The paper deals with the attempt to guarantee real-time services over TCP/IP. The scenario taken into consideration is a distributedcomputing environment where producer and consumer processes feature real time constraints and the communication between them is realised by a LAN based on TCP/IP protocols. The lack of determinism in the communication of this suite of protocols is the reason of the proposal of a real time access protocol. This protocol is implemented by a Java-based middleware between TCP/IP and user's real time applications. In order to introduce more determinism in the execution of the Java code, the PERC Real-Time Java Virtual Machine has been used. The paper focuses on the description of the centralised access protocol and its performance evaluation using the real-time PERC Virtual Machine.

The omnipresence of the Internet and the World Wide Web (Web) via phone lines, cable-TV, power lines, and wireless RF devices has created an inexpensive media for telemonitoring and remotely controlling distributed electronic appliances. The great variety of potential benefits of aggregating and connecting embedded systems over the Internet is matched by the currently unsolved problem of how to design, test, maintain, and evolve such heterogeneous, collaborative systems. Recently, component-oriented software development has shown great potential for cutting production costs and improving the maintainability of systems. We discuss component-oriented engineering of embedded control software in the light of emerging requirements of distributed, net-centric systems. Our approach is baed on applying the graphical specification language SDL for composing complex networks of embedded software components. From the SDL specification, we generate internet-aware connector components to local embedded controller networks. The described research is carried out in a collaborative effort between industry and academia.

Flexible report generation is a typical problem for database applications in business, management and administration. The subject of the paper is the new system developed at Tomsk State University and Sibgeoinformatics Ltd. The system is targeted to small enterprises and offices. It can produce sophisticated ready-to-use reports, which could be created and modified easily without the necessity for the user to make routine work and learn much about SQL queries. As a result, the development of a report is focused on describing tables with columns/rows and sub-columns/sub-rows, rules of data selection and summarising for the report, particularly, table or column/row, and formatting the report in the destination document. The distinctive features of the system are: an XML-based report definition language; report interpreter, independent of data source and destination; adjustable data interface tested with popular data sources (MS Excel, Oracle, MS Access) and report destinations (MS Excel, MS Word); WYSIWYG report description editor (under construction); ability to describe multi-dimensional tables in the report; ability to create tables with nested columns and rows; a wide set of traditional data selectors, statistics, functions, and expressions; usual set of sorting and formatting features; performing optimisation of SQL code by minimisation of selection conditions and splitting or joining SQL queries.

This paper describes COBOL Script, a Web-oriented script language developed by Hitachi. COBOL Script includes the following features: (1) The language specifications, which consist of functions required for Web computing, are a subset of COBOL85, the most frequently used programming language in business information systems. (2) COBOL Script supports decimal arithmetic functions that have the same precision as in standard COBOL85 on mainframe computers. (3) Efficient implementation was based on analysis of the pros and cons of the COBOL processing system. Using COBOL Script, users can: (1) Process applications requiring high precision, such as account-related applications, over the Web. (2) Use a test debugger and a Coverage Function with COBOL Script for large-scale development projects. (3) Use Japanese in programs. (4) Achieve good run-time performance.
