This paper presents a method for automatic temporal location and recognition of human actions. The data are obtained from a motion capture system. They are then animated and optical flow vectors are subsequently calculated. The system performs in two phases. The first phase employs nearest neighbor search to locate an action along the temporal axis taking into account both the angle and length of the vectors, while the second classifies the action using artificial neural networks. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) plays a significant role in discarding correlated flow vectors. We perform a statistical analysis in order to achieve an efficient, adaptive and targeted PCA. This will greatly improve the configuration of flow vectors which we have used to train both the locating and classifying systems. Experimental results confirm the significance of our proposed method for locating and classifying a specific action from among a sequential combination of actions.

This study presents a revolutionary computer-assisted surgery planning and simulating system under multimedia environment for the internal fixation operative of calcaneal collapse. This system uses the full-scale 3D reverse engineering technique in designing and developing preoperative planning modules for the internal fixation operative of calcaneal collapse. The planning system not only presents a full-sized three-dimensional image of the calcaneus, but it also provides detailed interior measurements of the calcaneus from various cutting planes to obtain sectional image. This study applied multimedia user interface to integrate different software's function to a functional integration surgical planning system. These functions include 3-D image model capturing, cutting, moving, rotating and measurement for relevant foot anatomy can integrated as the user function, in the mean time the planning process can record by this system for further study and discussion. Furthermore, for the system being a computer based with multimedia user interface, surgeons can utilize it as part of their preoperative planning in searching for the best and most efficient operative procedure. This system also has databank that can update and extend, will provide the clinical cases to different users for experience learning.

Developments of many cardiovascular problems have been shown to have a close relationship with arterial flow conditions. An ultrasound-based particle image velocimetry technique (Echo PIV) was recently developed to measure multi-component velocity vectors and local shear rates in arteries and opaque fluid flows by identifying and tracking flow tracers (ultrasound contrast microbubbles) within these flow fields. To improve the measurement accuracy, sub-pixel calculation method was adopted in this paper to maximize the ultrasound RF signal and B mode image correlation accuracy and increase the image spatial resolution. This algorithm is employed in processing both computer-generated particle image patterns and the B-mode images of microbubbles in rotating flows obtained by a high frame rate (up to 1000 frames per second) ultrasound imaging system. The results show the correlation of particle patterns and individual flow vector quality are improved and the overall flow mappings are also improved significantly. This would help the Echo PIV system to provide better multi-component velocity accuracy.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), to observe the changes of cerebral functional cortex in prelingual deaf singers for Chinese sign language(CSL). Materials and methods: 14 prelingual deaf singers (PDS) (group I), 13 hearing non-signers (HnS) (group II), 11 hearing native signers (HNS) (group III) and 12 hearing late signers (HLS) (group IV) were scanned on 1.5T MRI scanner while they observed and imitated CSL. Then the AFNI software was applied to find the areas of activation and calculate the volume across subjects. Results: During observing and imitating CSL, the activated areas in all groups include bilateral middle frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, superior parietal lobule, cuneate lobe, fusiform gyrus and lingual gurus. The activation of bilateral inferior frontal gyrus were found in group I , III and IV, but no activation in group II. The activation of bilateral superior temporal gyrus and inferior parietal lobule were found in group I and III, but no activation in others. The volumes of bilateral inferior frontal gyrus in group I were greater than those in group III and IV. The volumes of bilateral superior temporal gyrus in group I were greater than those in group III. The volumes of bilateral superior parietal lobule, cuneate lobe and lingual gurus in group I were greater than those in other groups. The activated areas during imitating CSL were more than those during observing CSL. The volumes of bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, superior parietal lobule and left middle temporal gyrus in imitating task were greater than those in observing task in group I . There were no statistical differences about the volume in the symmetrical functional cortex in all groups during observing and imitating tasks. Conclusion : The cortex in PDS had occurred reorganization, after losing their auditory and learning the CSL. In this paper, we describe four important indirect methods which be used to extract the Fetal Electrocardiogram (FECG) signal from an ECG recorded on the mother's abdomen. These methods include the following ones: Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) method, Wavelet Based methods and Adaptive Filtering method. The mentioned methods use signal processing techniques for extracting FECG from Abdominal Electrocardiogram (AECG). We have explained advantages and disadvantages of each method The methods have also applied on both synthetic and real ECG signals. Efficiencies of the methods compared together based on three important criterions and results are stated and best method based on three criterions is selected.

Recently fluorescence tomography is developed as a promising way for non-invasive molecular-based imaging, especially for small animals. Based on a certain forward model with known optical properties, the distribution of fluorescence parameter could be estimated by proper inversion techniques. In this work, a novel fast inversion algorithm is applied to a linear scheme, which is generated by solving the diffusion equations with finite element method. The proposed reconstruction algorithm consists of a pre-iteration step executed off-line and an on-line post-processing step. In the off-line step the approximated value of generalized inverse is obtained by a iteration method of two-order expression. In the on-line step when the updated measurements come, a rough distribution of the required fluorescence parameter is firstly estimated by a matrix-vector multiplication, and then several steps of Landweber iteration are applied, which reduces the influence of the noisy measurements and integrates a priori knowledge about the unknown values. Numerical simulations of 2-D geometry model show that the algorithm could well estimate the spatial distribution of the fluorescent yield. © 2008 IEEE.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in clinical settings to investigate neurophysiology. Since EEG signals contain a wealth of information about brain functions, there are many approaches in analyzing EEG signals with spectral techniques. We have used short time Fourier transform (STFT) at 19 channel's of EEG for IO Autism disorders (6-11 years old) and 7 age matched control subjects. The values were assessed with variance analysis. Results are shown that beta band (14-34Hz) has 82.4% discriminate between two groups. Coherence values at between 112 pairs of 19 channels EEG are shown there are abnormalities connectivity in parietal lobe and temporal lobe and connectivity between these lobes and central lobe. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel color texture classification approach is introduced and applied to computer-assisted grading of follicular lymphoma from whole-slide tissue samples. The digitized tissue samples of follicular lymphoma were classified into histological grades under a statistical framework. The proposed method classifies the image either into low or high grades based on the amount of cytological components. To further discriminate the lower grades into low and mid grades, we proposed a novel color texture analysis approach. This approach modifies the gray level cooccurrence matrix method by using a nonlinear color quantization with self-organizing feature maps (SOFMs). This is particularly useful for the analysis of H&E stained pathological images whose dynamic color range is considerably limited. Experimental results on real follicular lymphoma images demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the gray level based texture analysis.
