The continuous spreading of the Internet-of-Things across application domains, aided by the continuous growth on the number of devices and systems that are Internet-connected, created both a rise in the complexity of these systems and made noticeable a lack of human resources with the expertise to design, develop and maintain them. Recent works try to mitigate these issues by creating solutions that abstract the complexity of the systems, such as using visual programming languages. Node-RED, as one of the most common solutions for the visual development IoT systems, stills has several limitations, such as the lack of observability and inadequate debugging mechanisms. In this work, we address some of these limitations by enhancing Node-RED with new features that improve the user's system development, debugging, and understanding tasks. We proceed to empirically evaluate the impact of these enhancements, concluding that, overall, such enhancements reduce the development time and the number of failed attempts to deploy the system.

distributed applications are composed of various types of objects which are encapsulations of data and methods to manipulate the data in the objects. In order to provide reliable and available application services, each object is replicated on multiple virtual machines in a system. On the other hand, a system consumes a large amount of electric energy since multiple replicas of each object are manipulated on multiple virtual machines in a system. In this paper, the IEEQS-VM (improved energy-efficient quorum selection with virtual machines) algorithm is proposed to reduce the total electric energy consumption of a system by omitting meaningless write methods. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper considers a digital twin network (DTN) assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) system. When wireless device (WD) users request services from MECs, we assume in the system there are a cloud server, storing all of service entities, and a lightweight digital twin network, providing the digital replicas of state information of all MECs instead of service entities. We aim to maximize the number of service requests served by the MECs, or, equivalently, to minimize the load of the cloud. This is formulated as a mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem. We propose a service placement algorithm based on hash-based data structure called Merkle tree to solve the problem. The introduction of candidate mode pruning effectively reduces the time complexity of the algorithm in iterations. Simulation results show that our proposed method has a better performance compared with the other benchmarks.

This paper discusses about the advantage of using asynchronous simulation in the case of interactive simulation in which user can steer and control parameters during a simulation in progress. Asynchronous models allow to compute each iteration faster to address the issues of performance needed in an highly interactive context, and our hypothesis is that get partial results faster is better than getting synchronized and final results to take a decision, in a interactive simulation context.

Optimal deployment of multi-component big data applications is difficult in geo-distributed intercloud environments. This is because of the numerous infrastructure components and options available and the variety of constraints that must be satisfied, such as application, cloud infrastructure, data processing, and privacy-related constraints. The task becomes even more complicated when multiple scientific workflows must be executed with a severely limited resource-acquisition budget. This paper proposes a many-objective constrained optimization framework that addresses these issues. The proposed framework first conducts constraint satisfaction via equivalent transformation, then many-objective optimization using nondominated sorting, reference points, and elitism. In the case of multiple workflows, both optimization for each workflow and optimization for the ensemble of workflows are considered. Furthermore, a proposed bias index is presented that indicates on an objective-by-objective basis the effect of the configuration generated for each ensemble of workflows on the optimal configuration of each constituent workflow. It also provides a means of ascertaining on a granular level the relative fairness of each objective in each composite resource configuration, and can be used as a tool for prioritizing certain aspects of a workflow when deciding on the optimal configuration to utilize. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed framework through two genome analysis workflows, for which site availability and resource reliability need to be maximized, deployment cost and makespan need to be minimized, and several constraints must be satisfied.

Energy efficiency has become one of the major concerns in high-performance computing systems towards exascale. On mainstream systems, dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) and uncore frequency scaling (UFS) are two popular techniques to trade-off performance and power consumption to achieve better energy efficiency. However, the existing system software is oblivious to application characteristics and thus misses the opportunity for fine-grained power management. Meanwhile, manually instrumenting applications with power management codes are prohibitive due to heavy engineering efforts and thus hardly portable across platforms. In this paper, we propose Powerspector, a fine-grained code profiling and optimization tool with calling context awareness to automatically explore the opportunity for optimizing energy efficiency. The design of Powerspector consists of three phases, including significant region detection, performance profiling and power modeling, and frequency optimization. The first phase automatically identifies the profitable regions for frequency optimization. Then, the second phase guides the core/uncore frequency optimization with power models. The third phase injects frequency optimization codes targeting each significant code region across different calling contexts automatically. The experiment results demonstrate that Powerspector can achieve 1.13×(1.00×), 1.28×(1.09×), and 1.17×(1.06×) improvement on energy efficiency compared to static(region-based) tuning on Haswell, Broadwell, and Skylake platforms, respectively.

Intelligent information processing is topical in modern technology design and development. The fundamental idea was developed by Turing as he made the first conceptual models of information-processing computers. Though it has practically never been noticed, Turing’s work was a model of how to mimic human intelligent information processes and generate technologies, which can carry out intelligent tasks. The design method can be called cognitive mimetics as it imitates human information processes to design technologies and their applications. One can use cognitive mimetics even in solving techno-ethical problems. This is why we think that cognitive mimetics are vital as a method to generate intelligent information processes. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Under the guidance of national policies, the number of electric vehicles has shown a sudden growth. Therefore, to achieve friendly interaction between electric vehicles and the power grid at the information technology level, this paper introduces an impact factor in the Gray Model (GM (1,1)) to obtain the change of electric vehicle ownership under the guidance of policy. Through experimental comparison, it is found that the optimized model has improved its accuracy compared with the previous model. The charging characteristics of electric taxis, electric buses, and electric private cars are analyzed, then the Monte Carlo method is applied to quantize the charging load requirements of electric vehicles at different penetration rates. In addition, the results show that under high permeability, the load pressure on the grid wm increase by six percent on the peak.

A small deep hole drilling control system based on the capuchin search algorithm to optimize fuzzy PID is proposed to improve the efficiency of small deep hole drilling. Based on the difference between the actual axial force and the expected axial force, the system adaptively adjusts the quantization factor and scale factor of the fuzzy PID controller by using the capuchin search algorithm and adjusting the parameters of the controller in real-time to improve the system performance. The experimental results show that the CapSA-optimized fuzzy PID algorithm achieves the shortest stabilization time and slight overshoot. When the algorithm is applied to actual machining, the proposed algorithm has a faster response speed and more stable axial force. It can be adaptive to Change the PID drilling parameters to meet the production requirements of intelligent manufacturing..
