This volume, like the symposium CSP25 which gave rise to it, commemorates the semi-jubilee of Communicating Sequential Processes. 1 Tony Hoare’s paper “Communicating Sequential Processes” is today widely regarded as one of the most in?uential papers in computer science. To comm- orate it, an event was organized under the auspices of BCS-FACS (the British Computer Society’s Formal Aspects of computing science specialist group). CSP25 was one of a series of such events organized to highlight the use of formal methods, emphasize their relevance to modern computing and promote their wider application. BCS-FACS is proud that Tony Hoare presented his original ideas on CSP at one of its ?rst meetings, in 1978. The two-day event, 7–8 July 2004, was hosted by London South Bank U- versity’s Institute for computing Research, Faculty of business, computing and Information Management. The intention was to celebrate, re?ect upon and look beyondthe?rstquarter-centuryofCSP’scontributionstocomputerscience. The meeting examined the impact of CSP on many areas stretching from semantics (mathematical models for understanding concurrency and communications) and logic(forreasoningaboutbehavior),throughthedesignofparallelprogramming languages (i/o, parallelism, synchronization and threads) to applications va- ing from distributed software and parallel computing to information security, Web services and concurrent hardware circuits. It included a panel discussion with panelists Brookes, Hoare, de Roever and Roscoe (chaired by Je? Sanders), poster presentations by PhD students and others, featured a ?re alarm (requ- ing evacuation in the rain!) and concluded with the presentation of a fountain pen to Prof. Sir C. A. R. Hoare.

As future generation information technology (FGIT) becomes specialized and fr- mented, it is easy to lose sight that many topics in FGIT have common threads and, because of this, advances in one discipline may be transmitted to others. Presentation of recent results obtained in different disciplines encourages this interchange for the advancement of FGIT as a whole. Of particular interest are hybrid solutions that c- bine ideas taken from multiple disciplines in order to achieve something more signi- cant than the sum of the individual parts. Through such hybrid philosophy, a new principle can be discovered, which has the propensity to propagate throughout mul- faceted disciplines. FGIT 2009 was the first mega-conference that attempted to follow the above idea of hybridization in FGIT in a form of multiple events related to particular disciplines of IT, conducted by separate scientific committees, but coordinated in order to expose the most important contributions. It included the following international conferences: Advanced Software engineering and Its applications (ASEA), Bio-science and Bio-Technology (BSBT), Control and Automation (CA), Database Theory and Application (DTA), D- aster Recovery and business Continuity (DRBC; published independently), Future G- eration Communication and Networking (FGCN) that was combined with Advanced Communication and Networking (ACN), Grid and distributed computing (GDC), M- timedia, Computer Graphics and Broadcasting (MulGraB), Security Technology (SecTech), Signal Processing, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition (SIP), and- and e-Service, science and Technology (UNESST).

In total, 1,630 papers were submitted to FGIT 2010 from 30 countries. The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process and 395 papers were accepted. Of these 395 papers, 60 were assigned to this volume. In addition, this volume contains 7 invited papers and abstracts. Of the remaining accepted papers, 269 were distributed among 8 volumes of proceedings published by Springer in the CCIS series. 66 papers were withdrawn due to technical reasons.

The aim of the international Workshop on Databases, Information Systems and P2P computing was to explore the promise of P2P to o?er exciting new p- sibilities in distributed information processing and database technologies. The realization of this promise lies fundamentally in the availability of enhanced services such as structured ways for classifying and registering shared infor- tion, veri?cation and certi?cation of information, content distributed schemes and quality of content, security features, information discovery and accessib- ity, interoperation and composition of active information services, and ?nally market-based mechanisms to allow cooperative and noncooperative information exchanges. The P2P paradigm lends itself to constructing large-scale, complex, adaptive, autonomous and heterogeneous database and information systems, endowed with clearly speci?ed and di?erential capabilities to negotiate, bargain, coordinate and self-organize the information exchanges in large-scale networks. This vision will have a radical impact on the structure of complex organizations (business, sci- ti?c or otherwise) and on the emergence and the formation of social communities, and on how the information is organized and processed. The P2P information paradigm naturally encompasses static and wireless connectivity and static and mobile architectures. Wireless connectivity combined with the increasingly small and powerful mobile devices and sensors poses new challenges as well as opp- tunities to the database community. Information becomes ubiquitous, highly distributed and accessible anywhere and at any time over highly dynamic, - stable networks with very severe constraints on the information management and processing capabilities.

The research of holonic and agent-based systems is developing very rapidly. The community around this R&D topic is also growing fast - despite the fact that the real-life practical implementations of such systems are still surprisingly rare. H- ever, the managers in different branches of industry feel that the holonic and agent-based systems represent the only way of managing and controlling very c- plex, highly distributed systems exploring vast volumes of accumulated knowledge. The relevant research and development activities gain more and more visible support from both industry as well as public sectors. Quite naturally, the number of scientific events aimed at the subject field is also growing rapidly. We see new lines of conf- ences like INDIN, we observe a strong focus of the already well-established conferences, e. g. , INCOM or ETFA, being shifted toward holonic and agent-based manufacturing systems. We see an increased interest of the IEEE System, Man and Cybernetics Society, especially its Technical Committee on distributed Intelligent Systems which leverages the experience gathered by the members of the former Ho- nic Manufacuting Systems (HMS) consortium. We see a clear orientation of the IEEE SMC Transactions, part C, toward applications of agent-oriented solutions. The same is true of the international Journal on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (JAAMAS). This is a really good sign of the increasing importance of the field.
