To help users of remote sensing data, the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences distributed Active Archive Center (GES dAAC) has developed a series of desktop and on-line tools. These are presented in this article. Various HdF readers for AIRS and MOdIS data have been written in IdL, C and Fortran. HdFLook for AIRS and MOdIS works as a desktop application as well as an integral part of various subsetting systems. AIRS QuickLook is an on-line package that allows users to view AIRS/HSB/AMSU Level-1B data online by specifying a channel prior to obtaining data. AIRS Online Channel/Variable subsetter provides on-line subsetting of the AIRS Level 1B and Level 2 data products. OASIS (Online data AnalySIS) is an IdL-based HTML/CGI interface for search, selection, and simple analysis of earth science data. TRMM Online visualization and Analysis System is designed for quick exploration, analyses, and visualization of TRMM Level-3 and other precipitation products. WebGIS is online web software that implements the Open GIS Consortium (OGC) standards for requesting rendered maps from OGC-compliant servers.

The 10kW-class Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser (COIL) device of dLR 1 was used for demonstration of efficient power coupling into a commercial fiber optic system (HIGHYAG, Berlin) modified for 1.315 μm radiation. transmission investigations were performed with different intra-cavity apertures of the stable COIL resonator to match the out-coupled laser beam to the fiber optic system. The transmitted power through the 20 m long fiber with core diameter of 1000 μm exceeded 6 kW during a typical 8 s test run of the laser. The highest transmitted power amounts to 11 kW, the highest value reported in literature. The transmission ratio was above 90%. Samples of metal and non-metal materials were cut by using nitrogen as processing gas. The materials were selected with regard to their application in the contaminated area of nuclear power plants. The results of the cutting experiments were used in theoretical models2,3 for extrapolation of the cutting data. Scaling studies were performed to estimate achievable cutting depth with COIL systems of higher laser power.

In the framework of new services in wireless networks beyond the third generation, asymmetric and flexible uplink transmission schemes are highly desirable. Hence, especially in "data only" networks, an efficient uplink scheduling must not be neglected in the network design. Although not yet well covered in the literature, this area appears to gain importance especially in the face of high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) radio link design for future wireless systems. In this work we study an uplink scheduling scheme from the information theoretic and queueing theoretic point of view. The objective of the cross-layer [2] scheduling approach we present is the stability of bit-queues awaiting their transmission at every user node. With this approach is associated an optimization problem of maximizing the weighted sum of rates, where the weights express the intensity of packet-traffics at every user node. An important property characterizing our approach is considering only spatial channelization of users, i.e. allocating user signals within one succesive interference cancellation (SIC) order fixed over a certain time interval T. We show, that despite this neglection of time sharing technique, it is possible to achieve an overall optimal stability achieving scheduling for every set of user rate weights. Furthermore, we show that the choice of the SIC-order allowing for the optimal scheduling is independent of user channels and that the associated optimization problem over transmit covariance matrices is convex.

Adaptive fusion of new information in a 3d urban scene is an important goal to achieve in computer vision, graphics, and visualization. We acquire new image pairs of a scene from closer distances and extract 3d models of successively higher resolutions. We present a new hierarchical approach to register these texture-mapped 3d models with a coarse 3d texture mapped model of an urban scene. First, we use the standard reconstruction algorithm to construct 3d models after establishing 1-1 correspondence between the feature points of two images at same resolution. Next, a subset of these feature points is used to register the higher resolution image with the lower resolution image using a scale-sensitive algorithm. Finally we register and consistently merge the 3d models at different resolutions. We present the results of our hierarchical algorithm for adaptive enhancement of a mural inside the UCSC Campus by registering data that differ in scale by a ratio of 1:15. Results indicate that the proposed hierarchical registration technique effectively utilizes the intermediate models to enable the smooth registration of the high resolution models on the coarser models.

The Cramer-Rao error bound provides a fundamental limit on the expected performance of a statistical estimator. The error bound depends on the general properties of the system, but not on the specific properties of the estimator or the solution. The Cramer-Rao error bound has been applied to scalar- and vector-valued estimators and recently to parametric shape estimators. However, nonparametric, low-level surface representations are an important tool in 3d reconstruction, and are particularly useful for representing complex scenes with arbitrary shapes and topologies. We present a generalization of the Cramer-Rao error bound to nonparametric shape estimators. Specifically, we derive the error bound for the full 3d reconstruction of scenes from multiple range images.

during the last decade, spatio-temporal database have become increasingly important in many application areas such as GIS, engineering information systems, CAd/CAM, remote sensing and environmental modeling. An important research issue in the field of GIS is the spatio-temporal analysis of huge geographical features with time such as buildings, roads, and so on. We propose a unified visualization framework for spatial and temporal analysis in 4d GIS. We also introduce a novel interoperable geographical data service concept; so-called, Virtual World Mapping (VWM) that can map 3d graphic world with real-world video. Our proposed method can easily retrieve geographical information in various views such as 2d, 3d views and videos. Our proposed system architecture also has an advantage that can provide video geographical information service without any processing such as frame segment trees construction and image segmentation.

Precise digital 3d models of indoor environments are needed in several applications, e.g., facility management, architecture, rescue and inspection robotics. We present a new algorithm that transforms a 3d volumetric model into a very precise compact 3d map and generates semantic descriptions. Our system is composed of a robust, autonomous mobile robot for the automatic data acquisition and a precise, cost effective, high quality 3d laser scanner to gage indoor environments. The reconstruction method consists of reliable scan matching and feature detection algorithms. The 3d scene is matched against a coarse semantic description of general indoor environments and the generated knowledge is used to refine the 3d model.

An autostereoscopic 3d viewing system that operates on the principles of integral photography (IP) provides a unique sense of depth, full parallax and multi-view functionality. The inherent redundancy of these images results into great amounts of data that should be efficiently coded for transmission or storage operations. In this communication, a method for efficient coding of such images is presented targeting 3d imaging and video applications. The method is based on common techniques broadly used in image compression and properly adjusted in order to take advantage of the spatial redundancies of IP images. The generality and flexibility of the proposed approach along with the stability for a wide range of bit rates constitutes the basic characteristics of the technique. The proposed technique can be easily realized in software or hardware for computer based or standalone applications.

Several signal processing techniques are presented and evaluated to filter/enhance SAR digital elevation models (dEMs). The results are compared to a topographic digital terrain model (dTM) in the context of 3d visualization and real-time rendering. Through the dLR X-SRTM dEM, the interest of InSAR data for such applications is illustrated.

We present a case study of scanning 3d objects for the purposes of education and public information. We begin by describing the original design of a 3d scanning system now in use in Cairo's Egyptian Museum. The system captures both the geometry and surface color and detail of museum artifacts. We report on the experience using the system in the museum setting, and how practical problems with the system were addressed. We present samples of how the processed 3d data will be used on a Web site designed to communicate Egyptian culture.
