Describes MW (Master-Worker) - a software framework that allows users to quickly and easily parallelize scientific computations using the master-worker paradigm on the Computational Grid. MW provides both a "top-level" interface to application software and a "bottom-level" interface to existing Grid computing toolkits. Both interfaces are briefly described. We conclude with a case study, where the necessary Grid services are provided by the Condor high-throughput computing system, and the MW-enabled application code is used to solve a combinatorial optimization problem of unprecedented complexity.

Some computational grid applications have very large resource requirements and need simultaneous access to resources from more than one parallel computer. Current scheduling systems do not provide mechanisms to gain such simultaneous access without the help of human administrators of the computer systems. In this work, we propose and evaluate several algorithms for supporting advanced reservation of resources in supercomputing scheduling systems. These advanced reservations allow users to request resources from scheduling systems at specific times. We find that the wait times of applications submitted to the queue increases when reservations are supported and the increase depends on how reservations are supported. Further, we find that the best performance is achieved when we assume that applications can be terminated and restarted, backfilling is performed, and relatively accurate run-time predictions are used.

In this paper we study the suitability of the CORBA Event Service as a reliable message delivery mechanism. We first show that products built to the CORBA Event Service specification will not guarantee against loss of messages or guarantee order. This is not surprising, as the CORBA Event Service specification does not deal with Quality of Service (QoS) and monitoring issues. The CORBA Notification Service, although it provides much of the QoS features, may not be an option. Therefore, we examine application-level reliability schemes to build a reliable communication means over the existing CORBA Event Service. Our end-to-end reliability schemes are applicable to management applications where state resynchronization is possible and sufficient. The reliability schemes proposed provide resilience in the face of failures of the supplier, consumer, and the Event Service processes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Lack of automatic mapping techniques is a significant hurdle in obtaining high performance for general purpose computing on reconfigurable hardware. In this paper, we develop techniques for mapping loop computations from applications onto high performance pipelined configurations. Loop statements with generalized directed acyclic graph dependencies are mapped onto multiple pipeline segments. Each pipeline segment is executed for a fixed number of iterations before the hardware is reconfigured at runtime to execute the next segment. The reconfiguration cost is amortized over the multiple iterations of the execution of the loop statements. This alleviates the bottleneck of high reconfiguration over- heads in current architectures. The paper describes heuristic techniques to construct pipeline configurations which have reduced total execution time including the runtime reconfiguration overheads. The performance benefits which can be achieved using our approach are illustrated by mapping example application loop onto Virtex series FPGA from Xilinx. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Describes an approach to building a distributed software component system for scientific and engineering applications that is based on representing Computational Grid services as application-level software components. These Grid services provide tools such as registry and directory services, event services and remote component creation. While a service-based architecture for grids and other distributed systems is not new, this framework provides several unique features. First, the public interfaces to each software component are described as XML documents. This allows many adaptors and user interfaces to be generated from the specification dynamically. Second, this system is designed to exploit the resources of existing Grid infrastructures like Globus and Legion, and commercial Internet frameworks like e-speak. Third, and most important, the component-based design extends throughout the system. Hence, tools such as application builders, which allow users to select components, start them on remote resources, and connect and execute them, are also interchangeable software components. Consequently, it is possible to build distributed applications using a graphical "drag-and-drop" interface, a Web-based interface, a scripting language like Python, or an existing tool such as Matlab.

In many application domains, the distributed object computing (DOC) middleware is responsible for dispatching upcalls to one or more application objects when events or requests arrive from clients. Implementing efficient, predictable, and scalable middleware dispatching mechanisms is hard and implementing them for multi-threaded systems is even harder. In particular dispatching mechanisms must be prepared to dispatch upcalls to multiple objects, to handle recursive requests originated from application-provided upcalls, and must often collaborate with the application to control object life-cycle. In our DOC middleware research we have implemented many dispatching mechanisms that repeatedly apply common solutions to solve the challenges outlined above. Moreover, we have discovered that the forces constraining dispatching mechanisms often differ slightly thereby requiring alternative solutions. This paper presents two contributions to the design and implementation of efficient, predictable, scalable and flexible DOC middleware and applications. First, it shows how patterns can be applied to the object-oriented systems to capture key design and performance characteristics of proven dispatching mechanisms. Second it presents a pattern language that describes successful solutions that are appropriate for key dispatching challenges that arise in various real-time DOC middleware and applications.

An increasing number of applications are being developed using distributed object computing middleware, such as CORBA. Many of these applications require the underlying middleware, operating systems, and networks to provide end-to-end quality of service (QoS) support to enhance their efficiency, predictability, scalability, and fault tolerance. The Object Management Group (OMG), which standardizes CORBA, has addressed many of these application requirements in the Real-time CORBA and Fault-Tolerant CORBA specifications. We provide four contributions to the study of fault-tolerant CORBA middleware for performance-sensitive applications. First, we provide an overview of the Fault Tolerant CORBA specification. Second, we describe a framework called DOORS, which is implemented as a CORBA service to provide end-to-end application-level fault tolerance. Third, we outline how the DOORS' reliability and fault-tolerance model has been incorporated into the standard OMG Fault-tolerant CORBA specification. Finally, we outline the requirements for CORBA ORB core and higher-level services to support the Fault Tolerant CORBA specification efficiently.

The importance of large-scale electrical business processing is increasing today as recent Internet technologies build on the basic infrastructure. Simply integrating existing technologies and resources to form a platform that satisfies large-scale electrical business processing requirements is nor enough, however. Legion is a wide-area distributed object system that offers mechanisms for describing, creating, and managing objects in a large-scale, heterogeneous, distributed computing environment. Its original design objective was to build a global virtual-computer system that uses Legion as its operating system for compute-intensive applications. The paper introduces our efforts to extend the Legion system into a backbone that supports business processing with consistent resource representations, identical service interfaces, and an easy-to-use development environment. We focus on a framework that supports CORBA from within the Legion system.

Discusses dynamic performance optimization mechanisms for parallel object-oriented database programming languages. When a large number of objects are distributed on a distributed-memory parallel processor, referencing a remote object requires inter-processor communication. If those objects are not allocated properly, it may cause total performance degradation. When those objects are allocated with a biased distribution among the processing elements, it may cause a load imbalance. However, the information necessary for relocating objects must be obtained at run time, since the number of objects on a processor and the topology of the objects in a database are unknown at compilation time. This paper proposes a new approach to dynamic performance optimization method, and evaluates the results through simulation tests.
