AI technologies such as deep learning provide promising advances in many areas. Using these technologies, enterprises and organizations implement new business models and capabilities. In the beginning, AI -technologies have been deployed in an experimental environment. AI-based applications have been created in an ad-hoc manner and without methodological guidance or engineering approach. Due to the increasing importance of AI-technologies, however, a more structured approach is necessary that enable the methodological engineering of AI-based applications. Therefore, we develop in this paper first steps towards methodological engineering of AIbased applications. First, we identify some important differences between the technological foundations of AItechnologies, in particular deep learning, and traditional information technologies. Then we create a framework that enables to engineer AI-applications using four steps: identification of an AI-application type, sub -type identification, lifecycle phase, and definition of details. The introduced framework considers that AI-applications use an inductive approach to infer knowledge from huge collections and streams of data. It not only enables the rapid development of AIapplication but also the efficient sharing of knowledge on AIapplications.

I/O-intensive applications are important workloads of public clouds. Multiple cloud applications co-run on the same physical machine in different virtual machines (VMs), and the shared resources (e.g., disk bandwidth) are often isolated for fairness. Our investigation shows that the performance of an I/O-intensive application is impacted by both disk bandwidth allocation and the page cache settings in the guest operating system. However, none of prior work considers adjusting the page cache settings for better performance, when the disk bandwidth allocation is adjusted. We therefore propose CSC, a system that collaboratively identifies the appropriate disk bandwidth allocation and page cache settings in the guest operating system of each VM. CSC aims to improve the system-wide I/O throughput of the physical machine, while also improve the I/O throughput of each individual I/O-intensive application in VMs. CSC comprises an online disk bandwidth allocator and an adaptive dirty page setting optimizer. The bandwidth allocator monitors the disk bandwidth utilization and re-allocates some bandwidth from free VMs to busy VMs periodically. After the re-allocation, the opti-mizer identifies the appropriate dirty page settings in the guest operating system of the VMs using Bayesian Optimization. The experimental results show that CSC improves the performance of I/O-intensive applications by 9.5 % on average (up to 17.29 %) when 5 VMs are co-located while fairness is guaranteed.

Deep integration of variable renewable energy sources in electrical power systems requires widespread use of digital technologies and novel citizen-oriented business models. The emergence of distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) has spurred the development of pilot projects and the assessment of the opportunities for the application of DLTs in the energy sector. In this paper, we examine DLTs considering their key features and applications in the energy sector, with a focus on their potential use in energy communities. As a case study, we present the pilot site in the city of Križevci in Croatia, where an energy community is being established. Based on this case, we assess the potential use cases, advantages, and possible drawbacks in the application of DLTs in comparison with the business-as-usual non-DLT solutions.

Collaborative secure image matching is a problem that is applicable in various domains, for both – data in rest and data in motion. The problem is defined as follows. There is a secret image, and a set of n mobile agents. The set of mobile agents should match (compare) an observed image to the original secret image. In this paper we discuss some of the existing approaches, and present an alternative solution applied and analyzed for different applications. The first application is a swarm of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) that search for a target specified by an image. The second application is a social network that serves as a smart storage device capable of performing distributed, secret image matching operations. Our solution is based on the well-known Visual Encryption Scheme (VES) and projections of visual bit maps rather than (quadratic complexity) messages exchange in implementing Secure Multi Party Computation (MPC) scheme. We present a perfect-information-theoretic secure solution for this problem. To keep the original image secrecy, at least k out of n mobile agents are required to retrieve any information about the original image.

Stencil computations are widely used in high performance computing (HPC) applications. Many HPC platforms utilize the high computation capability of GPUs to accelerate stencil computations. In recent years, stencils have become more diverse in terms of stencil order, memory accesses and computation patterns. To adapt diverse stencils to GPUs, a variety of optimization techniques have been proposed such as streaming and retiming. However, due to the diversity of stencil patterns and GPU architectures, no single optimization technique fits all stencils. Besides, it is challenging to choose the most cost-efficient GPU for accelerating target stencils. To address the above problems, we propose StencilMART, an automatic optimization selection framework that predicts the best optimization combination and execution time under a certain parameter setting for stencils on GPUs. Specifically, the StencilMART represents the stencil patterns as binary tensors and neighboring features through tensor assignment and feature extraction. In addition, the StencilMART implements various machine learning methods such as classification and regression that utilize stencil representation and hardware characteristics for execution time prediction. The experiment results show that the StencilMART can achieve accurate optimization selection and performance prediction for various stencils across GPUs.

Website security is a big threat for both large companies and individual developers, the more advanced the technology employed, the more challenging it is to build secure website development procedures. Hackers can easily access vulnerabilities that were not patched during development and that were thereafter distributed. This could result in significant financial losses for the business or the person. Users who visit vulnerable websites may be subject to XSS attacks that could compromise their systems, or an unsecure database configuration may result in a potential data leak, in which case the password of every user who has registered on the website is compromised. Users who use the same password on numerous websites run the danger of identity theft. This study offers the most common vulnerabilities that should be fixed in any application, giving developers the crucial place to start. The overwhelming number of vulnerabilities in each application that is being developed served as the impetus for this project. Every developer, regardless of expertise level, needs a place to start in order to fix any vulnerabilities that may have appeared in their program. The goal of this project is to create a safe online application in accordance with the recommendations of the Open Web Application Security Project (OWSAP). This demonstrates how web application vulnerabilities can be mitigated through coding changes, configuration adjustments, and patch applications. The top ten vulnerabilities according to OWASP are SQL injections, faulty authentication, sensitive data exposure, faulty access control, and XML external entities. The web application’s security has been examined and shown to have defenses in place for those vulnerabilities.

As a consequence of the Global pandemic, Supply Change Management (SCM) is becoming more complex due to market uncertainty across value chains; from sourcing materials to logistics and production. With the development of contemporary technology, blockchain may allay this worry by providing the SCM industry with automated software solutions. Blockchain is an emerging technology that supports a distributed and transparent approach to transactions between various entities. Due to increased digital usage across many sectors, the technology is being adopted more commonly in real-world business applications that aim to achieve transparency and security along a distributed chain of processes. Examining how these applications are deployed, based on the respective domain creates opportunities for future research and in advancing current thought processes of supply chain practitioners. This research aims to assess the fishing industry and provide a solution to trace the complete seafood lifecycle by capturing, recording, and tracking all relevant activities and data (e.g., video, photo, documents) from "bait to plate" and provide an open and immutable history record for each transaction in the supply chain of this lifecycle. The rapid advancement of embedded multicore and many-core systems has revolutionized computing, enabling the development of high-performance, energy-efficient solutions for a wide range of applications. As models scale up in size, data movement is increasingly the bottleneck to performance. This movement of data can exist between processor and memory, or between cores and chips. This paper investigates the impact of bottleneck size, in terms of inter-chip data traffic, on the performance of deep learning models in embedded multicore and many-core systems. We conduct a systematic analysis of the relationship between bottleneck size, computational resource utilization, and model accuracy. We apply a hardware-software co-design methodology where data bottlenecks are replaced with extremely narrow layers to reduce the amount of data traffic. In effect, time-multiplexing of signals is replaced by learnable embeddings that reduce the demands on chip IOs. Our experiments on the CIFAR100 dataset demonstrate that the classification accuracy generally decreases as the bottleneck ratio increases, with shallower models experiencing a more significant drop compared to deeper models. Hardware-side evaluation reveals that higher bottleneck ratios lead to substantial reductions in data transfer volume across the layers of the neural network. Through this research, we can determine the trade-off between data transfer volume and model performance, enabling the identification of a balanced point that achieves good performance while minimizing data transfer volume. This characteristic allows for the development of efficient models that are well-suited for resource-constrained environments.

The distributed network control in software-defined networking is greatly challenged by the design demands of evolving a running distributed control plane (DCP), and by the complexity of handling the control state dynamics. In this paper, we propose RIFFLE to address the problem using a distributed network operating system approach. RIFFLE enables the evolvability of control states of DCP deployed on a global scale. RIFFLE handles spatial and temporal dynamics that occur when updating and migrating the distributed control states, which overcomes the critical barrier to the evolvability. It fills the gap by enabling temporal reconfigurability in DCP. Moreover, RIFFLE reduces the complexities of building and maintaining network control services in DCP by enabling componentization and abstracting the underlying network dynamics. We evaluated the prototype RIFFLE through experiments running in PlanetLab. The results show that the prototype scales well for 135 nodes. We also validate that RIFFLE ensures the continuity and low content request delay for the supported the information-centric network supported during cache update periods owing to the enabled evolvability.
