In this paper we propose a new infrastructure of storage overlay networks (SONs) that connect several distributed internet nodes into an overlay network to provide in-network, aggregated storage. A SON node can encode, recode, and decode data on purpose. The SON improves information availability and security with erasure coding, and improves network efficiency by re-encoding received information. Two application cases of SONs to enhance present cloud storage are demonstrated. By jointly considering both storage and network issues, the proposed network-coded storage system can improve the availability, security and efficiency of contemporary cloud storage systems to a certain extent. © 2017 IEEE.

Cloud computing is a modern paradigm that significantly reduces development, deployment and maintenance cost of software systems. Model Driven Engineering (MDE) is system development approach and considered to be highly supportive for cloud computing due to its proven reusability and portability features. This article comprehensively investigates the application of MDE in cloud computing. To achieve this, Systematic Literature Review (SLR) has been carried out to select and analyze 25 research works published during 2009-2016. Consequently, 16, 2 and 5 research works are identified pertaining to Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) layers respectively. Moreover, 9 MDE-based cloud computing tools are presented. Furthermore, 4 MDE approaches are identified to develop customized abstract models in cloud computing. It is concluded that MDE approaches are mostly applied on SaaS layer applications. Furthermore, it is also analyzed that MDE approaches are highly supportive and suitable for cloud computing.

Today many users with their smart mobile devices enjoy the benefits of broadband internet services. This is primarily enabled by pushing computing, control, data storage and processing into the cloud. However, the cloud encounters growing limitations, such as reduced latency, high mobility, high scalability and real-time execution in order to meet the computing and intelligent networking demands for the next 5G mobile and wireless network. A new paradigm called Fog computing and Networking, or briefly Fog has emerged to resolve these limits. Fog distributes computing, data processing, and networking services closer to the end users. It is an architecture where distributed edge and user devices collaborate with each other and with the clouds to carry out computing, control, networking, and data management tasks. Fog applied in 5G network can significantly improve network performance in terms of spectral and energy efficiency, enable direct device-to-device wireless communications, and support the growing trend of network function virtualization and separation of network control intelligence from radio network hardware. This paper evaluates the quality of cloud and fog computing and networking orchestrated services in 5G mobile and wireless network in terms of energy efficiency.

Cloud computing provides computational resources (processing, storage, software, network) to users in a scalable and dynamic way over the internet. The use of these resources are impacted by issues related to privacy, security and trust. In this sense, this paper presents a trust reputation architecture applied in the cloud computing environment. The reputed trust is based on two trust indicators: objective and subjective ones. The objective trust indicator is based on the historical QoS indicators of a cloud provider. Then, the subjective trust indicator is composed of the users' feedbacks to the cloud providers. In order to evaluate the proposed architecture, simulations were performed using a P2P Network Simulator in order to emulate cloud providers and their clients. The evaluation results show the architecture applicability with low overhead.

The federation of information technology (IT) systems is a common approach to bundle capabilities and get the best results for all participants. Cloud computing and electronic identity (eID) are only two out of many domains, for which federated solutions have been a topic of scientific and corporate interest during the past years. Recently, the H2020 project SUNFISH has introduced a new cloud-federation approach called 'Federation as a Service' (FaaS). FaaS enables secure cloud federations, where data owners remain in full control of their data and workflows. In this paper, we identify shortcomings of the FaaS approach in terms of secure and reliable user authentication. In this sense, data security and protection mechanisms are only as good as the applied authentication measures. We solve this issue by proposing the integration of an existing pan-European federation of national eID systems into FaaS. This increases security guarantees of FaaS by using a trustworthy and liable eID solution that has a strong legal basis in the form of the EU eIDAS Regulation. A first successful implementation and deployment of the proposed solution demonstrates its feasibility and shows the great potential of combining federation solutions from the cloud domain and the eID domain.

With the increasing availability of internet of Things (IoT) devices, and potential applications that make use of data from such devices, there is a need to better identify appropriate data processing techniques that can be applied to this data. The computational complexity of these applications, and the complexity of the requirements on the data processing techniques, often derives from the capabilities of current IoT devices and the need to integrate data streams across multiple IoT devices, which result in larger data sizes and loads on the computing infrastructure. Furthermore, due to the dynamics and uncertainties of edge environments, it is essential that these techniques are capable of adapting across a range of computational and data transfer requirements (such as execution performance) and infrastructure scales (processing nodes, storage needs, network requirements) to carry out a particular analysis task, in response to changing requirements and constraints. Approximate computing offers techniques that can simplify the overall analysis workflow, trading off loss in quality and optimality of the solution with time to reach a particular outcome. These techniques have two main advantages: (i) reduced time to execute a particular data analysis;(ii) reduced requirements on the computational infrastructure (i.e., lower energy, computational resource needs, etc) to carry out such analysis. With data processing capabilities available IoT devices and associated gateway nodes, such approximate computing can be achieved at or close to the network edge. In this paper, we propose in-transit and edge-supported approximation techniques, which can undertake partial/approximate data processing at the data generation/capture or aggregation site, prior to delivery to a cloud data center. We also demonstrate how such an approach can be used in practice by applying it to support energy optimization in built environments (utilizing a combination of sensors and cloud-based data

The aim of this paper is studying how Cloud-Based condition monitoring data centers are designed, applied and controlled. Knowing that every cloud computing application for every industrial field should be designed according to their own manufacturing characteristic. In this paper, proper applications of infrastructure cloud computing technology are applied. Critical facilities like Electrical Power plants have been taken as case studies to apply a remote condition monitoring system for the critical assets using cloud based condition monitoring system for industrial machinery in order to determine the condition of equipment and predict potential problems remotely. The industrial case studies showed in practical ways that the speed of data transfer via the IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) cloud data center is not affected by the monitoring location meanwhile the speed of data transfer depends only on the internet speed of the power station LAN (Local area Network) and the size of the transferred files.

Service Level Agreement (SLA) represents a means of regulating and controlling the interaction between service providers and their customers. In the first part of this paper, we use Bigraphical Reactive Systems (BRS) to model customers, offered services by different providers and the SLA between them. Concretely, we use bigraphs, the static structure of BRS, to model these entities and to describe their relationships. In addition, we propose a set of reaction rules to show the evolution of their states during the different stages of the SLA's lifecycle. In the second part, we apply these models in the domain of cloud computing. Cloud computing architecture is usually represented as a stack of different layers. We show that the proposed models can be applied to any computing model (e.g., Software as a Service, Platform as a Service and Infrastructure as service layer) and they allow describing the SLA across the cloud stack layers. We show also that these models can represent the composition of services from several layers to offer complete solutions to end users.

Telemetry sampling rates from enterprise servers and for IoT asset prognostic monitoring are often constrained by hardware limitations in physical transducers and A/D digitizing firmware, and by hard-coded firmware in data acquisition instrumentation. The sampling restrictions impose challenges in terms of training advanced pattern recognition for prognostic applications such as Prognostic Cyber Security in enterprise and cloud data centers, and prognostic health management for end-customer IoT critical assets. No matter how slow the inherent sampling rate capabilities are for monitored assets, this paper introduces a novel empirical systematic and rigorous process to produce arbitrarily high telemetry sampling densities from assets for which such high telemetry sampling densities are physically and electronically impossible. This capability is achieved with no hardware or firmware modifications in any of the critical assets being monitored, and hence is backward compatible with legacy assets already in operation. © 2017 CSREA Press. internet messenger (IM) has become an important educational technology component in college education, IM makes it possible for students to engage in learning and collaborating at smart virtual class learning (SVCL) using ubiquitous computing. However, the model of IM-based smart virtual class learning using ubiquitous computing and empirical evidence that would favor a broad application to improve engagement and behavior are still limited. In addition, the expectation that IM based SVCL using ubiquitous computing could improve engagement and behavior on smart class cannot be confirmed because the majority of the reviewed studies followed instructions paradigms. This article aims to present the model of IM-based SVCL using ubiquitous computing and showing learners' experiences in improved engagement and behavior for learner-learner and learner-lecturer interactions.
