Blockchain technology has gained significant interest because of a wide variety of possible uses. It was first developed as a Bitcoin cryptocurrency but has since been used in many other business and non-business applications. There are various innovations available from Bitcoin to financial innovations, risk management, IoT, and public and social services. The blockchain infrastructure, instead of most current systems based on center-based architectures, combines peer-to-peer networks and distributed platforms that use blockchain registers to store transactions. But, like the Internet in 1990, the blockchain is regarded as still growing. In the future, it can alter so many aspects of technology. However, there are many setbacks, mainly due to the defense area, as a new undeveloped sector. So, it becomes important to analyze their success in multiple use cases and scenarios as more and more diverse blockchain technologies have appeared. We address the security concerns of blockchain technology in this survey. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved immense success in computer vision and other field of science. Despite the achievements, state-of-the-art CNN models have grown to gigantic sizes that demand a lot of computing power and memory resources. As a model compression technique, parameter pruning can lower the computation and memory a CNN model needs. Previous work has proposed a parameter pruning method, which compresses the neural networks by eliminating the rows and columns of the weight matrices. Removing rows and columns preserves the dense structure of the weight matrix, rather than the sparse structure produced by unstructured pruning. Although row-and-column pruning effectively reduces the model size, making the model as compact as possible without sacrificing accuracy remains a challenge. We prove that the row-and-column pruning problem is an NP-complete problem, and we propose two approximation algorithms that provide solutions within twice the cost of the optimal solution. We also show that the approximation ratio cannot be improved for these two algorithms. Finally, we propose two schemes based on simulated annealing to solve the row-and-column pruning problem. The two proposed schemes improve accuracy by 2.7% and 1.6%, respectively, on the ResNet-18 model with 93% sparsity using the Food-101 dataset.

The rise of AI-powered computer vision algorithms offers the possibility of visual sensing of the environment in IoT applications through the widespread use of low-cost video cameras. The need for low latency, bandwidth limitations, and privacy concerns associated with video data motivates the use of edge computing for computer vision applications. However, unlike cloud computing with almost unbounded resources, the edge is characterized by compute nodes of limited capacity and power budget. Additionally, fault tolerance is limited due to replication costs at the *** this poster, we present our initial work on evaluating the performance of an edge-specific version of Kubernetes on a Raspberry Pi4 cluster for multi-camera computer vision applications. Kubernetes enables automated deployment and management of containerized distributed applications to run at scale across a cluster of compute and storage nodes, while handling node failures. However, existing literature has not characterized the resource consumption and latency impact of Kubernetes for computer vision applications on realistic edge clusters. Our experimental results indicate that while Kubernetes can deliver fault tolerance at the edge, the choices made in the design of containers pods significantly affects the observed tail latency on a low power edge cluster.

Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Arrays (CGRAs) are a class of reconfigurable architectures that inherit the performance of Domain-specific accelerators and the reconfigurability aspects of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Historically, CGRAs have been successfully used to accelerate embedded applications and are now considered to accelerate High-Performance computing (HPC) applications in future supercomputers. However, embedded systems and supercomputers are two vastly different domains with different applications and constraints, and it is today not fully understood what CGRA design decisions adequately cater to the HPC market. One such unknown design decision is regarding the interconnect that facilitates intra-CGRA communication. Our findings show that even the typical king-style mesh-like topology is often under-utilized with a typical HPC workload, leading to inefficiency. This research aims to explore the provisioning of intra-CGRA interconnect for HPC-oriented workloads and, ultimately, recoup the potential performance and efficiency lost by reducing the interconnect complexity. We proposed several reduced interconnect topologies based on the usage statistic. Then we evaluate the tradeoffs regarding hardware cost, routability of DFGs, and computational throughput.

Owing to the widespread expansion of internet users, email has emerged as a vital means of exchanging information worldwide, both personally and professionally, as it is a suitable and affordable means of doing so. It is probably mistreated or abused, though. One instance of this is the spam email, also known as non-legitimate email, which is distributed randomly to a large number of recipients and contains irrelevant content. Thus, Computer security has long been concerned about spam emails. They pose a serious risk to the computer network and computer users alike. The necessity for automatic email management systems, such as email filters that can distinguish between valid and spam emails, phishing email classifiers, and folder grouping, has expanded along with the exponential growth in the usage of email in business communication. We devised a resolution for this problem: an online application that uses the Naive Bayes classification method to separate incoming messages into spam and ham categories.

The rise of video streaming for digital visual processing has been a boon for the industry of visual processing. Video streaming technology has made it easier for companies to capture, analyze, and interpret visual data faster than ever before. Video streaming technology can be used in a wide variety of applications, including facial recognition, 3D mapping, and object recognition. Device-to-device (D2D)-enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising communication network in which computation tasks on mobile devices (MDs) can not only be processed locally but also can be scheduled to the MEC server or nearby MDs via D2D links in order to improve computational and energy efficiency. Due to the explosive growth of information and consequent large-scale data, the conflict between reducing task response time and the limited resources of MEC server and MDs has become an essential bottleneck. In this paper, we consider a D2D-enabled MEC system and study a task scheduling problem for minimizing the flowtime of all computation tasks under the energy constraints of MDs. To solve this problem, we develop a family of metaheuristic algorithms based upon our proposed framework of improved bat algorithm (IBA), which incorporates multiple best bat individuals. Also, we introduce a new linear updating scheme to update the bat positions and facilitate the evolution process of the metaheuristics. More importantly, we provide a rigorous theoretical analysis to prove the convergence of IBA by using this new updating scheme. Furthermore, we employ an improved initial solution generation strategy for enhancing the effectiveness of IBA. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can achieve high-quality scheduling solutions, in terms of shorter flowtimes, more effectively and more efficiently over baseline algorithms.

A growing number of applications are moving to serverless architectures for high elasticity and fine-grained billing. For stateful applications, however, the use of serverless architectures is likely to lead to significant performance degradation, as frequent data sharing between different execution stages involves time-consuming remote storage access. Current platforms leverage memory cache to speed up remote access. However, conventional caching strategies show limited performance improvement. We experimentally find that the reason is that current strategies overlook the stage-dependent access patterns of stateful serverless applications, i.e., data that are read multiple times across stages (denoted as multi-read data) are wrongly evicted by data that are read only once (denoted as read-once data), causing a high cache miss ***, we propose a new caching strategy, Duo, whose design principle is to cache multi-read data as long as possible. Specifically, Duo contains a large cache list and a small cache list, which act as Leader list and Wingman list, respectively. Leader list ignores the data that is read for the first time to prevent itself from being polluted by massive read-once data at each stage. Wingman list inspects the data that are ignored or evicted by Leader list, and pre-fetches the data that will probably be read again based on the observation that multi-read data usually appear periodically in groups. Compared to the state-of-the-art works, Duo improves hit ratio by 1.1×-2.1× and reduces the data sharing overhead by 25%-62%.

With the arrival of the edge computing a new challenge arises for cloud applications: How to benefit from geo-distribution (locality) while dealing with inherent constraints of wide-area network links? The admitted approach consists in modifying cloud applications by entangling geo-distribution aspects in the business logic using distributed data stores. However, this makes the code intricate and contradicts the software engineering principle of externalizing concerns. We propose a different approach that relies on the modularity property of microservices applications: (i) one instance of an application is deployed at each edge location, making the system more robust to network partitions (local requests can still be satisfied), and (ii) collaboration between instances can be programmed outside of the application in a generic manner thanks to a service mesh. We validate the relevance of our proposal on a real use-case: geo-distributing OpenStack, a modular application composed of 13 million of lines of code and more than 150 services.
