From 1984, the US has annually conducted the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys to capture either health behaviors, such as drinking or smoking, or health outcomes, including mental, physical, and generic health, of the population. Although this kind of information at a population level, such as US counties, is important for local governments to identify local needs, traditional datasets may take years to collate and to become publicly available. Geocoded social media data can provide an alternative reflection of local health trends. In this work, to predict the percentage of adults in a county reporting "insufficient sleep", a health behavior, and, at the same time, their health outcomes, novel textual and temporal features are proposed. The proposed textual features are defined at mid-level and can be applied on top of various low-level textual features. They are computed via kernel functions on underlying features and encode the relationships between individual underlying features over a population. To further enrich the predictive ability of the health indices, the textual features are augmented with temporal information. We evaluated the proposed features and compared them with existing features using a dataset collected from the BRFSS. Experimental results show that the combination of kernel-based textual features and temporal information predict well both the health behavior (with best performance at rho=0.82) and health outcomes (with best performance at rho=0.78), demonstrating the capability of social media data in prediction of population health indices. The results also show that our proposed features gained higher correlation coefficients than did the existing ones, increasing the correlation coefficient by up to 0.16, suggesting the potential of the approach in a wide spectrum of applications on data analytics at population levels.

The internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way people work, behave, interact, study and believe through the interconnectivity and interoperability of human beings, digital devices and various systems. Nevertheless, the perception of IoT and its impact on the society, remains unexploited to some countries which are reluctant to adapt the technology. This paper investigates the viewpoints of master's program students from East African Community, in Japan, towards the awareness and potential contributions of IoT in their countries. The paper aims at contributing to the inspiration of further researches and studies from the region in the field of IoT technologies.

Greenhouses are examples of smart environments that bring domestic agriculture into urban environments. One way to improve the operations of Greenhouses is applying mechanisms for control and decision on devices of the greenhouse in order to automate its operation. In this context, Wireless Sensors and Actuators Network (WSAN) can be employed to perform such automatized operation in a distributed and timely way. This work proposes a distributed mechanism for decision and control for Greenhouses, called GROWN (GReenhOuses Wireless Networks), that makes use of a WSAN and data gathered from the internet. Tests have shown that as data is not transmitted to a centralized station, there is a gain in the response time, so the decisions on the greenhouse operation are applied sooner, saving time and energy from the network and the greenhouse. GROWN decision-making process builds on an inference method that combines sensing data collected from the monitored environment in real time with forecast data obtained from Web systems, in order to accurately predict the greenhouse conditions. We validated our proposal by performing several tests in a prototype developed by our research group. © 2017 ACM.

In Cloud computing applications, data and computing resources are provided as a service to the clients over the internet. Task scheduling plays a vital role in assigning the tasks to different virtual machines in cloud computing. The ultimate goal of cloud task scheduling is to curtail the makespan. Discrete Symbiotic Organism Search (DSOS) is a metaheuristic algorithm which provides optimal solution to cloud scheduling problems. Local search procedure will move from one solution to another improved solution. In this paper we propose an algorithm named as DSOS with Local search (DSOSLS). In DSOSLS the local search technique has been applied to the solution which is obtained from the DSOS algorithm. DSOSLS algorithm moves the task from the high makespan virtual machine to low makespan virtual machine. The experimental analysis shows that the DSOSLS algorithm reduces the makespan at a higher level.

Right from the invention of World Wide Web (www) by Tim Berners Lee, internet became a platform that has highest impact on people of all walks of life. In fact the world is shrinking and became a small village and virtual platform without which individuals and businesses cannot be assumed now. Of later based on internet a new technology known as cloud computing came into existence. Cloud computing is a new model of computing which helps haring pool of resources in pay per use fashion. The services it bestows include software, platform and infrastructure. Cloud data centres play a vital role in providing storage service to users. The huge computing resources provided by cloud service providers are to be utilized optimally in order to provide sustainable services to users. However, it is a challenging problem to be addressed. Load balancing is one of the techniques employed to optimize resource allocation and ensure high availability and performance of cloud computing. In this project cloud partitioning approach is extended for effective load balancing and resource optimization. Besides the ideal refresh period which determines changes in the state of partitions of data centre for optimized resource utilization. CloudSim is the simulation framework used to build a prototype application for demonstrating the proof of concept. Our results showed that the proposed solution improves performance, throughput and utilization of cloud resources.

Cloud computing provides computational resources (processing, storage, software, network) to users in a scalable and dynamic way over the internet. The use of these resources are impacted by issues related to privacy, security and trust. In this sense, this paper presents a trust reputation architecture applied in the cloud computing environment. The reputed trust is based on two trust indicators: objective and subjective ones. The objective trust indicator is based on the historical QoS indicators of a cloud provider. Then, the subjective trust indicator is composed of the users' feedbacks to the cloud providers. In order to evaluate the proposed architecture, simulations were performed using a P2P Network Simulator in order to emulate cloud providers and their clients. The evaluation results show the architecture applicability with low overhead.

In the real time processing, a new emerging technology where the need of connecting smart devices with cloud through internet has raised. IoT devices processed information is to be stored and accessed anywhere needed with a support of powerful computing performance, efficient storage infrastructure for heterogeneous systems and software which configures and controls these different devices. A lot of challenges to be addressed are listed with this new emerging technology as it needs to be compatible with the upcoming 5G wireless devices too. In this paper, the benefits and challenges of this innovative paradigm along with the areas open to do research are shown.

internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly emerging concept where sensors, actuators and smart devices are often connected to cloud computing systems. Clouds are used in novel scenarios where data produced by large amounts of sensors are processed and often fed back to actuators or smart devices for consumers. Research in IoT Cloud systems addresses questions like how to govern large number of devices. Simulators could help such analysis, but they are usually problematic to be applied in newly emerging domains. In this paper, show how fundamental properties of IoT entities can be represented in a state-of-the-art simulator by implementing a real world meteorological application. We also analyze operating costs of IoT scenarios by introducing a model of pricing schemes of four providers, then compare them by calculating costs of the simulated application. Finally the revealed pricing model is applied in the simulator to enable cost-based investigations of IoT Cloud systems, and the process is exemplified through the meteorological case study.

Network Security is the most demanding domain in the Computer Science field. Network architectures are more vulnerable to malicious attacks. For this reason, updated mechanisms should be applied to network security. The concept of Network Intrusions Detection System helps in identifying the occurrence of malicious activity in a network.
