that starting to study near the deadline is linked to inferior performance. This is also observed in a within-subject comparison which suggests that the relationship is causal. Furthermore, signs of trial-and-error problem solving are observed in some students and they are also correlated with inferior performance in the exercises and the exam.
