A new texture classification approach by multiresolution character and fuzzy decision is proposed. The multiresolution character of the texture is extracted by a completed tree-structured wavelet transform. In the feature classification process, the advantages of the statistical and fuzzy method are combined by introducing the feature similarity measure and classifying the samples by fuzzy decision of the similarity values. The introduced similarity measure reflects the uncertainty of the feature values made by the difference between samples or made by random noise, and the proposed approach can give a satisfactory classification results. The texture classification experiment gives its effectiveness.

Neurologists defined movement patterns to aid the diagnosis of different diseases, especially Parkinson's disease. Subtle changes should be detected in the movement patterns of persons to aid the early diagnosis and to qualify the efficiency of medication. Human visual analysis is unable to detect subtle changes in the performance of a person. We have been using image-based motion analyzers to record the movement patterns. The applied signalprocessing evaluates the symmetry, periodicity and-if applicable-also the frequency and amplitude of the movements.
One of the important problems in biomedicalengineering is the difficult task of the biological signals recognition. In order to provide a convenient description of the biological signals, useful to their classificati...

An optimal method for estimating motion in ultrasound B-mode images is presented. Such estimation is often needed for diagnostic purposes to distinguish regions of the image with differing motion. The block matching technique is adapted to the nature and statistics of these images, using maximum, likelihood (ML) estimation. In application to echocardiographic images, this approach is seen to give better results than standard block matching, without significantly increasing the computational complexity of the algorithm.

The nineteenth biennial international Conference on Information processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI) was held July 11–15, 2005 in Glenwood Springs, CO, USA on the Spring Valley campus of the Colorado Mountain College. Following the successful meeting in beautiful Ambleside in England, this year’s conference addressed important recent developments in a broad range of topics related to the acquisition, analysis and application of biomedicalimages. Interest in IPMI has been steadily growing over the last decade. This is p- tially due to the increased number of researchers entering the ?eld of medical imagingasaresultoftheWhitakerFoundationandtherecentlyformedNational Institute of biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. This year, there were 245 full manuscripts submitted to the conference which was twice the number s- mitted in 2003 and almost four times the number of submissions in 2001. Of these papers, 27 were accepted as oral presentations, and 36 excellent subm- sions that could not be accommodated as oral presentations were presented as posters. Selection of the papers for presentation was a di?cult task as we were unable to accommodate many of the excellent papers submitted this year. All accepted manuscripts were allocated 12 pages in these proceedings.
