At the core of every computing related discipline and impacting everyone everywhere, computational thinking or CT has increasingly emerged as its own subject in all levels of education. How to effectively teach CT skills poses real challenges and creates opportunities. Focusing on engineering and computer science undergraduates, we resourcefully integrated elements of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into introductory computing courses. In addition to a comprehension of the essence of CT, AI enabled inspirations of collaborative problem solving beyond abstraction, logical reasoning, critical, and analytical thinking. It fostered the study of basic data structures and algorithms. Students enjoyed active learning classrooms. learning to learn, they constructed essential knowledge from solving exciting AI puzzles, competing in strategic AI games, and participating in intellectual discussion. Every activity is designed to allow students to fully engage their mental tools. Neither coding nor programming was required.

Discussion forums play a key role in most university courses today as a way to provide support for students outside classroom hours. However, with large class sizes and growing workloads for academics, monitoring often-large discussion forums is not an easy task. As a result, situations where students are distressed, questions are unanswered, or students require urgent support, may go unnoticed. Text classification and sentiment analysis techniques have become a popular approach to determine user attitudes, emotions and experiences within business and social science domains. Initial research has begun to explore the application of text classification to students written text to investigate how students experience learning processes. In this paper, we build on this emerging field, and apply text classification to forum text to determine if we can correctly notify lecturers when a student is experiencing difficulties with their Computer Science studies. We implement a Naive Bayes Classifier and apply it to a Moodle forum data. Our results show the potential benefits of this approach and also highlight key avenues for future work.

The K-12 ICT (Information and Communication Technology) curriculum in Taiwan faced many changes in last two decades. In 1990s, Computers is a required subject in junior high schools and an elective subject in senior high schools, along with many elementary schools offered computer classes. In 2000s, when ICT was popular in schools and families, Taiwan MOE (Ministry of Education) decided that ICT should be integrated into all subjects and Computers was excluded from the required learning areas in K-9 education. On the other hand, computing science was considered important in senior high schools and Introduction to ICT became a compulsory subject in 2006. As Taiwan will implement a twelve-year public education program, the MOE is undergoing revising the existed K-12 curriculum. This paper reports our recommendation on a new ICT curriculum to be implemented in K-12 schools. The recommended ICT curriculum is based on Delphi research methodology. The merit of Delphi technique is to form consensus among experts through several rounds of questionnaire survey. By reviewing the ICT curriculum from many developed countries and organizations, we drafted a preliminary ICT curriculum, including its strands, objectives, and framework. The study is still undergoing. The paper reports the preliminary results of the first stage of our Delphi survey.

Many students with little pre-college exposure to computer science (CS) share widespread incorrect ideas and a negative attitude towards the subject, leading to wrong decisions when choosing their major. In order to support these students, we developed a questionnaire built on Kolb's and Pask's learning style theories. Our aim was to create an instrument that allows to predict student performance in CS based solely on non-subject specific information. Using 62 items from two questionnaires to operationalize the three personality traits as described by Kolb and Pask, we selected a subset of 15 items by comparing the results of students with high and low achievements in CS. Subsequently, we determined the so-called DiCS-Index by adding up the values of all these 15 items, where a high DiCS-Index suggests a good performance in CS. Finally, the instrument was tested at our local CS department. The analysis of the personality traits suggests that CS, as a course of studies, is open to a highly heterogeneous student body with varying preferences and strengths. The only significant difference found is a clearly better performance of students who prefer learning through abstract conceptualization as opposed to gathering concrete experience. Concerning the questionnaire, we found a clear distinction between students with high and low achievements indicated by a highly significant difference in their corresponding DiCS-Indices.

This paper shares the experiences of the authors from teaching an undergraduate introductory course on mobile computing at ACU since 2009 to the present. Discussed within this paper are the authors' experiences meeting the challenges of the rapidly developing landscape of mobile app dev. Emphasis is placed on the formation of a unified educational space for training in engineering disciplines. An approach to the integration of a large number of application software solutions based on the "Moodle" distance learning shell was developed. Inquiry based Inductive learning methodology is one of the best technique especially for the engineering students who are expected to solve real world problems. But it is very difficult to standardize a particular learning methodology for an institution with diverse attitude, diverse characteristics, diverse languages, diverse financial back grounds, and diverse cultural scenario with variable educational standard of the students. As the teaching methodology depends on the content and time as well as learners' varied style of learning, the same learner may prefer inductive teaching for one topic and deductive approach for the other topic. This paper initiates a sample study that is taken for a particular institution, in the particular environment, for the particular batch and particular set of students. The sample data are collected from a classroom by distributing the questionnaire attempted by two different batches of student having questions pertaining to Inquiry based and deductive learning. The system is developed and tested twice after teaching the content using inductive method and implemented using attribute relevance, discriminant rules of class discrimination mining. The results are visualized through bar charts and shows that the two batches of learners of different years have different learning characteristics.
