High throughput and dynamic reconfigurability are required in many tasks, especially real-time applications. A logical structure of parallel computing system for such applications is a pipeline of multiprocessor modules in form of a linear array (PMMLA). This paper proposes a scheme to dynamically reconfigure the system by varying the number of processors in each stage of the PMMLA to maintain load balancing among stages. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

Traditionally, tracking systems require dedicated hardware to handle the computational demands and input/output rates imposed by real-time video sources. An alternative presented in this paper uses configurable computing machines, which use interconnected FPGAs to provide fine-grain parallelism and reconfigurability so that high-speed performance is possible for many different applications. The efficacy of such architectures to image-based computing is illustrated here through the implementation of a tracking system that consists of two parts: a Gaussian pyramid generator and a correlation-based tracker. The pyramid generator converts each input image to a hierarchy of images, each representing the original image at a different resolution. An object is tracked on successive frames by a coarse-to-fine search through this image hierarchy, using the sum of absolute differences as the matching criterion. Splash 2 performs these operations at rates of 15 or 30 frames per second. Its performance therefore rivals that of application-specific systems, although the architecture is inherently general-purpose in nature. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

Recent developments in high speed networks on both sides of the Pacific including the vBNS, and the Abilene project in the US, and the Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) in the AP region, have been driven by the emergence of high speed networking as a central requirement for the support of basic science, engineering and other disciplines. The growth of international scientific collaborations in, for example, astronomy, high energy physics, medicine, and computational science leads to a requirement for a global data communications infrastructure on par with what is available domestically. This paper describes the establishment of a high bandwidth international Internet connection from the vBNS and other US networks to the Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) and some of the applications driving this development.

The nano-threads programming model was proposed to effectively integrate multiprogramming on shared-memory multiprocessors, with the exploitation of fine-grain parallelism from standard applications. A prerequisite for the applicability of the nano-threads programming model is the ability of the runtime environment to manage parallelism at any level of granularity with minimal overheads. In this paper, we introduce runtime techniques for efficient memory management and user-level scheduling in an experimental runtime system designed to support the nano-threads programming model. We evaluate the exploitation of processor affinity for the management of nano-thread contexts, and the use of hierarchical queues to implement user-level scheduling strategies for applications with inherent multilevel parallelism. The proposed mechanisms attempt to obtain maximum benefits from data locality on cache-coherent NUMA multip'rocessors. Through the use of synthetic benchmarks, we find that our mechanism for memory management in the runtime system reduces overheads by 52% on average, compared to other known mechanisms. The use of hierarchical queues gives significant performance improvements between 17% and 40%, compared to scheduling strategies that use local queues. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

The paper describes the design and implementation of Real-Time Inter-ORB Protocol suited for multimedia applications on the CORBA environment. Conventional CORBA is not well suited for real time applications, since it does not define policies nor mechanisms to provide QoS guarantees, and does not define key features that are necessary to support real time programming. The existing TAO's RIOP for Real-Time CORBA has a mechanism to transfer QoS information but has a lack of support for QoS enforcement to achieve those QoS requests. In order to solve this problem, the paper suggests an integration of GIOP/IIOP with RSVP for Real-Time CORBA. A key feature is presented: QoS enforcement, which is provided for Real-Time CORBA by integrating IIOP with RSVP.

Demonstrates the power of providing a common set of operating system services to wide-area applications, including mechanisms for naming, persistent storage, remote process execution, resource management, authentication and security. On a single machine, application developers can rely on the local operating system to provide these abstractions. In the wide area, however, application developers are forced to build these abstractions themselves or to do without. This ad-hoc approach often results in individual programmers implementing non-optimal solutions, wasting both programmer effort and system resources. To address these problems, we are building a system, WebOS, that provides the basic operating systems services needed to build applications that are geographically distributed, highly available, incrementally scalable and dynamically reconfigurable. Experience with a number of applications developed under WebOS indicates that it simplifies system development and improves resource utilization. In particular, we use WebOS to implement Rent-A-Server to provide dynamic replication of overloaded Web services across the wide area in response to client demands.

A metacomputing environment is presented, suitable for the efficient execution of computationally intensive parallel jobs that may require/generate large volume of data. A cluster of networked computing nodes as a physical layer to the distributed architecture is considered. A job model for the submitted tasks is presented that derives from real-life application areas. The proposed distribution of work over the nodes of the execution network is proven optimal, in terms of minimizing the execution time, with respect to the availability of resources. We conclude by presenting our experience of resting the environment for computing-intensive 3D rendering jobs derived from the ESPRIT project EROPPA.

In this paper we present an adaptive version of our previously proposed quality equalizing (QE) load balancing strategy that attempts to maximize the performance of parallel branch-and-bound (B&B) by adapting to application and target computing system characteristics. Adaptive QE (AQE) incorporates the following salient adaptive features: (1) Anticipatory quantitative and qualitative load balancing mechanisms. (2) Regulation of load information exchange overhead. (3) Deterministic load balancing in extended neighborhoods instead of just immediate neighborhoods as in non-adaptive QE. (4) Randomized global load balancing to fetch work from outside the extended neighborhood. AQE fields speedup improvements of up to 80%, and 15% on the average, compared to that provided by QE for several real-world mixed-integer programming (MIP) problems, and near-ideal speedups for two of the largest problems in the MIPLIB benchmark suite on an IBM SP2 system.

Accurate performance predictions are difficult to achieve for parallel applications executing on production distributed systems. Conventional point-valued performance parameters and prediction models are often inaccurate since they can only represent one point in a range of possible behaviors. The authors address this problem by allowing characteristic application and system data to be represented by a set of possible values and their probabilities, which they call stochastic values. They give a practical methodology for using stochastic values as parameters to adaptable performance prediction models. They demonstrate their usefulness for a distributed SOR application, showing stochastic values to be more effective than single (point) values in predicting the range of application behavior that can occur during execution in production environments.

The Object Management Group's (OMG) Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is an important and popular technology that supports the development of object based, distributed applications. The benefits promised by CORBA (abstraction, heterogeneity, etc.) are appealing in many application domains, including those that satisfy real time requirements-such as manufacturing. Unfortunately, CORBA was not specified in light of real time requirements, and so the question remains whether existing object request brokers (ORBs) can be used in real time settings, or whether developers of real time systems must await future extensions of CORBA that address real time issues or use non CORBA compliant ORBs. We describe the application of an off the shelf ORB in a real time manufacturing system developed at National institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and tools which have been developed at the SEI for the analysis of CORBA's impact on the behavior of the system. Based on our experiences, we believe that today's ORBs can be used in real time settings, with certain caveats as outlined in the article. We also outline the concept of "composite objects", an approach for extending the range of non real time ORBs into a greater variety of real time settings.
