The wireless sensor network (WSN) is a promising technology for monitoring infrastructures, industrial structures, home security, industrial security, elderly people, and so on. An attractive characteristic of the WSN is to be easily installed to the conventional places by using the battery driven sensor nodes. The equipment cost is rather cheap since the heavy constructing work for wiring the power rails is not needed. On the other hand, the management cost to change the batteries attached to many sensor nodes may be large. Conventional researches have reduced the power consumption of the WSN, i.e. extended the battery life, to reduce such management cost. Some of them have attempted to make the sensor node stay at the standby mode as much as possible, and to reduce the standby power consumption. In contrast to reduce the standby power, we have proposed the sensor node that completely eliminates the standby power consumption. However, the proposed sensor node wakes up from the status without any power, while the conventional node wakes up from the status with some power even if the standby current is very small. That is, the wake-up time of the proposed sensor node may become longer than the conventional node. The longer the wake-up time, the larger the power consumption. This time duration may affect to the power consumption of the WSN when using the proposed sensor nodes. This paper extends the traditional equations for the battery life estimation to our sensor node in order to perform an initial trade-off quickly by using simple equations in an early stage of the development. The estimation calculates the battery life considering the wakeup time by using the measured parameters. As a result of the estimation, it is shown that the our proposal can realize the attractive WSN applications with a long battery life by greatly reducing the power consumption compared with the conventional sensor nodes. © 2016 IEEE.

Processing large volumes of data to drive their core business has been the primary objective of many firms and scientific applications in these days. Cloud computing being a large-scale distributed computing paradigm can be used to cater for the needs of data intensive applications. There are various approaches for managing the workload on a data intensive cloud. Live migration of a virtual machine is the most prominent paradigm. Existing approaches to live migration use network attached storage where just the run time state needs to be transferred. Live migration of virtual machines with local persistent storage has been shown to have performance advantages like security, availability and privacy. This paper presents an optimised approach for migration of a virtual machine along with its local storage by considering the locality of storage access. Count map combined with a restricted block transfer mechanism is used to minimise the downtime and overhead. The solution proposed is tested by various parameters like bandwidth, write access patterns and threshold. Results show the improvement in downtime and reduction in overhead. High-speed interconnects (e.g. InfiniBand) have been widely deployed on modern HPC clusters. With the emergence of HPC in the cloud, high-speed interconnects have paved their way into the cloud with recently introduced Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) technology, which is able to provide efficient sharing of high-speed interconnect resources and achieve near-native I/O performance. However, recent studies have shown that SR-IOV-based virtual networks prevent virtual machine migration, which is an essential virtualization capability towards high availability and resource provisioning. Although several initial solutions have been pro- posed in the literature to solve this problem, our investigations show that there are still many restrictions on these proposed approaches, such as depending on specific network adapters and/or hypervisors, which will limit the usage scope of these solutions on HPC environments. In this paper, we propose a high-performance virtual machine migration framework for MPI applications on SR-IOV enabled InfiniBand clusters. Our proposed method does not need any modification to the hypervisor and InfiniBand drivers and it can efficiently handle virtual machine (VM) migration with SR-IOV IB device. Our evaluation results indicate that the proposed design is able to not only achieve fast VM migration speed but also guarantee the high performance for MPI applications during the migration in the HPC cloud. At the application level, for NPB LU benchmark running inside VM, our proposed design is able to completely hide the migration overhead through the computation and migration overlapping. Furthermore, our proposed design shows good scaling when migrating multiple VMs.

Mobile cloud computing provides a novel e-commerce mode for organizations without any upfront. investment. Since cloud computing uses distributed resources in open environment, it is important to provide secure keys to share the data for developing cloud computing applications. To ensure a correctness of users' data in the cloud, we propose an effective and secure distributed model including a Self-Proxy Server (SPS) with self-created algorithm. The model resolves a communication bottleneck due to re-encryption of a shared data in the cloud whenever users are revoked. It offers to reduce security risks and protect their resources because a distributed SPS dynamically interacts with Key Manager (KM) when the mobile users take on cloud services. This paper presents a comprehensive mobile cloud design which provides an effective and secure cloud computing services on mobile devices.

The new challenging era of scientific data management in the coming decade named "Big Data" requires giant complexes for distributed computing and corresponding grid-cloud internet services. Known common approaches to software reliability based on the probability theory or on considering software as an open non-equilibrium dynamic system cannot conform to advanced grid-cloud software management systems. Therefore to provide the optimality and reliability of such sophisticated systems we choose the imitative simulation method oriented on a knowledge of dynamics of the system functioning. A new grid and cloud service simulation system was developed in the JINR Dubna laboratory of information technologies which focused on improving the efficiency and reliability of the grid-cloud systems development by using work quality indicators of some real system to design and predict its evolution. For these purposes the simulation program is combined with real monitoring system of the grid cloud service through a special database. Some examples of the program applications to simulate a sufficiently general cloud structure, which can be used for more common purposes, are given.

The rapid development of the latest distributed computing paradigm, i. e., cloud computing, generates a highly fragmented cloud market composed of numerous cloud providers and offers tremendous parallel computing ability to handle big data problems. One of the biggest challenges in multiclouds is efficient workflow scheduling. Although the workflow scheduling problem has been studied extensively, there are still very few primal works tailored for multicloud environments. Moreover, the existing research works either fail to satisfy the quality of service (QoS) requirements, or do not consider some fundamental features of cloud computing such as heterogeneity and elasticity of computing resources. In this paper, a scheduling algorithm, which is called multiclouds partial critical paths with pretreatment (MCPCPP), for big data workflows in multiclouds is presented. This algorithm incorporates the concept of partial critical paths, and aims to minimize the execution cost of workflow while satisfying the defined deadline constraint. Our approach takes into consideration the essential characteristics of multiclouds such as the charge per time interval, various instance types from different cloud providers, as well as homogeneous intrabandwidth vs. heterogeneous interbandwidth. Various types of workflows are used for evaluation purpose and our experimental results show that the MCPCPP is promising.

The increasingly important data-intensive scientific discovery presents a critical question to the high performance computing (HPC) community-how to efficiently support these growing scientific big data applications with HPC systems that are traditionally designed for big compute applications? The conventional HPC systems are computing-centric and designed for computation-intensive applications. Scientific big data applications have growlingly different characteristics compared to big compute applications. These scientific applications, however, will still largely rely on HPC systems to be solved. In this research, we try to answer this question with a rethinking of HPC system architecture. We study and analyze the potential of a new decoupled HPC system architecture for data-intensive scientific applications. The fundamental idea is to decouple conventional compute nodes and dynamically provision as data processing nodes that focus on data processing capability. We present studies and analyses for such decoupled HPC system architecture. The current results have shown its promising potential. Its data-centric architecture can have an impact in designing and developing future HPC systems for growingly important data-intensive scientific discovery and innovation. © 2016 IEEE.

Discrete Event Simulation is a widely used technique that is used to model and analyze complex systems in many fields of science and engineering. The increasingly large size of simulation models poses a serious computational challenge, since the time needed to run a simulation can be prohibitively large. For this reason, Parallel and Distributes Simulation techniques have been proposed to take advantage of multiple execution units which are found in multicore processors, cluster of workstations or HPC systems. The current generation of HPC systems includes hundreds of thousands of computing nodes and a vast amount of ancillary components. Despite improvements in manufacturing processes, failures of some components are frequent, and the situation will get worse as larger systems are built. In this paper we describe FT-GAIA, a software-based fault-tolerant extension of the GAIA/ART` IS parallel simulation middleware. FT-GAIA transparently replicates simulation entities and distributes them on multiple execution nodes. This allows the simulation to tolerate crash-failures of computing nodes;furthermore, FT-GAIA offers some protection against Byzantine failures since synchronization messages are replicated as well, so that the receiving entity can identify and discard corrupted messages. We provide an experimental evaluation of FT-GAIA on a running prototype. Results show that a high degree of fault tolerance can be achieved, at the cost of a moderate increase in the computational load of the execution units.
