Standard client-server workflow management systems have an intrinsic scalability limitation: the central server is a bottleneck for large scale applications. It is also a single fault point that may disable the whole system. We propose a fully distributed architecture for workflow management systems. It is based on the idea that the case (an instance of the process) migrates from host to host, according to the process definition specification, as the corresponding activities are executed. This basic architecture is improved so that other requirements for Workflow Management Systems, besides scalability, are also contemplated. Recently proposed view maintenance algorithms tackle the problem of concurrent data updates happening at different autonomous information systems (ISs), whereas the EVE (Evolvable View Environment) system addresses the maintenance of a data warehouse (DW) after IS schema changes. The concurrency of schema changes and data updates still remains an unexplored problem, however. This paper provides a solution that guarantees concurrent view definition evolution and view extent maintenance of a DW defined over distributed ISs. For this problem, we introduce a framework called SDCC (Schema change and Data update Concurrency Control) system. SDCC integrates existing algorithms designed to address view maintenance subproblems (such as view extent maintenance after IS data updates, view definition evolution after IS schema changes, and view extent adaptation after view definition changes) into one system by providing protocols that enable them to correctly co-exist and collaborate. SDCC tracks any potential faulty updates of the DW caused by conflicting concurrent IS changes, and compensates for such conflicting updates by a local correction strategy called local compensation.

Investigates the use of a multi-view virtual memory (MVM) in providing efficient locking services for transaction processing or database systems. The locking granularity is customizable by applications and, furthermore, the locking granularities for read and write operations may differ. The system provides for the enforcement of access control protocols on units of a memory region through finite state machine (FSM) specification. The data units can vary in size from one memory region to another. Threads executing transactions do not explicitly request locks on data items-they simply access the data items, while locking is represented through state transitions and is performed automatically. Only when a thread is suspended are the state changes communicated to the software lock manager. The context switching overhead is thus reduced. Synchronization of threads is possible within a single task or across tasks. Any synchronization protocol that can be represented by an FSM is supported by the MVM system. This paper describes how MVM supports sophisticated locking in which the locking granularities for read and write operations differ. The benefits gained using such locking, which are expressed in terms of throughput, are investigated using a simulation study.

Effective analysis and evolution of existing distributed software systems rely to great an extent on the ability to recognise implemented executable components, particularly their constituent modules. Traditionally, this information is obtained via manual examination of configuration files and the source code directory hierarchy. However both types of artifact are limited in distinguishing which modules are used exclusively by each executable component. This exclusivity distinction is important in that it helps to understand the components' unique functionalities and their potential runtime behaviour. This paper presents a module classification technique that can facilitate automatic recognition of executable component modules in a distributed system. In contrast to existing approaches, the technique explicitly distinguishes component exclusive modules from modules shared by multiple components. The paper illustrates the benefits of the technique by reporting on the results of a case study where it has been useful to (a) revealing component exclusive modules in the source code for the field distributed programming environment; and (b) investigating some aspects of an implicit-invocation model of field described elsewhere. applications of the technique to other software engineering tasks, such as change impact analysis, reuse and restructuring, are also discussed.

To gain insight into the way women and men researchers at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center perceive success, a matched group of men and women was asked to reflect upon the accomplishments in their work with which they were especially satisfied. The answers show no significant gender differences, with the exception of a particularly competitive aspect of business leadership, which was mentioned most often by men. Interactive accomplishments, e.g., being a good team player, were mentioned least often by researchers in the math and science area. The lower ranking advisory engineers mentioned more interactive accomplishments and less academic leadership, e.g., seminal publications, than the higher ranking research staff members. On two external measures of success: salary and job performance rating, on overwork, and on work satisfaction, no significant gender differences were found.

The accurate prediction of turbulent flows where the separation occurs as a result of shock wave/boundary layer interaction, is very important for the applications as well for understanding the physics of boundary layer separation. In the paper the results of computations are presented for steady-state supersonic turbulent flows in the vicinity of the plane corner configurations at M=2-5. All the calculations were carried out in a condition of real physical experiments. The Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were used as a mathematical model with turbulence incorporated using two-equation Wilcox turbulence model. The implicit scheme of splitting according to the space directions is used for the time discretization. It is realized by a scalar sweeps. The TVD-type schemes based on flux vector splitting are used to approximate the inviscid fluxes derivatives.

distributed hypermedia systems that support collaboration are an emerging platform for creation, discovery, management and delivery of information. We present an approach to low power system design space exploration for distributed hypermedia applications. Traditionally, low power design and synthesis of application specific programmable processors has been done in the context of a given number of operations required to complete a task. Our approach utilizes the modern advances in compiler technology and architectural enhancements that are well matched to the compiler technology. This work is, to the best of our knowledge, the first attempt to address the need for synthesis of low power hypermedia processors. Also, this is the first work to address the power efficiency through exploiting instruction level parallelism (ILP) found in hypermedia tasks by a production quality ILP compiler. Using the developed framework we conduct an extensive exploration of low power system design space for a hypermedia application under area and throughput constraints. The framework introduced in this paper is very valuable in making early low power design decisions such as architectural configuration trade-offs including the cache and issue width trade-off under area and throughput constraint, and the number of branch units and issue width.

Embedded high perfonnance computing is being called upon to provide critical computing resources with increasing frequency. The ability to tolerate faults during operation, both maintaining operational capability and ensuring that correct results continue to be produced, is an important ingredient in mission-critical systems. An architecture for such a system is proposed, providing the ability to withstand faults with graceful degradation in performance and complete transparency to the applications programmer. The final system will be able to offer fault-tolerant computing transparently to MPI applications and draws heavily on existing, demonstrated successes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.
