Today, most graphics applications run as local stand-alone programs with transient construction of the data structures used to represent the graphics data. A number of approaches to communicate molecular graphics data over the World Wide Web based on standardized file formats which can be recognized by Web browsers or helper applications have been reported. In a world where most research groups are engaged in remote collaboration, the lack of the possibility of bidirectional synchronous communication is difficult to accept. In this work, we will present a new data communication paradigm using a portable data structure which is based on an underlying object-oriented molecular graphics library, which represents the basis for a Web based collaborative engineering environment allowing the sharing of windows containing two- and three-dimensional information in real time. © 1999, Springer-Verlag. Transaction management is required to maintain data consistency in any system with concurrent access to its information. The Object Transaction Service (OTS) is a CORBA service that brings transactional semantics to distributed object oriented applications. We report our experience of developing a prototype using OTS. We present results from our scaling experiments and analyze the overheads incurred by the components of an OTS based distributed transaction. We also highlight issues that need to be addressed if OTS is to be used in large distributed systems such as those in Boeing.

Electronic commerce on the Internet is evolving from simple customer-to-business interactions, like online shopping, to complex business-to-business extranet applications. These applications typically require back-office processing in two or more organisations. CORBA provides abstractions that make it a good technology for building such applications. Transactions are a well known technique for ensuring the overall consistency of system state in the presence of the concurrent access and occasional failure that are likely in extranet applications. The use of CORBA transactions for supporting extranet applications is complicated by the use of firewalls. Conventional firewall technology operates by restricting access based on host address and port number, and does not suit CORBA, which abstracts away from these concepts. The paper describes the issues involved and shows how they can be addressed using an advanced CORBA object gateway.

Real-time image processing applications have tremendous computational workloads and I/O throughput requirements. Operation in mobile, portable devices poses stringent resource limitations (size, weight, and power). The SIMD Pixel Processor (SIMPil) has been designed at Georgia Tech to address these problems. In SIMPil, an image sensor array (focal plane) is integrated on top of a SIMD computing layer, where processing elements (PEs) are connected in a toms. A prototype processing element has been implemented in 0.8 gm CMOS technology. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the SIMPil design on a set of important image applications. A target SIMPil system is described, which is capable of operating in the Tops/see range in Gigascale technology. Simulation results indicate sustained operation throughput in the range of 100-1000 Gops/see. These results support the design choices and suggest that more complex, multistage applications can be implemented to execute at real-time frame rates. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

We propose a graph-based model, with a simulation, for the mobile agents to evolve over the Internet. Based on the concepts of Food Web (or Food Chain), one of the natural laws that we may use besides neural networks and genetic algorithms, we define an agent niche overlap graph and agent evolution states for the distributed computation of mobile agent evolution. The proposed computation model can be used in distributed Internet applications such as commerce programs, intelligent Web searching engine, and others.

Researchers and practitioners in the area of parallel and distributed computing have been lacking a portable, flexible and robust distributed instrumentation system. We present the Baseline Reduced Instrumentation System Kernel (BRISK) that we have developed as a part of a real-time system instrumentation and performance visualization project. The design is based on a simple distributed instrumentation system model for flexibility and extensibility. The basic implementation poses minimalistic system requirements and achieves high performance. We show evaluations of BRISK using two distinct configurations: one emphasizes isolated simple performance metrics; and the other BRISK's operation on distributed applications, its built-in clock synchronization and dynamic on-line sorting algorithms.

Building dependable distributed systems using ad hoc methods is a challenging task. Without proper support, an application programmer must face the daunting requirement of having to provide fault tolerance at the application level, in addition to dealing with the complexities of the distributed application itself. This approach requires a deep knowledge of fault tolerance on the part of the application designer, and has a high implementation cost. What is needed is a systematic approach to providing dependability to distributed applications. Proteus, part of the AQuA architecture, fills this need and provides facilities to make a standard distributed CORBA application dependable, with minimal changes to an application. Furthermore, it permits applications to specify, either directly or via the Quality Objects (QuO) infrastructure, the level of dependability they expect of a remote object, and will attempt to configure the system to achieve the requested dependability level. Our previous papers have focused on the architecture and implementation of Proteus. This paper describes how to construct dependable applications using the AQuA architecture, by describing the interface that a programmer is presented with and the graphical monitoring facilities that it provides.

With the increasing number of scientific applications manipulating huge amounts of data, effective data management is an increasingly important problem. Unfortunately, so far the solutions to this data management problem either require deep understanding of specific storage architectures and file layouts (as in high-performance file systems) or produce unsatisfactory I/O performance in exchange for ease-of-use and portability (as in relational DBMSs). In this paper we present a new environment which is built around an active meta-data management system (MDMS). The key components of our three-tiered architecture are user application, the MDMS, and a hierarchical storage system (HSS). Our environment overcomes the performance problems of pure database-oriented solutions, while maintaining their advantages in terms of ease-of-use and portability. The high levels of performance are achieved by the MDMS, with the aid of user-specified directives. Our environment supports a simple, easy-to-use yet powerful user interface, leaving the task of choosing appropriate I/O techniques to the MDMS. We discuss the importance of an active MDMS and show how the three components, namely application, the MDMS, and the HSS, fit together. We also report performance numbers from our initial implementation and illustrate that significant improvements are made possible without undue programming effort.

Electronic commerce shall provide a contract support system for its subjects with a credential in distributed computing. The contract support system is a fair exchange system of a package of business items between two parties, a merchant and a buyer. In this paper, based on the CORBA security service specification which OMG defined, we propose the fair contract support system for subjects of electronic commerce, providing the mutual authentication and the label-based authorization. This proposed system, by Kerberos for the authentication and the authenticated key exchange, assures not only the identification of a partner but also the confidence of the origin of the business item for contracts between subjects of electronic commerce. Since our deployed Kerberos is extended to the mutual authentication service based on distributed object space, it is efficient for security administration to manage the information such as key management in the distributed computing.

According to today's best projections, petaFLOP/s computing platforms will combine deep memory hierarchies in both latency and bandwidth with a need for many-thousand-fold parallelism. Unless effective parallel programs are prepared in advance, much of the promise of the first year or two of operation for these systems may be lost. We introduce a candidate for a portable petaFLOP/s programming model that can enable these important early application programs to be developed while, at the same time, permitting these same applications to run efficiently on the most capable computing systems now available. An MPI-based model is portable, but its programming paradigm ignores the potential benefits of hardware support for shared memory within each network node. A threads-based model cannot directly cope with the distributed nature of the memory over the network. Therefore, a new, portable programming model is needed. The shared memory programming model dramatically simplifies the expression of dynamic load balancing strategies for irregular algorithms. The main strategy is a transparent self-scheduled task list performed in parallel so long as specified data-dependent conditions are met. The model used is a cluster of multiprocessor distributed shared memory machines with network-attached disks. Our experimental run-time system allows the programmer to view this computing platform as a single machine with a four-stage memory hierarchy, consisting of coherent processor cache, non-coherent local shared memory, global shared memory, plus a global disk file system.
