The ability to monitor and analyze the performance of such applications and infrastructure is imperative for the future of improvement, design, and maintenance. In the current era, the writing and maintenance of these applications have ceased to be the job solely of computer scientists and has grown to encompass a wide variety of experts in mathematics, science, and other engineering disciplines. The fact that many developers from these disciplines have not received a formal education in computer science and rely increasingly on the tools created by computer scientists to analyze and optimize their code shows that there's a need for a forum to work together.

Recent advances in grid infrastructure and middleware development have enabled various types of applications in science and engineering to be deployed on the grid. The characteristics of these applications and the diverse infrastructure and middleware solutions developed, utilized or adapted by PRAGMA member institutes are summarized. The applications include those for climate modeling, computational chemistry, bioinformatics and computational genomics, remote control of instruments, and distributed databases. Many of the applications are deployed to the PRAGMA grid testbed in routine basis experiments. Strategies for deploying applications without modifications, and those taking advantage of new programming models on the grid are explored and valuable lessons learned are reported. Comprehensive end to end solutions from PRAGMA member institutes that provide important grid middleware components and generalized models of integrating applications and instruments on the grid are also described.

In this study, we investigate the propagation of information about visual stimuli through the brain. In our previous work, we designed a three-dimensional spiking neural network (3D-SNN) structure based on an available brain atlas for this aim. It was trained via reverse engineering, i.e., by feeding EEG recordings from a human subject during preparation for the performance of a visual task into the positions of the electrodes on the skull and letting the synapses adapt via spiketiming dependent plasticity rule. In the current work, a visual stimulus consisting of a sequence of images of dots with varying positions was processed by spatiotemporal filters mimicking retinal ganglion cells and was fed as generating currents to the neurons in the brain sensory relay - the thalamus. The study aims to observe the propagation of the visual stimulus information and stages of its conscious perception.
