Based on the description Q-type-2 of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellation and standard Golay-Davis-Jedwab (GDJ) quaternary complementary sequences (CSs), this paper presents a new family of QAM Golay complementary sequences (GCSs), and determines their family size. The proposed QAM GCSs includes the known QAM GCSs from Cases I-III constructions as a special case. It is worthy of mentioning that the family size of new sequences is fairly larger than the one of the known sequences so that the code rate of the code consisting of new sequences is improved, which therefrom results in the increase of number of sub-carriers in OFDM communication systems employing the resultant QAM GCSs. More clearly, in a 64-QAM OFDM communication system whose signals are encoded by QAM GCSs, the number of sub-carriers in this system is at most 16 when the known QAM GCSs from Cases I-III constructions are employed. However, such number can be increased up to 32 when the proposed QAM GCSs are used. Finally, it should be pointed out that the peak envelope power (PEP) upper bounds, educed from the usage of both new and known QAM GCSs in an OFDM communication system, are the same.

This paper studied the dosimetry of patients with cervical cancer using three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). The doses of target areas and the organs at risk (OAR) were studied and analyzed in detail, which will give us a base for clinical choice of cervical cancer radiotherapy technology. Twenty cases of cervical cancer patients were selected randomly, aged from 38 to 65 and the median age was 46 years old. The CT images were obtained by CT and transmitted to the Oncentra planning system, delineated in the clinical target volume (CTV), planning target volume (PTV), and organ at risk(bladder, rectum, femoral head), and designed respectively 3D-CRT and IMRT plans. The prescription doses were 46.80Gy, fractionated doses were 1.8Gy. The PTV dose volume histograms (DVH) and isodose curve were used to evaluate the dosimetry of these two plans with the differences: (1) the conformity index(CI); (2) the homogeneity index(HI); (3) the maximum dose of distribute to the OAR such as bladder, rectum, left and right sides of the femoral head; (4) the percentage volume of the bladder, rectum, left and right sides of the femoral head under radiation at different dose levers. The results indicated that the conformity index of IMRT plans was distinctly superior to the 3D-CRT. IMRT plans distinctly reduced the volumes of the rectum, left and right sides of the femoral head by the high dose levels. IMRT plans had advantages in reducing the high dose area bladder and rectum, femoral head around the radiation volume of a 3D-CRT. It is concluded that patients with cervical cancer received IMRT may diminish the Normal Tissue Complication Probability (NTCP) and severity.

Cellular self-organization in extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex process highly related to ECM proteins, cytokines, growth factors, cell-cell contacts, and mechanical stimuli, and study on the underlying mechanism is vital for rationally tuning the self-organization of cells. Here, we investigate the 3D pattern formation process of vascular mesenchymal cells (VMCs) at the interfaces between hydrogels with different components in a mathematical model. A reaction-diffusion model based on Turing's instability is derived and utilized to simulate the self-organized VMC patterns according to the biochemical interactions of activator, inhibitor and cells. The simulation results show that 3D hollow tubular and spherical structures with large lumen diameters generated around interfacial regions between different hydrogels, which are not observed in a two-dimensional study. The multicellular morphology changes from the branched tubes to the short-length tubes with the variation of parameter values. The short-length tubes also can evolve to hollow sphere-like structures in specific parameter ranges. The hollow structure which emerges is mainly because of the concentration gradients of proteins and cells across the hydrogel interfaces. This study provides flexible predictions, which may be useful for engineering 3D artificial tissue that highly dynamic and variable in terms of their 3D structure, mechanical properties and biochemical microenvironment.

The design of human-computer interface is important and complex. Concerning the Chinese character legibility, three elementary factors are included in this study, namely, age, lighting environment, and font size. 176 subjects divided into three different age groups (19～35, 35～55, above 55) participated in the experiment of recognizing four font sizes (6, 9, 12, 24) in three different lighting environments (300 lx, 100 lx, 0 lx), resulting in 21760 data samples. The analysis of the results shows that: 1) Information-transfer bite-rate B is efficient to evaluate Chinese character legibility. 2) Font size 24 is the best for Chinese character legibility, and size 12 and 9 are acceptable, while size 6 is not suitable. 3) The 100 lx typical bedroom environment and 0 lx dark environment are better than 300 lx typical office environment for Chinese character legibility. 4) The fact that age is a significant factor in all the three lighting environments is manifested by B. B of the younger is about 1～1.2 times of the middle-aged and about 1.1～1.8 times of the senile. 5) No significant correlations are found among the size, age and lighting environments. We hope that the results of our study may provide references for human-computer interface design to some extent.

In embryonic stem cells, many promoters harbor a distinctive chromatin modification patterns that combines the active histone H3K4me3 mark and the repressive H3K27me3 mark. These bivalent domains are considered to play a pivotal role related to pluripotency by maintaining lineage commitment programs in a poised state. Enhancers are long-range regulatory elements that enable precise tissue-specific gene expression patterns during development, which are marked by the presence of H3K4mel. However, how enhancers functional interact with bivalent promoters has remained elusive. Here, we identified thousands of enhancers and bivalent promoters through genome-wide epigenomic analysis in embryonic stem cells and neural progenitor cells. We found that bivalent promoters are significantly proximal to poised enhancers which are distinguished by the enrichment of H3K4mel and the absence of the H3K27ac than active promoters. Upon differentiation from ES cells to NP cells, some de novo formed bivalent promoters enriched in nervous system development are found. We also find distinct classes of bivalent genes are differentially transcribed upon differentiation. Our findings will have implications in understanding the regulatory mechanisms that orchestrate the lineage differentiation process.

Human embryonic stem cell derived cardiomyocytes (hESC-CMs) are well recognized as one of the most important topics in the biological and medical communities. However, related bioinformatics work on hESC-CMs has seldom reported because there are very scarce public hESC-CM expression data and very few samples. Moreover, traditional analysis based on protein protein interactions (PPIs), which are widely adopted in other kinds of species or organs, are used in very few studies as auxiliary tools to reveal partial topological characteristics. However, to our best knowledge, comprehensive investigation of interaction analysis for different hESC-CMs studies have never been reported. In view of these problems, we developed three different measures to conduct the putative protein interaction analysis of a number of hESC-CM studies with two different sets of PPI data. Results of our work gain deeper insight into related gene regulatory mechanisms and biological processes. Significant hESC-CMs with larger Fold Change (FC) values are found to have a larger probability to appear in PPI data. More interactions are observed in gene pairs with larger FC values than those with smaller ones. Significant hESC-CMs with larger FC values do not necessarily have a larger probability to be the hub ones in interaction networks.

Nerve conduction blocking by high frequency biphasic (HFB) electrical stimulations would cause injuries to nerves. This study aimed to investigate whether laser irradiations could reduce this kind of injuries as an assistant method. Compound action potentials (CAPs) were recorded on isolated bullfrog's sciatic nerve before and following HFB electrical stimulations in each experimental trial, and the laser irradiations of 650 nm or 850 nm at various power were applied in testing trials. The parameters of injury rates and effectiveness ratios were computed from the CAPs to identify how many axons were influenced in respect of conductibility and how effective the laser irradiations were for the neural recoveries. The results showed that the laser irradiations of 650 nm and 75 mW reduced nerve injury rates following HFB electrical blocking stimulation and improved neural recovering speed by an average rate of 0.145. With the power of 50 mW, the 650 nm laser irradiation resulted in more significant (P<0.0001) effectiveness ratio than the 850 nm laser irradiation in reducing the nerve injuries. Lasers of different power seemed to act effectively at different irradiating time lengths. The 25 mW laser irradiation displayed the shortest latency to begin to work and the longest effective duration, while the 75 mW laser irradiation exhibited the most significant overall performance. As an assistance method, laser irradiations could effectively reduce the nerve injuries caused by HFB electrical stimulations and would promote the clinical applications of it.

The purposes of this paper are to calculate exactly the mean thickness, plot the thickness maps, and depict the early treatment diabetic retinopathy study (ETDRS) charts for ten intra-retinal layers by spectral domain optical coherence tomography(OCT). Using our previously the reported segmented method with a simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) super-pixels and manifold ranking (SLIC_MR), the ten intra-retinal layers were fast and exactly segmented in 3-D OCT dataset, includes 55 B-scan images from 11 different healthy adult subjects. By our definitions of the sensitivity and specificity, we compared the segmented results with the recent graph-based method for the main layers in dataset. The experimental results demonstrated that the SLIC_MR method outperformed the graph-based method. The thickness maps were plotted in the ten intra-retinal layers and the overall layer, the ETDRS charts were depicted in the 9 sectors of each intra-retinal layer and the overall layer, and the bar graph displayed the mean and standard deviation of macular thickness in 9 sectors for ten retinal layers and the overall layer. The mean thickness of the central foveal area displayed the minimum thickness in layers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the overall, and the maximum thickness in the central foveal area of the 6th layer. Both layers 4 and 5 have the similar mean thickness in each sector.

Radiation treatments are in continuous evolution and the use of increasingly advanced technologies enables personalized treatments. According to this, the work presented is focused on the 3D computed reconstruction of segmented CT images taken from an anthropomorphic phantom (RANDO phantom) using unstructured meshes. This phantom model is used to simulate dose distribution during a beam irradiation with Monte Carlo code. Searching for the most appropriate and rapid methodology for meshing the segmented phantom is the main goal of the present work. The use of different coupled softwares, as image segmentation software or meshing geometry software were necessary. Besides, several FORTRAN routines were coded for conversion formatting to Monte Carlo code and dose calculation. This study has used the last version of MCNP (v.6.1.1) Monte Carlo code to simulate a RANDO phantom irradiation. This new code version presents a new tool to improve geometry description by the importation of meshed models. The generated meshed head model is included in a Monte Carlo model of photon beam transport emitted by a medical LINear ACcelerator (LinAc). Results have been compared with values obtained by experimental measurements in different positions inside the phantom using High-Sensitivity MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) dosimeters. Monte Carlo results are in good agreement with experimental values, which demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the Monte Carlo method to estimate dose. The innovation of using meshed geometries in these calculations, shows an important advantage defining complex geometries as human anatomy.
