Silicon oxide-nitride-oxide multilayers (ONO stacks) attract considerable interest for the charge storage structures in non-volatile memory devices [1 -2]. Ultra-thin ONO stacks are commonly prepared by thermal growth of a SiO2 layer (bottom oxide) on silicon, followed by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVd) of Si3N4. Subsequently, the top oxide is either grown by the nitride re-oxidation or deposited by LPCVd. The typical thickness of individual layers in the ONO stacks ranges from 5 nm to 15 nm. The critical structural and compositional parameters that affect electrical performance of ONO based devices include the physical density of the amorphous oxiddnitride layers and depth distributions of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen atoms. In this study, we applied (i) spatially-resolved electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a transmission electron microscope and (ii) secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) to analyze elemental distributions in the differently processed ONO stacks deposited on Si. Additionally, densities of individual layers in the ONO stacks were measured using X-ray reflectometry (XRR). EELS spectrum-imaging in a dedicated scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) revealed radiation-induced nitrogen segregation to the Si/SiO2 interfaces;the extent of nitrogen segregation increased visibly with increasing the radiation dose. The EELS metrology was optimized to obtain artifact-free data. Artifactfree measurements revealed lack of detectable nitrogen segregation to the Si/SiO2 interfaces regardless of processing conditions used. SIMS analysis demonstrated that higher thermal budget used to process the top oxide layer yields lower hydrogen content at the Si/SiO2 interface and broader nitrogen distribution across the top SiO2/Si3N4 interface. No nitrogen segregation to the Si/SiO2 interfaces was observed consistent with the EELS measurements. XRR measurements revealed a clear dependence of the density of the top oxide layer on the proces

We present a new active range scanning technique suitable for moving or deformable surfaces. It is a 'one-shot' system, in that 3d data are acquired from a single image. The projection pattern consists of equidistant black and white stripes combined with a limited number of colored, transversal stripes which aid in their identification. Instead of using a generic, static code that is supposed to work under all circumstances, a 'self-adaptive code' is used. Two modes of adaptation are provided. The first mode is off-line, and generates a robust identification code for the current projector-camera configuration. This configuration is supposed to remain fixed during the remainder of the 3d capturing session. The second mode occurs on-line. By introducing a feedback-loop from the reconstruction output to the pattern generation, the pattern can be adapted as to keep its decoding well-conditioned. Within the considered family of patterns, its parameters are optimized on the fly based on the current content of the scene. As a matter of fact, scene content of the current frame influences the pattern projected during the next. This poses a weak temporal continuity constraint. Only a very fast change of scene invalidates this assumption. The higher the throughput of the reconstruction pipeline, the less serious this constraint becomes. Our current pipeline is running at approximately 20 Hz. Our prototype only uses 'off the shelf' hardware.

High data rate transmission in an indoor environment is an important issue for the next generation of wireless communications systems. For high data rate links (155 Mbits/s) a large channel around 60 GHz has been allocated world-wide for unlicensed, dense wireless local communications. However this indoor channel is a fading channel and an improved modulation technique is required to obtain such high data rate. In this paper, we propose a comparison of two adaptive modulation techniques based on OFdM. Tests have been realized on simulated channels as well as real indoor channel.

A view-dependent three-dimensional (3-d) normal mesh transmission technique is proposed in this work. A normal mesh is first partitioned into several segments, which are compressed independently. Each segment is given a different priority according to its visibility from the client's viewing position, which is sent to the server through a feedback channel. With the visibility criterion, the compressed bitstream of each segment is optimally truncated using a Lagrangian multiplier method. Moreover, when the viewing position of the client changes, the visibility priority of each segment is updated in the server and additional mesh information is transmitted to the client accordingly. Simulation results show that the proposed technique can reduce the transmission bandwidth significantly while maintaining the same visual quality.

To help users of remote sensing data, the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences distributed Active Archive Center (GES dAAC) has developed a series of desktop and on-line tools. These are presented in this article. Various HdF readers for AIRS and MOdIS data have been written in IdL, C and Fortran. HdFLook for AIRS and MOdIS works as a desktop application as well as an integral part of various subsetting systems. AIRS QuickLook is an on-line package that allows users to view AIRS/HSB/AMSU Level-1B data online by specifying a channel prior to obtaining data. AIRS Online Channel/Variable subsetter provides on-line subsetting of the AIRS Level 1B and Level 2 data products. OASIS (Online data AnalySIS) is an IdL-based HTML/CGI interface for search, selection, and simple analysis of earth science data. TRMM Online visualization and Analysis System is designed for quick exploration, analyses, and visualization of TRMM Level-3 and other precipitation products. WebGIS is online web software that implements the Open GIS Consortium (OGC) standards for requesting rendered maps from OGC-compliant servers.

In this paper we present a flexible multiple input multiple output (MIMO) measurement system for communication signals in the 2.4 GHz band. We present some measurements of the digital to digital transmission channel which includes all impairments of the hardware realization. Using this system we perform a multi-layer transmission of communication signals. At the receiver side we use blind source separation (BSS) techniques as front-end processing to avoid estimation and synchronization problems. In order to improve the estimation of the channel and the symbol detection, we propose an iterative approach, which uses the knowledge of the finite symbol alphabet but does not need additional training data.

With the rising number of modulation types used in multiuser communication systems, we need to find efficient methods to discriminate them. Indeed, modulation recognition has become important in wireless communications for both civilian and military applications. Traditionally, to classify modulation types, most studies assume abundant a priori knowledge about modulated signals such as binary data rate, baud rate or carrier frequency. However, new transmission receiver systems need to classify automatically digital modulations without specific information. In the course of making decision on modulation type, these parameters may have to be estimated in order to perform efficient demodulation. This paper proposes a new way of estimating baud rate of digital modulated signals. This approach is based on abrupt changes detection in time-frequency plane and on abrupt change periodicity analysis using Kalman filtering.

A method is presented that uses an approximate nearest neighbor method for determining correspondences within the iterative closest point algorithm. The method is based upon the k-d tree. The standard k-d tree uses a tentative backtracking search to identify nearest neighbors. In contrast, the approximate k-d tree (Ak-d tree) applies a depth-first nontentative search to the k-d tree structure. This search improves runtime efficiency, with the tradeoff of reducing the accuracy of the determined correspondences. This approximate search is applied to early iterations of the iterative closest point algorithm, transitioning to the standard k-d tree for the final iterations after the change in the mean square error of the correspondences becomes sufficiently small. The method benefits both from the improved time performance of the approximate search in early iterations as well as the full accuracy of the complete search in later iterations. Experimental results indicate that the time efficiency of Ak-d tree is superior to the k-d tree and Elias for moderately large point sets. The change in the shape of the minimum potential well space is subtle, and the convergence properties are often identical. In those cases where the global minimum was not achieved, the difference in final mse was very small. In one trial, Ak-d tree converged faster to a better minimum with a smaller mse, which indicates that the use of approximate methods may be beneficial in the presence of outliers.

Video transmission over unreliable networks such as Internet or wireless networks suffers from various kinds of adverse conditions such as bandwidth fluctuation, burst-error contamination, packet loss, and excessive packet delay due to network congestion. By taking advantage of multiple logical channels provided by digital networks, a multiple description video coding scheme is proposed to accommodate varying network environments and to meet quality of service requirements. The embedding bit-stream is obtained by exploiting the 3-d SPIHT algorithm. The coding efficiency of the proposed codec is optimized by removing spatio-temporal redundancy from video signals and constructing a more compact hierarchical zero-tree for 3-d SPIHT algorithm. The error resilience in spatio-temporal domain is utilized to conceal the distortion due to packet lost or erroneous transmission. Through the just-noticeable distortion (JNd) profiles estimating, the spatio-temporal redundancy inherent in YCbCr components of video signal is evaluated and the threshold of significance signal can be evaluated. The simulation results show that the visual quality can be maintained in transmitting video sequences at low bit rate (200 kbps) over the channel of high data loss rate (50%).
