This paper presents the design and management issues of a compulsory computing internship course in Malaysia. In the course, all computing students are required to complete a minimum of twelve weeks on the job training as part of the requirement for graduation. Extensive measures were put in place by the department to ensure that students are thoroughly assessed and monitored during their placement by both company supervisors and academic staff. We discuss our observations and scalability constraints with the course as student recruitment for all programs increases. An alternative model of assessment and administration is also presented to overcome the shortcomings of the current course design. Early implementations of the revised course resulted in better overall management by streamlining processes but also brings about new challenges.

This study was conducted to study the differences in the practice level of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) between expert and novice lecturers in their teaching and learning process based on five components in PCK. The components are knowledge of 1) content, 2) importance of subject, 3) students' difficulty, 4) pedagogy, and 5) evaluation techniques. Eight lecturers were chosen in this study, consisting of four expert lecturers and four novice lecturers from the Faculty of Science in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The data were collected through interviews and teaching observation. The interviews were audio recorded, while the lesson observations were conducted using video recording and note taking. The data obtained were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The study found that there are differences between experts and novices lecturers in their knowledge concerning students' difficulties, importance of subject and pedagogy while the expert lecturers are masters in respect of students' difficulties and pedagogy but not concerning the importance of the subject. The results also showed that both expert and novice science lecturers are masters of knowledge concerning content and evaluation techniques.

One of the biggest challenges of the computer-science department at our university is handling the enormous heterogeneity of freshmen concerning both their previous programming abilities and their learning behaviors due to their biographical and social background. In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of a preliminary programming course based on the teaching method of Mastery learning that is particularly suited for groups of students characterized by considerable diversity. Trained peer tutors closely guide the participants through a step-by-step programming exercise. We tested the method in several courses that ran for two and a half days four weeks before the start of lectures. We collected data from two different surveys(N = 200 and N = 300, respectively). First, we quantified the considerable differences concerning the prior experience in programming of the participants. Second, we succeeded to show that the outcome of our method is independent from different sensory preferences and different computer-usage behaviors of the students. Third, the results of the survey demonstrate that our method is suited to increasing the self-perception of programming ability. This helps freshmen to overcome initial self-doubts when beginning their CS studies.

The concept of binary, which is the basis of how computer works, is often taught in Taiwan's high school computer courses as the introductory unit of the class "Introduction to Computers". In the past, teachers used to lecture through binary concepts such as the decimal binary conversion, ASCII code transformation, and several traditional courses. However, most students did not know why they needed to learn binary concepts, and seemed less interested in learning. To enhance the effectiveness of learning, we incorporated some examples corresponding to each binary concept to link students' life experiences to the concepts in order to make learning meaningful. In this paper, we will share our teaching materials for the binary concept from the course "Introduction to Computers". The lesson starts from how computer stores values, text or image data to introduce basic concepts of binary data interpretation and hex conversion. Afterwards, a combination of simple logic gates adder instance is introduced to guide students to learn how to perform a binary compute operation. Finally, software CPU simulator is covered to allow students to learn and visualize how computer uses binary data and basic operations to perform some specific compute functions.

This study explores how first year students in Information Technology engineering at College of Science and Technology, Royal University of Bhutan, learn C programming. An online questionnaire was administrated to the students and asked about time spent in collaborative learning, individual coding and watching someone code. These data were analyzed in correlating to their exam scores. Students' ways of preparing for exam and their concept on C programming are categorized. Our result indicate a relationship between how the different ways of working relate to their exam results. Further, the insights of the project point to that learning of theory of programming and practicing programming go hand in hand in a C programming course. Our intent is that this study will be helpful for future teachers and students in programming courses in Bhutan and in its region.

Authoring System is one of the computer-based subjects that expose students with creative activities using an authoring tool such as Adobe Flash software to produce multimedia applications. The demonstrations and hands-on activities among students while learning this subject are fundamental. Therefore, the guidance from the instructors through the use of metacognitive scaffolding may ease their difficulties, as this type of guidance supports students in understanding the best possible strategy to accomplish difficult tasks and thus, develop their thinking. In this study, students were scaffolded by the instructor through the use of mechanisms of metacognitive scaffolding. This guidance was delivered through the discussion on the Facebook group page, in which each prompted mechanism of metacognitive scaffolding from the instructor was coded accordingly. In addition, to demonstrate the effectiveness, students were given a pre and post test assessment. This study was carried out for seven weeks. The sample of the study was composed of twenty master students from the Educational Technology program. The quantitative analysis reveals that students' performance in learning Authoring System subject increase after receiving metacognitive scaffolding from their instructor.

Experience has shown that students face some difficulties in the learning of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Programming Technique and Micro controller courses which are the core technical courses taught in MARA High Skill College Penang (KKTM), Malaysia. As a preliminary study, it was considered pertinent to identify the learning approaches that students use and which characteristics will contribute to learning success and the achievement of learning outcomes. Thus, this study will first focus on Student Approach to learning (SAL). SAL can be described as how students approach their learning tasks during the process of study while considering their own actual motivation, how they learn the topics and how they engage in the learning process in real college context. Two learning approaches will be examined, i.e., either surface or deep learning approaches. The samples will be taken from first and second year students in Industrial Mechatronics engineering Technology Program. Questionnaire is the main instrument used that will focus on students' learning approaches. Interviews were conducted to gather more qualitative data which will support the results from the survey. The results from this study will inform and uncover the relationship among students' approaches to learning and study success. This finding will be useful to determine students' engagement in learning, and thus will help to inform on how to support and foster students use of deep learning approach and improve their self-regulation in learning.
